A June 30, 2013 report described a nitrogen trifluoride leak at Intel’s manufacturing plant in Chandler, Arizona. The HotHardware account said at least 11 people were hospitalized and 43 others were treated at the scene. Those figures and the other incident details below come from that report; no primary fire-department, Intel, regulator, or hospital record was identified to independently confirm them.

What the 2013 report says happened

The incident took place at Intel’s Chandler, Arizona, manufacturing plant, according to HotHardware’s June 30, 2013 report. Local fire department Battalion Chief Tom Dwiggins was quoted as identifying the released gas as nitrogen trifluoride.

Reported injuries and emergency response

HotHardware reported that at least 11 people were taken to hospitals after experiencing nausea, breathing difficulties and eye irritation. It said another 43 people received treatment at the plant. Because no separate hospital or official incident record was located, these numbers should be read as figures reported by that article rather than independently verified totals.

What Intel said about air monitoring and operations

The account said Intel disabled the tool linked to the leak. Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy told HotHardware: “They monitored the air inside and outside the structure and in all cases the air was clean.” The report also said nearby neighborhoods were unaffected and that the plant had resumed normal operations.

Those statements describe Intel’s position as quoted in the 2013 article. They do not provide a publicly documented measurement, sampling method, detection threshold or regulatory finding.

Why the account should be treated as a historical report

No primary incident record or independent official confirmation was identified for this article. That limits what can responsibly be concluded about the chemical identification, the casualty counts, the monitoring results and the timing of the return to normal operations. Intel’s current environmental, health and safety policy describes a general corporate commitment to protecting people and the planet, but it is a policy statement and does not corroborate this 2013 event.

What is nitrogen trifluoride?

Nitrogen trifluoride is an industrial gas used in semiconductor manufacturing. The incident report identifies it as the gas involved, but does not provide exposure measurements, a toxicology assessment or an explanation of the symptoms. It therefore cannot support a precise judgment about the severity of individual exposures or the adequacy of the response.

Readers should not treat this historical account as instructions for handling a chemical release. Industrial gas incidents require site-specific hazardous-material procedures and trained emergency responders; the report supplies no basis for recommending consumer detectors, respirators or other household equipment.
