SK hynix’s supply outlook supports a strong case for NVIDIA remaining the leading AI-accelerator company through roughly 2029, but it does not guarantee three years of unchanged market share. NVIDIA’s advantage comes from its accelerator hardware, software ecosystem and customer adoption. SK hynix strengthens that position as a major supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical component in advanced AI systems.
What the SK hynix thesis actually says
The claim is a forecast, not a binding commitment from SK hynix or NVIDIA. Reuters reported in 2024 that NVIDIA held about 80% of the AI-chip market and that SK hynix was then the sole supplier of the HBM3 memory used by NVIDIA. That figure describes a historical market position; it does not establish that NVIDIA will retain 80% share, or any specific share, for the next three years.

The strongest evidence for continued momentum is the supply chain. SK hynix forecast that the AI-focused HBM market would expand by about 30% annually through 2030. In April 2026, Ki Tae Kim, SK hynix’s head of HBM sales and marketing, said: “Client requests for (HBM) chip supplies over the next three years already far exceeds our production capacity.”
Those comments show unusually strong demand for the memory used in leading AI accelerators. They do not prove that every HBM sale goes to NVIDIA, that NVIDIA wins every AI-chip segment, or that competitors cannot gain share.

Why HBM matters to NVIDIA’s lead
HBM stacks memory chips next to an accelerator and provides very high bandwidth for moving model data. Large language models and other AI workloads repeatedly exchange parameters and intermediate results, so memory bandwidth can limit system performance even when the processor itself is powerful.
An accelerator therefore depends on more than its compute die. HBM availability, advanced packaging capacity, manufacturing yields and the ability to integrate the parts into complete systems can determine how many units a supplier can ship. When demand exceeds supply, access to HBM can become a strategic advantage.
SK hynix’s position in HBM
Counterpoint Research, as quoted by Reuters, put SK hynix at 58% of global HBM revenue in the first quarter of 2026. Samsung Electronics and Micron each held 21%. These figures make SK hynix the largest HBM supplier, while also showing that two well-funded competitors have substantial positions.

Evidence for demand through 2029
A growing HBM market
SK hynix’s estimate of approximately 30% annual HBM-market growth through 2030 implies that memory demand should continue rising beyond the three-year window in the headline. It is a company forecast, so it should be treated as management’s outlook rather than a guaranteed industry result.
Capacity already committed
Kim’s April 2026 statement that requests for the next three years exceed SK hynix’s production capacity is evidence of strong customer commitments and constrained supply. It is not a promise that SK hynix will be unable to expand capacity, nor does it identify how much of that demand comes from NVIDIA versus other accelerator customers.
Planned NVIDIA integration
In June 2026, SK hynix and NVIDIA announced a multiyear technology partnership covering next-generation memory for AI factories. A July 2026 expansion announcement said planned NVIDIA Vera Rubin systems would use SK hynix HBM4, with the first AI factory planned for 2027. These plans demonstrate strategic alignment and potential product integration, but they remain forward-looking and depend on execution, qualification and deployment schedules.
Why NVIDIA could remain dominant
A complete accelerator platform
NVIDIA sells more than a processor. Its software tools, libraries, networking, system designs and developer familiarity can make switching costly for cloud providers and enterprise users. Customers often optimize applications around a platform, not only around a chip’s peak specification.

Access to scarce components
Close coordination with an HBM leader can help NVIDIA secure memory for high-volume products. That advantage matters when accelerator demand is growing faster than packaging and memory capacity.
Large installed base
Existing NVIDIA systems create a feedback loop: developers learn the platform, cloud providers offer it, and customers choose it because compatible software and deployment expertise are available. A rival must often compete on hardware, software migration and supply at the same time.
What could reduce NVIDIA’s share
Samsung and Micron
The Q1 2026 HBM figures show that Samsung and Micron are credible alternatives. If either expands qualified production or wins more accelerator designs, NVIDIA may have more supply options, but those suppliers could also support NVIDIA’s competitors.

Custom hyperscaler accelerators
Large cloud companies increasingly design chips for their own workloads. Custom silicon can reduce dependence on a general-purpose accelerator when a provider can accept narrower software compatibility in exchange for control over cost, power or availability.

Rival accelerator vendors
Competing chip companies can attack specific workloads, especially inference, where price, energy use and deployment flexibility may matter as much as training performance. NVIDIA’s share could therefore fall even while the overall AI-chip market expands.
Supply-chain execution
HBM is only one constraint. Advanced packaging, substrate supply, manufacturing capacity, networking equipment and system integration can all limit shipments. A partnership with a leading memory supplier reduces one risk but does not remove the others.

No official SK hynix forecast identified here guarantees a specific NVIDIA market-share percentage for exactly three years. The “at least three years” wording is best read as a reported prediction based on NVIDIA’s historical lead, strong AI infrastructure demand, SK hynix’s capacity commitments and announced product alignment.

What enterprise buyers should watch
- Accelerator software: whether competing platforms can run existing training and inference workloads without expensive rewrites.
- Total cost: performance per dollar and per watt, including servers, networking, software and electricity.
- HBM and packaging availability: whether suppliers can deliver complete systems at the required volume.
- Customer lock-in: the cost of moving models, tools and staff to another platform.
- Product cadence: whether NVIDIA and rivals deliver new architectures on schedule and in volume.
Bottom line
SK hynix’s statements make continued NVIDIA strength plausible, especially while HBM demand exceeds available capacity and the two companies coordinate on future AI-factory systems. But the evidence supports a probability judgment, not a guaranteed three-year monopoly or a fixed market-share forecast. NVIDIA’s lead will depend on its software ecosystem and execution as much as on SK hynix’s memory supply, while Samsung, Micron, hyperscalers and rival accelerator vendors retain clear ways to challenge it.
