If an RTSP camera works in its own app but appears blank in Frigate or a browser, the app has proved only that it can reach and play a feed—not that Frigate’s browser playback path works. Frigate Live view uses go2rtc’s stream directly in the browser; the fastest way to isolate the fault is to test the stream in go2rtc, read its logs, then check the negotiated codecs and Frigate’s stream mapping.
Why the camera app can work while Frigate is blank
The manufacturer’s app and Frigate Live view do not necessarily use the same connection or playback route. Frigate’s Live view follows the path camera → go2rtc → browser. The app may use a different protocol, stream, or playback method, so its success does not confirm that Frigate can open the RTSP URL or that the browser can decode the resulting stream.

Frigate’s debug view is a separate test: it shows the detect stream after Frigate processes it, while Live view plays the go2rtc stream directly in the browser. As the Frigate Live View documentation explains, “The debug view plays the detect stream processed by Frigate itself, while the Live view plays your go2rtc stream directly in the browser.” A working debug view therefore does not prove that the browser can play the Live view stream.
Diagnose the failure in order
-
Read go2rtc’s logs first
In Frigate, check the go2rtc logs for the stream you are trying to open. The error usually points to which part of the camera-to-go2rtc connection needs attention:

401 Unauthorized: check the username and password, including whether reserved characters in the password are URL-encoded in the go2rtc RTSP URL. Repeated failed attempts may also have locked the camera account.Connection refusedor a timeout: verify the camera’s IP address and RTSP port, that the camera is reachable from Frigate, and that the camera has not reached its connection limit.404 Not Found: check the RTSP path and the stream name. The path may be incorrect, or the named stream may not exist.
Frigate handles credentials in its own FFmpeg inputs differently from credentials in go2rtc stream URLs; follow the applicable syntax rather than assuming one format works for both. See the Frigate go2rtc configuration guide.
-
Test the stream in go2rtc’s web interface
Open the go2rtc web interface and try its player for the affected stream. This bypasses Frigate’s Live view UI and helps separate a source or go2rtc problem from a browser-player or Frigate mapping problem.

Inspect the stream go2rtc actually negotiated
Use Frigate’s
/api/go2rtc/streamsendpoint and the per-stream endpoint to inspect the video and audio codecs go2rtc negotiated. The camera’s settings page or manufacturer app may describe a configured format, but the negotiated stream details show what is actually reaching go2rtc. Compare those codec details with browser playback requirements before changing settings.Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm Frigate is selecting the intended stream
Frigate camera names and go2rtc stream names need to line up, or the camera’s
live -> streamssetting must explicitly select the intended stream. A mismatch can leave the interface using a fallback such as jsmpeg instead of the stream you expected. Check the Live view configuration guidance and ensure the configured live stream is the one you tested in go2rtc.Rank #3

Use browser errors to narrow the remaining issue
Frigate groups Live view problems into startup, decode, and stalled playback errors. Startup errors suggest a connection or initialization problem. Decode errors point toward an unsupported codec or damaged frames. A stream that starts and then stalls may be buffering, losing network connectivity, or demanding more than the browser can handle—especially when several high-resolution views are open. Frigate’s Live view troubleshooting documentation describes these error categories.
Choose a remedy based on what the tests show
go2rtc cannot connect to the camera
Do not start by changing browser settings. Correct the RTSP endpoint, credentials, network reachability, transport, or camera connection limit indicated by the logs. The exact RTSP path and any model-specific firmware settings depend on the camera; use Frigate’s camera-specific guidance once you know the make and model.

go2rtc connects, but none of its players work
Inspect the negotiated source format and transport. An app may play the camera through a different route, so its success does not establish that the RTSP stream available to go2rtc is usable by its players. Resolve that source or transport issue before troubleshooting Frigate’s Live view UI.

Check the browser’s playback errors, whether Frigate maps the camera to the intended go2rtc stream, and whether the video codec is supported by that browser and operating system. Video works but Live view has no audio
Check the negotiated audio codec as well as the video codec. Frigate recommends AAC audio for broad browser compatibility. If video is supported but audio is not, go2rtc can copy the video without re-encoding it while converting the audio to a player-compatible format; this is generally less resource-intensive than video transcoding. See Frigate’s go2rtc FFmpeg configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Improve browser compatibility and startup
- Prefer H.264 video and AAC audio. Frigate recommends these formats for broad compatibility. H.265/HEVC browser support varies by browser, operating system, and available decoder, so a camera feed using it may work in one app but fail in a browser.
- Use a camera substream for Live view when available. An H.264 substream can provide a more compatible, lower-bandwidth browser feed while the main stream remains available for recording. Configure the intended live stream explicitly.
- Transcode only when needed. go2rtc’s FFmpeg module can convert unsupported video to H.264 or audio to a compatible format. Video transcoding can use substantial compute; if only audio is incompatible, copying video and transcoding audio reduces the work.
- Match the I-frame interval to the frame rate. Frigate recommends matching the camera’s I-frame interval to its frame rate, or using the camera’s documented equivalent. Long intervals between keyframes can delay playback startup.
- Avoid proprietary “smart” or “+” codecs for compatible playback. Use a standard stream format where the camera offers one; proprietary modes can complicate playback in other software.
- Reduce load when playback stalls. Try the lower-bandwidth substream and close other live views. Multiple high-resolution streams or a heavily loaded browser can contribute to buffering or stalled playback.
For codec, keyframe, and stream guidance, see Frigate’s camera-specific configuration documentation and go2rtc guide.
What a working debug view does—and does not—tell you
If the debug view works while Live view is blank, treat that difference as a clue: Frigate can process its detect stream, but the browser-facing go2rtc path still needs to be checked. Test the go2rtc player, verify the Live view stream mapping, and inspect browser decode or startup errors. The debug view alone cannot establish that the selected go2rtc stream is available or browser-compatible.
