RTMP vs. RTSP: What’s the Difference for Live Streaming?

RTMP commonly sends encoder feeds to a server; RTSP controls a session while RTP usually carries the media. Compare their roles, common uses, and practical compatibility checks.

RTMP and RTSP serve different jobs. RTMP is commonly used to send an encoder’s live contribution feed to a streaming server. RTSP sets up and controls a media session; video and audio are commonly carried separately using RTP. For a typical encoder-to-platform workflow, RTMP is often the fit. For bringing a supported IP-camera feed into a media server, RTSP/RTP is common. Neither label guarantees compatibility: both endpoints, codecs, network rules, and implementation must match.

What RTMP and RTSP do

RTMP: commonly used for contribution and ingest

RTMP commonly carries stream control and media over a persistent TCP connection. In a standard contribution workflow, an encoder such as OBS sends a live feed to a server or streaming service that accepts RTMP. The destination typically provides an ingest URL and stream key. RTMP is a common workflow choice, not a requirement imposed by every platform; follow the destination’s current ingest instructions. Wowza’s RTMP workflow guidance describes this use.

RTSP: session setup and control

RTSP is used to establish and control a media session; it does not typically carry the continuous audio/video itself. RFC 2326, the IETF’s RTSP 1.0 specification from April 1998, says: “It does not typically deliver the continuous media.” The media is commonly transported separately using RTP. RFC 2326 defines RTSP 1.0, while RFC 7826 defines RTSP 2.0, published in December 2016, and obsoletes the earlier specification. The RFC cautions that RTSP 2.0 is not generally backwards-compatible with RTSP 1.0 beyond basic version negotiation. Many deployed camera products and guides describe RTSP 1.0-era behavior, so a device marked “RTSP” should not be assumed to support version 2.0.

RTMP vs. RTSP/RTP at a glance

Question RTMP RTSP with RTP
Common role Contribution or ingest from an encoder to a server Session setup/control, commonly for camera or media-server sessions
How media is carried Commonly carried over RTMP’s persistent TCP connection Commonly carried separately with RTP
Common source Software or hardware encoder sending a live feed Supported IP camera or surveillance source
Transport considerations TCP; Wowza documents TCP 1935 as its default RTMP port RTSP control and RTP media have distinct roles; RTP may use UDP or TCP interleaving. Wowza documents TCP 554 as its default RTSP port
Viewer delivery A server can deliver through a viewer-oriented protocol such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC, depending on its configuration and clients

The port numbers above are Wowza configuration defaults, not universal requirements. Check the current configuration for your server and network. Wowza’s technical specifications list those defaults and supported workflows.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Which should you use?

Choose RTMP when an encoder is pushing to an ingest endpoint

If OBS or another encoder is sending a production feed and the destination supplies an RTMP ingest URL and stream key, RTMP is the straightforward match. Use the platform’s current settings, and prefer RTMPS when the platform supports it and the feed crosses an untrusted network. The exact ingest protocol and security options depend on the destination.

Choose RTSP/RTP when ingesting a supported IP camera

If a camera exposes an RTSP URL and your media server accepts RTSP/RTP, this is a common camera-ingest workflow. Before configuring it, verify the exact camera model’s RTSP version or profile, URL syntax, authentication method, codec support, and transport options in the manufacturer’s documentation. Some manufacturers use proprietary URL syntax, and an RTSP label alone does not ensure that the server can decode the camera’s stream. ONVIF’s streaming profile context can help explain device and streaming behavior, but model-specific documentation remains important.

Built-in OSD generator adds scrolling text, logos, or timestamps directly to the video stream — ideal for branding, event info, or security labeling. Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.

Choose viewer delivery separately

RTMP or RTSP/RTP at ingest does not determine what viewers use to watch. A media server can ingest one protocol and deliver via HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC according to its configuration and client requirements. Wowza documents these output options in its technical specifications. Browsers and apps should be configured for the server’s viewer-facing delivery method, not assumed to play the camera’s RTSP URL or an RTMP ingest feed directly.

Network and security checks

  • Ports and firewalls: RTMP commonly uses TCP, and Wowza lists TCP 1935 as its default. Wowza lists TCP 554 for RTSP. These defaults can be changed, and firewall or hosting rules may block them; check the actual server configuration rather than opening ports based only on a protocol name.
  • RTSP control and RTP media: RTSP control and the media transport are separate considerations. RTP may travel over UDP or be interleaved over TCP, depending on the endpoints. If a camera works on the local network but not through NAT or a firewall, check whether both ends support interleaved TCP; it may help where UDP is blocked, but it is not guaranteed to be available.
  • Encryption: RTMPS provides RTMP over TLS where supported. For RTSP workflows, assess control-channel and media protection separately: RTSPS protects RTSP control, but does not by itself encrypt RTP media. Wowza’s security guidance distinguishes RTMPS, RTSPS, and SRTP. Verify that the source and server support the protections you intend to use.
  • Authentication: Confirm how credentials are configured and protected on both the source and server. Do not expose a camera URL or stream key publicly; the supported authentication method is implementation-specific.

Common setup failures and fixes

The encoder cannot connect to an RTMP destination

  • Check that the destination explicitly accepts RTMP or RTMPS and that you copied its current ingest URL and stream key correctly.
  • Verify that outbound TCP traffic is permitted by the encoder’s network and that the destination’s configured port is reachable. TCP 1935 is a common vendor default, not a universal port.
  • If using RTMPS, confirm that both the encoder and platform support it and that the URL uses the platform’s specified secure endpoint.

The camera’s RTSP URL fails

  • Confirm the URL syntax, path, credentials, and codec in the camera manufacturer’s documentation; syntax can vary by model or manufacturer.
  • Verify that the server accepts the camera’s RTSP version/profile and codec. “RTSP support” alone does not promise the same media formats or session behavior.
  • If the camera is reachable locally but not from the server, check routing, NAT, firewall rules, and whether RTP is using UDP or supported TCP interleaving.

The stream connects but has no video or viewers cannot play it

  • Separate the ingest issue from the output issue: confirm the server accepts the incoming media, then check that it is configured to publish a viewer-compatible output such as HLS, MPEG-DASH, or WebRTC.
  • Check that the codec and transport are supported by the receiving server and client. A successful RTSP control connection does not prove that the RTP media is arriving or decodable.
