If an RSS feed will not load or update, first check the exact feed URL and the response it returns. A feed may be unavailable, serve an error page instead of XML, contain malformed XML, declare an incorrect version or extension, or have a character-encoding mismatch. If the feed validates but only one reader fails, compare that reader’s stored URL and fetch error with the feed’s actual HTTP response.
Start with the exact feed URL
Check the address intended for the feed, not just the website homepage. Request that URL and determine whether it returns feed XML, an HTTP error, an unexpected HTML page, or a redirect. These are different failure types: changing XML will not fix an unreachable endpoint, and changing a subscription setting will not turn an HTML error page into a feed.
The W3C Feed Validator error documentation includes HTTP and protocol errors as well as document errors. If a site recently moved or changed publishing platforms, check whether the old subscription URL redirects to the new feed.
Validate the document the server returns
Submit the exact feed URL to the W3C Feed Validation Service, or paste in the returned content. It checks RSS and Atom syntax and reports the type and location of problems. Its documented support includes RSS 0.90, 0.91, 0.92, 0.93, 0.94, 1.0, 2.0, and Atom.

A successful validation is useful evidence that the document meets the checked syntax rules; it does not prove that every reader can fetch it or that the publisher’s platform is configured as intended. If validation fails, use the reported location to inspect the XML, declared format, encoding, and extensions.
Fix XML structure, escaping, and version errors
RSS is XML. The RSS Advisory Board’s RSS 2.0 specification says RSS files must conform to XML 1.0. For RSS 2.0, the document has an <rss> root with a version attribute and a <channel> child.

- Look for unclosed or mismatched tags, content outside the root element, and characters that are invalid in XML.
- Escape literal ampersands and less-than signs in plain text as character references; do not leave them as markup delimiters.
- Confirm that the document structure matches the version it claims. RSS 2.0 requires
version="2.0"; RSS 0.90 and RSS 1.0 use different structures and do not use that version attribute. Do not relabel an RSS 1.0 document as RSS 2.0 without changing it to the correct format. - If the feed contains custom elements or attributes, verify that they are defined in a namespace. RSS 2.0 allows nonstandard elements and attributes when defined in a namespace; undeclared or invented unnamespaced fields can cause compatibility problems.
The validator’s documentation covers XML encoding and escaping errors as well as version errors.
Match the XML encoding and HTTP charset
Compare the encoding named in the XML declaration with the charset in the HTTP Content-Type response header. A conflict can be interpreted differently by aggregators. The W3C advises matching the header charset to the document declaration or ensuring the server makes no conflicting claim; see its guidance on encoding mismatches.

Also check that the response uses a suitable media type. W3C recommends application/rss+xml for RSS, identifies application/rdf+xml for RSS 1.0, and notes application/xml as a general XML alternative. A proxy or server returning an unrelated content type may complicate client handling.
Check WordPress feed type and old URLs
WordPress has built-in feed addresses for RDF/RSS 1.0, RSS 0.92, RSS 2.0, Atom, and comments RSS 2.0. Make sure the reader is subscribed to the intended feed: the comments RSS address contains comments, not the site’s post content. A theme may omit visible links for some feed types even when WordPress provides them. See the WordPress Feeds documentation for the feed types and address patterns.

After a migration or URL change, check redirect and rewrite rules so existing subscribers’ addresses still reach the new feed. WordPress documents examples for forwarding legacy paths to its RSS 2.0 endpoint.

If the feed validates and its URL appears correct but one reader cannot subscribe or refresh, inspect that reader’s exact error and compare it with the HTTP response for the same endpoint. Check the URL stored in the reader, redirect destination, HTTP status, and whether access controls or authentication affect the request. Client compatibility and server behavior may also matter. There is no universal cause for a feed that works in one reader but not another, so avoid applying a reader-specific workaround without the URL and error details.
