If you only need to repeat one prerecorded video on a YouTube Live channel, you may not need MediaMTX: FFmpeg can loop a file, encode it, and publish it through a compatible YouTube workflow. Keep MediaMTX when you need its media-server functions—such as protocol conversion, forwarding, or serving streams—and choose an alternative based on whether you want a command-line encoder, a visual production tool, a hosted service, or dedicated hardware.
What MediaMTX does—and when you can skip it
MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use media server and proxy/router. It can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time streams, convert between protocols, and make streams available to viewers. Those are server and routing functions, not prerequisites for simply repeating a file to YouTube. MediaMTX’s introduction explains its role.

If your whole workflow is “read this file repeatedly and send it to YouTube,” an encoder such as FFmpeg may be enough. If you depend on MediaMTX to convert protocols, forward one stream to another destination, or serve streams, replacing it with an encoder alone removes those capabilities. MediaMTX also documents forwarding streams to YouTube over RTMPS. Its forwarding guide describes that setup.

These options do different jobs; they are not all drop-in replacements for a media server. The available documentation does not establish comparative performance, reliability rankings, or current prices.

Loop a local video with FFmpeg
MediaMTX’s documented command shows the core loop flags and publishes to a MediaMTX listener:

-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its native rate rather than as fast as the machine can process it. -c copy avoids re-encoding, and -f flv selects the output container for this RTMP example. The destination, rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream, is a local MediaMTX endpoint—not YouTube. Do not paste this command unchanged and assume it will publish to YouTube. The MediaMTX guide provides the documented example.

If you retain MediaMTX, configure its listener and forwarding to YouTube as documented. If you remove it, use a YouTube-compatible encoder destination workflow; the localhost command above does not establish the required direct endpoint settings.
- Get the current YouTube ingest details. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter those details into the encoder or forwarding setup. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering the URL and key. Keep the stream key secret.
- Check the outgoing tracks. For the MediaMTX-to-YouTube forwarding setup, MediaMTX warns that YouTube requires both video and audio tracks; video-only streams are silently rejected. Include an audio track even if it is silent, and verify that the resulting stream is accepted. See the forwarding documentation.
- Run and supervise the process. FFmpeg must continue running on the computer or server that reads the file. For an unattended channel, plan how you will notice a stopped process and restart it; the documented loop command itself does not establish a hosted service or process supervisor.
Use OBS when you need visual production controls
OBS is a better fit than a bare command when you need scenes or overlays and want an interactive production interface. YouTube lists encoder software as a streaming route, while MediaMTX provides instructions for publishing OBS output to MediaMTX. This is a production/encoding workflow, not evidence that OBS alone offers a managed 24/7 prerecorded loop. If you need unattended repetition, test the full playback and recovery workflow before relying on it.

Plan for YouTube’s long-stream behavior
Archives and DVR
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Very long streams can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. If the recording matters, keep a separate local archive and do not rely on the live stream’s replay as your only copy. YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance describe these limits.
Upload bandwidth and failover
YouTube recommends outbound capacity equal to the primary stream bitrate plus any backup stream bitrate, with an additional 20% headroom. Its streaming tips also advise checking the integrity of a local archive and testing encoder failover. These steps matter particularly when your setup depends on a local computer and home connection. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization rules for your channel. A technically stable stream can still receive a copyright claim or other platform action if the content or use is not authorized.
