No. RS-485 is an electrical interface for serial communication; Ethernet is a broader networking standards family. They can both carry data for protocols such as Modbus, but they are not interchangeable, and connecting equipment that uses each usually requires compatible interfaces and, depending on the devices, a gateway or protocol conversion.
What RS-485 and Ethernet mean
RS-485, also known as TIA/EIA-485, specifies electrical behavior for transmitters and receivers communicating over a balanced, differential signal pair. It defines how signals are sent and received; it does not, on its own, define the meaning or format of an application’s messages. A higher-level protocol supplies that.

Ethernet is a family of networking standards defined by IEEE 802.3. It includes media access control (MAC) and physical-layer specifications. The physical signaling and medium depend on the particular Ethernet implementation, or PHY. Ethernet is therefore more than a cable or plug, just as RS-485 is more than a complete communications protocol. IEEE 802.3-2022 describes the standard family; the ITU-T G.8020.3 recommendation incorporates IEEE 802.3 by reference.

| Aspect | RS-485 | Ethernet |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Electrical interface for serial communication | Networking standards family, including MAC and physical-layer specifications |
| Signaling or media | Balanced, differential signaling over a signal pair | Depends on the selected Ethernet PHY and medium |
| What carries messages | A higher-level protocol, such as Modbus or Profibus | Network protocols such as IP; applications can include Modbus TCP |
| Practical interface | An RS-485 interface or transceiver with suitable serial wiring | An Ethernet interface and compatible network equipment |
The table compares scope, not performance. There is no single universal RS-485 speed or cable-distance figure, and Ethernet has many implementations with different speeds and media. Any comparison needs to name the specific equipment and implementation.

Why Modbus appears with both
Modbus is a higher-level communications protocol, not another name for RS-485 or Ethernet. The Modbus Organization says it does not specify a physical network and can operate over different lower-level choices, including EIA/TIA-485 and Ethernet using TCP/IP. Modbus RTU over an RS-485 serial link and Modbus TCP over an Ethernet/IP network are distinct ways of carrying Modbus data. The shared protocol explains why both interface names often appear in the same industrial system; it does not make RS-485 an Ethernet variant.
Can an RS-485 device connect to Ethernet?
Not simply by plugging its serial wiring into an Ethernet port or using a passive cable. The two interfaces use different electrical and communications arrangements. A connection needs equipment whose interfaces match the endpoints, and may require a gateway that translates between protocols or transports data between the serial and network sides. The exact solution depends on what each device supports and how its protocol is configured.

- Modbus is not supported. M0 series 32-bit ARM processor, fast speed, high efficiency. 10/100M Auto-MDI/MDIX ethernet interface, regardless of cross-over or straight-through cable. Configurable RS485 baudrate (600bps~230.4Kbps), supports five parity check options: None, Odd, Even, Mark, Space
- Available working modes: TCP Server, TCP Client, UDP Server, UDP Client, HTTPD Client (supports GET and POST). Configurable via webpage, AT commands, serial protocol, and network protocol, provides configuration protocol which can be integrated to your own software. Supports customized heartbeat packets, make sure the connection is truthful, as well as for actively retrieving sensor data
- Supports customized registration packets, auto passing the registered packet as identifier after the connection is established, so that different devices can be distinguished. Supports customized webpage, allows user to customize the module configuration page. Supports RFC2217-like protocol, be able to communicate with devices whose serial setting (baudrate, data bit, etc.) may change
- KeepAlive mechanism, detects broken connection, auto re-connecting. Supports time-out reboot (no-data reboot), ensures a long-term stable connection, configurable reboot time. Supports DNS domain name resolution, configurable DNS server.Supports DHCP, auto-obtained IP or static IP Firmware is upgradable via the network
- Restore to factory settings via software and/or hardware. Comes with default MAC address, which is customizable. Provided software: module configuration software, TCP/UDP testing tool, VCOM virtual serial port software. Example code: host computer (socket ), VB, C++, Delphi, Android, iOS, etc.
For example, a controller speaking Modbus RTU over RS-485 and a network application using Modbus TCP cannot be assumed to communicate just because both use Modbus. The intervening equipment must support the required interfaces and handle the protocol relationship between them.

Schneider Electric Australia’s RS-485 wiring FAQ lists reference figures of 32 transmitters, 32 receivers, a maximum cable length of 4,000 ft, and a maximum data rate of 10 Mbps. The FAQ’s publication date is not stated. These are vendor reference figures, not universal guarantees; the longest cable length and highest data rate should not be assumed to be achievable together, and actual performance depends on the equipment, cable, and installation conditions. Likewise, an Ethernet speed or distance cannot be given as a single figure without specifying the PHY and medium. Choose or assess a connection using the actual device documentation and installation requirements, rather than treating either standard’s name as a performance rating.

RS-485 defines the electrical interface, not the application meaning of messages or a complete network protocol. Analog Devices’ AN-960 application guide, identified as an April 2015 guide, describes TIA/EIA-485-A as the physical layer of the RS-485 interface and notes that it is normally used with a higher-level protocol, such as Profibus, Interbus, Modbus, or BACnet. The protocol documentation and device configuration are needed to understand what the transmitted data means.
