Some old CRT televisions did stay in use for many years, but the available evidence does not show that CRTs universally outlast modern TVs. The impression can come from comparing a surviving old set with modern TVs replaced for any reason—not only because they broke. “Lasting” might mean years before a fault, years of useful service, or time until an owner chooses a replacement; those are different measures.
Why old CRT TVs can seem more durable
A set can be replaced without failing
In Germany, more than 60% of functioning flat-screen TVs were replaced in 2012 because owners wanted newer or better devices, according to the Federal Environment Agency. A replacement count therefore does not equal a count of broken televisions. The same Agency summary says roughly two thirds of television purchases were prompted by technical defects, reporting 57.6% in 2004 and 55.6% in 2012/2013. Those figures describe different years, groupings and reasons; they should not be conflated with the working-set replacement statistic.

Survivors are easier to remember
An old television still in a family room is a visible survivor. Sets that failed, were discarded, or were replaced years ago are less likely to be part of the comparison. This survivor effect is a plausible explanation for the impression, not a measured statistic in the cited sources.

“Lasting” can mean several things
A TV might still turn on but have a dim picture, a failed component, or features that no longer meet its owner’s needs. First useful service life, time until a component fails, replacement cycle and technical repairability are related but distinct measures. A replacement-cycle estimate captures owner behavior as well as hardware condition.

What the available lifespan figures show
The strongest direct figure here for CRT service life is specific to Germany: the Federal Environment Agency reports an average first useful service life of 10–12 years for CRT TVs during 2005–2012. It is a historical average, not a universal physical limit or a promise that each set lasted that long.
A separate European Commission review uses TV replacement rate as a proxy for service life. It reports 9–11 years in the 1990s, 5–6 years in 2003–2010, and 8–9 years later. These values describe replacement behavior across periods, not laboratory failure rates. They are not a controlled comparison of CRTs with today’s televisions, so they cannot establish a precise lifespan penalty for modern sets.

- 13-inch combo TV/DVD player; measures 14.25 x 15 x 14.4 inches (W x H x D)
- Compatibility with DVD movie, CD audio,CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R, and VCD discs
- JPEG Viewer enables you to create slideshows with digital photos stored on disc
- Digital coaxial audio output connects to your multi-channel audio/video receiver for surround sound content
- Glow-key remote control, icon-based on-screen displays, V-chip, and an auto-clock
The figures are tied to Germany or European reviews and to different periods and measures. The sources do not provide a controlled head-to-head study of CRT and current LCD/LED/OLED TVs under the same usage, repair and replacement assumptions. There is no single defensible number here for how long “a TV” lasts.
How CRTs and flat-panel TVs differ
A CRT forms an image with a cathode-ray tube; common modern sets use flat-panel technologies such as LCD with an LED backlight or OLED. These designs have different components and failure modes, but the technology label alone does not establish which individual set will be more reliable. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes CRTs and display technologies; it does not provide a comparative lifespan verdict.

The European Commission’s preliminary repairability findings identify remote controls, external power supplies and internal power boards among components likely to fail or break. RTINGS has reported backlight failures in tested LCD televisions. Its longevity and burn-in work also discusses the risk of cumulative static-image exposure on OLED displays. These are examples of possible faults and risks, not evidence that all modern TVs are short-lived or a population-wide estimate of lifespan.
RTINGS’ results come from selected units tested under its stated conditions. They can help explain how failures occur, but they do not predict how long every model will last in ordinary use. The Commission’s repairability observations likewise do not prove that CRTs are always cheaper or easier to repair today.

What affects the life of a particular TV
- Model and display type: CRT, LCD with LED backlight and OLED sets have different components, and implementations vary by model.
- Use and environment: Operating hours, brightness, static content and surroundings can matter. The cited sources do not establish one standardized usage assumption for comparing eras.
- What failed: A panel or tube, backlight, power supply, control board or remote can each cause a different problem; a fault in one component is not the same as a worn-out display.
- Repair conditions: Diagnosis, parts availability, technician access, cost and whether repair restores acceptable picture quality all affect whether a set can stay in service.
- Why it was replaced: A defect-driven replacement is different from replacing a working TV for newer features, a larger screen or personal preference.
How to compare two real televisions
For a meaningful comparison, first decide what “lasted longer” means: time until hardware failure, years of useful service, or years before replacement. Then compare the specific models and display types, their use and environment, the failed component, repair options and the actual reason for replacement. Without those details, a story about one long-lived CRT and one failed flat-screen cannot establish an era-wide reliability difference.
