There is no universal RPG rule for companion romance, recruitment, party size, or death. Each game defines its own systems, and even one game may change them through patches or story milestones. In Baldur’s Gate 3, recruited companions can wait at camp and be swapped into the adventuring group, although Larian says you eventually must commit after the first act. In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, romance develops through dialogue, companion quests, and gifts, with a later commitment to one partner. Death rules are equally specific: a narrow Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5 feature resurrects companions for ending cinematics, but it is not proof that companion death is never permanent.
Why companion answers must name the RPG first
“Can I romance them?”, “Can I recruit them later?”, “How many companions can I take?”, and “Can they die permanently?” sound like general RPG questions, but they describe separate mechanics. A game may let you recruit a character without making that character romanceable; it may allow a large roster while limiting the number who travel with you; and it may distinguish a downed companion, a dead companion, a scripted death, and a character removed from the story.

Use the game title, platform or edition when relevant, and current patch level before relying on a guide. Official material for the examples below illustrates the difference rather than establishing a genre-wide rule. Larian’s companion FAQ and community updates describe Baldur’s Gate 3; Electronic Arts’ guide describes Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Neither source publishes a universal RPG formula.

Baldur’s Gate 3: relationships react to your character and choices
Larian describes relationships in Baldur’s Gate 3 as reactive to the player character and to decisions made in conversation, combat, exploration, and faction interactions. Camp conversations are an important place to develop relationships, and Larian specifically presents camp as a setting for companion dialogue, including romance. The design means there is no single “romance button” that guarantees a result: how you treat people, which causes you support, and how you handle events can affect what a companion thinks of your character.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Larian’s Community Update #7 frames the system around player authorship. Lead writer Sarah Baylus said, “At the end of the day this remains a D&D game and the most important character in a game of D&D is you.” That is an Early Access-era design statement, not a current step-by-step rule or promise that every companion accepts every character. For an exact romance trigger, use current in-game dialogue and guidance for the version you are playing.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard: several romances before a commitment point
Electronic Arts says romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard can progress through flirtatious dialogue, siding with companions, completing their quests, and buying gifts. You can pursue multiple companions initially, but eventually you must commit to one romantic partner; after that commitment, you cannot romance the others. EA also states that all seven companions are possible romantic partners regardless of Rook’s race, faction, class, or gender.
That seven-person figure is specific to The Veilguard, not a statistic for RPGs generally. The commitment point is also a game-specific story rule. If you are trying to keep options open, read dialogue carefully and complete companion content before selecting an explicit commitment response.

A practical romance checklist
- Confirm that the character is both recruited and romance-eligible in the named game.
- Use companion conversations as well as the main quest; relationship scenes may require returning to camp or another home base.
- Choose dialogue and faction decisions consistently with the companion’s values when the game makes approval or affinity reactive.
- Complete personal or loyalty quests and check whether gifts are an intended progression method.
- Identify the commitment scene before declaring exclusivity. In The Veilguard, commitment ends other romance options.
- Check the current patch notes if a guide was written during early access or before a major update.
Can I recruit a companion later?
What the Baldur’s Gate 3 FAQ establishes
Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 FAQ says recruited companions remain at camp when they are not in the active adventuring party. You can return to camp and swap companions in and out. This separates recruitment from day-to-day party selection: a companion does not have to occupy a travel slot to remain available to you.
The same FAQ says players eventually have to commit after the first act. That qualification matters. “You can swap companions at camp” does not mean unrestricted swapping for every later story situation, nor does it guarantee that every recruit remains available after every choice. Story decisions, failed encounters, and progression gates can still affect who is present.
Why a missed recruit cannot be answered generically
The official materials reviewed here do not provide a complete recruitment roster or a universal rule for recovering every missed character. One game may offer a later meeting, another may remove the character permanently, and a third may require a particular quest state. A guide that gives recovery instructions without naming the game, version, and character is likely to overgeneralize.

For a spoiler-sensitive answer, identify the exact companion and the point where you lost access. Then verify the current official FAQ, patch notes, or an up-to-date game-specific guide. Do not assume that loading a later save, returning to camp, or advancing the main quest will restore a missed recruitment opportunity.
Recruitment questions to ask before making a major choice
- When is the first recruitment opportunity? Record the location, quest, and story act rather than relying on a vague chapter name.
- Is the character permanently recruitable? Some appearances are temporary or conditional.
- Does refusal differ from delay? A “not now” response may be recoverable, while an explicit rejection may not be.
- Does a faction or companion decision close the route? Check consequences before resolving a major allegiance quest.
- Where does the character wait? In Baldur’s Gate 3, recruited companions who are not traveling can wait at camp.
How many companions can I take?
Active party slots and total recruited companions are different
“Party limit” can mean at least two things:
- Active adventuring-party limit: the number of characters who accompany the player into exploration and combat at one time.
- Total recruited roster: the number of companions who remain available at camp, a headquarters, or another holding area even when they are not active.
These values are not interchangeable. A game can have a small active party and a much larger recruitable roster. Larian’s FAQ confirms the camp-and-swap model for Baldur’s Gate 3, but the passage reviewed does not state a numeric party limit. Do not turn that omission into a guessed number.
What to verify for a named game
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many active slots are available? | Determines combat composition and who receives experience or quest scenes. |
| Can inactive recruits remain accessible? | Shows whether recruiting more characters expands your options or displaces them. |
| When can the lineup be changed? | Camp-only changes create different planning demands from field swapping. |
| Are story missions locked to specific companions? | A party cap may prevent seeing every companion reaction in one visit. |
| Does the limit change by act, mode, or patch? | Early-game and late-game rules may differ, especially after a major update. |
For the sources covered here, a numeric universal limit is not stated. Treat any number as valid only when it is attached to a named game and version.

Can a companion die permanently?
“Dead” can describe several different states
Before looking for a yes-or-no answer, identify the state the game is using:
- Downed or incapacitated: the companion is unavailable during a fight but can recover under ordinary rules.
- Recoverable death: a revival spell, item, healer, checkpoint, or scripted sequence can restore the character.
- Story removal: the companion leaves, is imprisoned, or becomes unavailable without technically dying.
- Permanent death: the character cannot return in that playthrough.
- Scripted death: a story event overrides ordinary revival mechanics.
A resurrection feature for one situation does not erase these distinctions.
What Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 5 actually says
Larian’s Patch 5 notes state: “Withers will sneakily resurrect any dead companions that fell before the final battle so they can join the ending cinematics.” The wording is narrow in three ways: it concerns companions who died before the final battle, it specifies Withers, and it explains the purpose as participation in ending cinematics. It does not specify ordinary revival rules, all death states, scripted deaths, or what happens in other RPGs.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Therefore, the defensible answer for Baldur’s Gate 3 is conditional: a particular pre-final-battle death can be reversed for the ending-cinematic context described in Patch 5, but that note is not a blanket guarantee that companions can never die permanently.
How to check a death before continuing
- Pause and identify whether the character is downed, dead, missing, or marked as having left.
- Review the game’s current revival options, including available spells, items, healers, or checkpoint reloads.
- Check whether the death occurred during a scripted quest scene or final-battle sequence.
- Read the patch notes for your installed version; revival behavior can be changed without changing the quest text.
- Create a separate save before accepting a consequence that might remove the companion permanently.
Side-by-side: what the documented examples show
| Mechanic | Baldur’s Gate 3 | Dragon Age: The Veilguard |
|---|---|---|
| Romance progression | Reactive to character choices; camp conversations support relationship development. Exact current triggers are not stated in the cited FAQ. | Flirtatious dialogue, companion quests, siding with companions, and gifts; EA says all seven companions can be romance partners. |
| Multiple romances | Not stated in the cited official material. | Possible before commitment; after committing, other romances are unavailable. |
| Inactive companions | Recruited companions can wait at camp and be swapped at camp. | Not stated in the cited official material. |
| Numeric active-party limit | Not stated in the cited FAQ passage. | Not stated in the cited EA guide. |
| Missed recruitment recovery | No complete roster or universal recovery rule is supplied in the cited material. | Not stated in the cited official material. |
| Death and revival | Patch 5 describes Withers resurrecting companions who died before the final battle for ending cinematics; broader rules are not established by that note. | Not stated in the cited material. |
A reliable method for any other RPG
When the game is not one of the examples above, use this sequence instead of importing assumptions from another series.
- Name the game and version. Include expansion, edition, platform, and patch when mechanics differ.
- Separate the four questions. Romance eligibility, recruitment timing, active slots, and death permanence may be controlled by different systems.
- Locate the official rule. Check the developer’s FAQ, patch notes, codex, or in-game tutorial before relying on a community summary.
- Record the trigger and the lockout. Note what starts a romance, what recruits a companion, and what decision can close either route.
- Test only with a safe save. Keep a pre-quest save before faction resolutions, companion confrontations, or commitment scenes.
- State uncertainty precisely. “The official guide does not state whether this can be recovered” is more useful than guessing.
Common mistakes that produce bad companion advice
- Using “party” to mean both roster and active team. Always define which one you mean.
- Copying a romance route from another game. Approval meters, gifts, flirtation, and commitment scenes are not standardized.
- Treating a resurrection note as immortality. A narrowly described cinematic exception cannot answer every death scenario.
- Ignoring release-era differences. Early Access design commentary, launch rules, and later patches may not match.
- Promising that a missed recruit can be recovered. Recovery is character- and quest-specific unless the developer documents a general mechanism.
- Giving an unsourced number. No numeric universal party limit is established by the official examples here.
Bottom line for players
Ask the question with the game’s name attached. Baldur’s Gate 3 demonstrates a camp-based roster and choice-reactive relationships, while Dragon Age: The Veilguard demonstrates multi-romance progression followed by an exclusive commitment and seven romance-eligible companions. Neither example supplies a universal party-limit number or a cross-game permanent-death rule. Save before irreversible choices, check current patch documentation, and treat every recruitment, romance, and revival answer as specific to the character and version in front of you.
