RPCS3 and PlayStation Plus Premium offer different ways to play some PS3 games: RPCS3 emulates games locally on a compatible computer, while Premium streams eligible titles from Sony’s Classics Catalog. Neither route guarantees access to every PS3 game. Check the exact game’s RPCS3 compatibility entry or your region’s current PlayStation Plus catalog before you commit to either option.
RPCS3 vs. PlayStation Plus Premium at a glance
| Question | RPCS3 | PlayStation Plus Premium |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Emulates a PS3 game locally on a computer. | Streams eligible PS3 Classics Catalog games from Sony’s service. |
| Where you play | On a compatible computer. RPCS3 lists Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD; performance depends on the device. RPCS3 official site | On supported devices for eligible titles, including PS5. Sony’s US materials also describe streaming supported catalog games on PS4, PS5, or PC. |
| Which games are available | Compatibility depends on the specific game ID and release media, and results can change as the project updates its compatibility information. | Only eligible games currently in the Classics Catalog, with availability dependent on region and device. |
| Internet | Emulation runs locally rather than as a cloud stream. | Broadband is required. Sony’s US guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming. |
| Cost shape | The emulator is open source; computer and legitimate game acquisition costs vary. | Requires an active Premium subscription; a supported device and internet connection are also needed. |
These options are not interchangeable libraries. RPCS3 is software you run yourself; Premium is a subscription service with a Sony-controlled catalog. For native disc playback, a functioning original PS3 is the straightforward console route.

Can I play PS3 games on PC?
Yes, in some cases, using RPCS3. The project describes it as an open-source, multi-platform PS3 emulator and debugger, with builds for Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. A compatible operating system alone does not guarantee good performance: the project cautions that results vary by device. Its FAQ’s detailed minimum requirements were last edited in 2020, so consult the current official site, current setup guidance, and the game-specific notes rather than treating old figures as a hardware-buying specification.

Is RPCS3 compatible with my game?
Check the exact release, not only the title name. RPCS3 tracks compatibility by Game ID and media, so a disc release and a digital release of the same game may have separate records. Search the game’s ID in the RPCS3 Game Compatibility list and read the entry’s notes before assuming it will work.
The project defines “Playable” as games that “can be completed with playable performance and no game breaking glitches.” That label is a project status, not a promise of identical performance on every computer. Compatibility entries and statuses are updated over time, and some games may remain unsupported or have incomplete features.

Can PS5 play PS3 games?
PS5 can stream eligible PS3 Classics Catalog games through PlayStation Plus Premium where the service and title are available. Sony describes PS3 catalog games as streaming-only; a PS5 does not run PS3 discs natively. Check the current US PlayStation Plus games catalog, or the catalog for your region, for the specific title before subscribing.

Can I play PS3 games on PS Portal?
No. Sony’s cloud-streaming information says PlayStation Portal currently supports selected PS5 titles for cloud streaming, not PS3 games. See Sony’s cloud-streaming support information; device support and available titles can vary by country.

Do I need PlayStation Plus Premium to stream PS3 games?
Yes. Sony’s PS3 Classics Catalog streaming route requires an active Premium subscription, a supported device, broadband, and a title that is streamable in your region. Sony’s US guidance lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed and 15 Mbps for 1080p. Those are service guidance figures, not a guarantee of smooth streaming: Sony notes that quality and connectivity can vary with the network. See Sony’s getting-started information and catalog access support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which option should you choose?
- Choose RPCS3 if you want local emulation on a computer and your exact game release has suitable compatibility notes for your setup.
- Choose Premium streaming if Sony offers the specific PS3 title in your region, your device supports it, and you prefer a managed stream over local emulation.
- Choose an original PS3 if you want the native-console route for PS3 discs and local play. Sony’s support page listed system software version 4.93 as current on October 7, 2026; see PS3 system software support for official update methods.
Before choosing either digital route for a particular game, verify its current availability: RPCS3’s per-release compatibility can change, and Sony’s catalog varies by time and region.
