Yes. On 30 September 2026, the Royal Navy said its experimental XV Excalibur uncrewed underwater vessel successfully launched and controlled an inert, recoverable US Navy Mk 48 Mod 4 heavyweight torpedo during a trial in Scotland. The announcement does not say a live warhead was used, and it does not establish that the capability is operationally deployed. The Royal Navy’s description of the weapon as the “world’s deadliest” is not supported by comparative evidence in its announcement.
Did the UK fire a torpedo from a robotic submarine?
It did in a trial launch. The Royal Navy’s 30 September 2026 announcement says the 12-metre XV Excalibur successfully fired and controlled a torpedo at the British Underwater Test and Evaluation Centre (BUTEC), near Kyle of Lochalsh on Scotland’s northwest coast. Excalibur is an experimental extra-large uncrewed underwater vessel (XLUUV), not a crewed submarine.

The three-week experiment involved the Royal Navy, US Navy, the UK Submarine Delivery Group Autonomy Unit, MSubs (Excalibur’s builder) and QinetiQ (which operates the BUTEC range). The Navy says Excalibur and the torpedo were not designed to work together in this arrangement; a specialist management system was used to launch and control the weapon.
Which torpedo did the Royal Navy test from Excalibur?
The weapon was a US Navy Mk 48 Mod 4 heavyweight torpedo, not the UK Spearfish. The Royal Navy describes the Mk 48 as nearly six metres long and weighing over 1½ tonnes, approximate figures given in its announcement. It says the weapon is designed to destroy adversary submarines and warships.

- Plastic model kit
- Paints sold separately unless stated
The announcement provides no comparative lethality ranking or evidence that would establish the Mk 48 as the world’s deadliest torpedo. That phrase should therefore be treated as an unverified superlative, not a measured conclusion from this trial. Nor does a successful integration launch establish how the Mk 48 compares with other weapons in performance.
Was the torpedo test live?
No live-warhead use is reported. The Royal Navy says the test used an inert, recoverable version of the torpedo. It describes a successful launch and control trial, not a live-warhead attack. The announcement does not publish firing telemetry, range, speed or targeting results.

What does the trial demonstrate—and what remains unproven?
The stated result is that Excalibur launched and controlled this torpedo configuration using a specialist management system, despite the vessel and weapon not having been designed for joint deployment in this way. That is an integration milestone. It is not, by itself, evidence of operational readiness, deployment, or demonstrated combat effectiveness.

It says the trial aimed to show that an uncrewed system could undertake undersea-warfare operations without risking personnel. Those are the Navy’s stated aims; the announcement does not establish that Excalibur has been deployed on operations.

What comes next for XV Excalibur?
The Navy calls this the first launch in a series of US-initiated trials expected to grow in scope and complexity. Its stated longer-term aim is to put torpedo-launching uncrewed vessels on operations around the world. These are plans, not a confirmed deployment schedule or proof that an operational capability is already in service.
XV Excalibur entered service in May 2025, according to the Royal Navy, which describes the experimental vessel as a way to accelerate adoption of advanced technologies. First Sea Lord General Sir Gwyn Jenkins said: “These trials mark a pivotal moment for AUKUS and show what the UK, Australia and the United States can achieve together.” Lieutenant Commander David Iwanek, the UK trial director, said the achievement “paves the way for a step change in underwater lethality.” Both comments are statements by participants in the programme, rather than independent assessments of its effects.
