That is one way to bring AI help into Excel desktop; it is not proof that every custom setup can directly or safely edit a workbook.

Its central practical point is to test suggested formulas rather than trust them without checking.

What “without paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot” does—and does not—tell you
It means the workflow is not necessarily using Microsoft 365 Copilot. It does not establish that the AI service has no separate cost. A custom connection to an API may have its own charges, and the available evidence does not state whether this build uses a paid API, a free allowance, or another arrangement. Nor does the title establish whether the user already pays for Excel or another Microsoft plan.
Before adopting a similar setup, determine what service receives the prompt, whether workbook content is sent with it, how that service bills usage, and whether the script writes changes into the file. “Not paying for Microsoft 365 Copilot” is not the same as “free,” “local,” or “private.”

How it differs from Copilot in Excel
Microsoft describes Copilot in Excel as supporting worksheet edits, data generation and transformation, highlighting, sorting and filtering, web information retrieval, and searches across work files for context. Its FAQ lists three modes—edit, plan, and chat—and says they are available on Windows, Mac, and the web. Eligibility depends on subscription; enterprise use may also depend on tenant configuration. These products should be compared by the task, not just by the word “copilot.” Copilot in Excel has documented workbook-oriented modes and capabilities. The cited custom-integration paper establishes an API-connected script-button approach, but not that the particular build offers the same direct editing, context access, platform support, or governance. The table separates what is documented from what remains specific to an implementation:

Microsoft’s listed qualifying routes include Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with an AI credits plan, Microsoft 365 Premium, a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription, or an eligible Microsoft 365 or Office 365 business or enterprise subscription. Because names, eligibility, and availability may change, check the FAQ for the account, region, and organization that will actually use the feature. Microsoft also documents model-switching options for workbook editing under specified subscription and administrator conditions; do not assume that option is available on every account.
What to verify before using a custom integration
AI-generated formulas and edits are suggestions to validate, not authoritative spreadsheet results. Microsoft warns that Copilot output can be inaccurate and says users should review, edit, and verify it before relying on it. O’Beirne’s formula examples make the same practical point for chatbot-generated lookup formulas.

- Protect the original: test the integration on a copy of the workbook, especially if it may write changes. If you use a shared file, edits saved to it can be seen by people who have access.
- Check the result in context: inspect formula references, ranges, assumptions, and returned values. Test representative cases, including missing matches or unusual data, before using an output in decisions.
- Understand the data path: establish what prompt and workbook data leave Excel, which service receives them, and whether organizational rules permit that transfer.
- Know what can change: identify whether the integration only returns advice or can modify cells, and how to recover if an edit is wrong.
- Confirm the economics: check whether API use is billed separately. The paper does not provide a price or establish that its described approach is free.
Python in Excel is a different option
Python in Excel can be useful when the need is Python-based analysis, but it is not simply local Python running inside a workbook and it is not the custom API copilot described above. Microsoft says Python calculations run in its cloud, require an internet connection, and use a standard library distribution provided by Anaconda; a local Python installation is not required.
