Router Compromised by a Botnet? How to Isolate, Reset, and Reconfigure It Safely

A reboot is not a cleanup. Isolate a suspect router, use the manufacturer’s reset and firmware steps, change default credentials, and replace unsupported hardware when possible.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your router may be part of a botnet, disconnect it from the internet, then reset and reconfigure it before putting it back into service. A reboot alone is not a reliable cleanup. On a supported router, install the correct current firmware, set a new administrator password, and disable internet-facing remote management. If the manufacturer no longer provides security updates, replace the router when possible.

Suspicious settings, unexplained connectivity problems, or overheating can be warning signs, but none proves a botnet infection by itself. Treat them as reasons to investigate cautiously, not as a diagnosis.

What to do first if you suspect a compromised router

  1. Disconnect the router’s WAN or internet connection if it is actively redirecting traffic or showing changes you did not make. Avoid using the suspected connection for banking, email, or account recovery; use mobile data or another trusted connection instead.
  2. Record useful details before resetting, if practical: router model and hardware revision, firmware version, the changes or symptoms you noticed, and approximate times. This can help when contacting the manufacturer or an incident responder.
  3. Do not rely on a power cycle. In its 2024 EdgeRouter advisory, the FBI says rebooting does not remove the malware it addressed. A 2018 FBI notice described rebooting as a temporary disruption measure for VPNFilter, not lasting remediation. Reset the router—or replace it if it is unsupported

For a supported router

Use the manufacturer’s hardware factory-reset procedure for the exact model and hardware revision. Button locations and reset sequences vary, so do not assume a universal press duration. For the compromised EdgeRouters covered by a DOJ/FBI remediation, the prescribed sequence included a hardware factory reset, firmware upgrade, and credential changes.

For an end-of-life router

If the manufacturer has stopped providing security patches, replacement with a currently supported router is the safer choice when feasible. A reset cannot restore security support. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the precise model and revision before deciding; the FBI warns that end-of-life devices no longer receive vendor software updates. Decision factor Reset and keep Replace
Security firmware Manufacturer still supports the exact hardware revision and provides current firmware. Manufacturer has ended security support or no suitable update is available.
Secure setup You can follow the manufacturer’s reset and configuration instructions and change default credentials. You cannot reliably reset or secure the device, or its controls cannot meet your needs.
Remote access controls Remote administration can be disabled or appropriately restricted. Exposed remote-management features cannot be adequately controlled.

Update firmware before normal use

Get firmware from the router manufacturer’s official support channel and verify that it matches both the model and hardware revision. Install the latest firmware or available security patches according to the vendor’s instructions. The cited advisories do not establish a single offline-update procedure for every router, so follow the model-specific instructions rather than improvising or using an unrelated firmware file.

Reconfigure the router before reconnecting devices

  1. Set a new administrator password. Use a strong, unique password that is not reused for email or other accounts. A factory reset can restore default administrator credentials; the DOJ warns that leaving those credentials unchanged can leave a router open to reinfection or similar compromise. U.S. Department of Justice: Court-Authorized Disruption of a GRU-Controlled Botnet
  2. Disable internet-facing remote administration unless you have a clear need for it and can protect it. If the router offers firewall rules or access restrictions, prevent unwanted exposure of remote-management services.
  3. Review other settings. Check administrator accounts, DNS settings, port forwarding, and connected devices for changes you cannot explain. These are useful checks, not proof that any particular change means the router was infected. Disable unused services and ports; if the router offers UPnP and you do not need it, consider turning it off.
  4. Secure Wi-Fi. Choose the strongest encryption mode supported by the router and your devices. The FTC’s small-business guidance says to ensure WPA2 or WPA3 is offered and enabled. Change the Wi-Fi password if you believe it may have been exposed.
  5. Reconnect in stages. Once current firmware and non-default credentials are in place, reconnect the WAN, then household devices. Watch for recurring settings changes or unusual connectivity. If the router remains suspect, contact the manufacturer or a qualified incident responder before relying on it.

Disabling unused services and separating IoT devices from other network equipment can reduce exposure where the router and network design support those controls. The FBI and partner agencies recommend these measures for botnet mitigation; they may not be available or practical on every home network. Protect accounts if information may have been exposed

Some router campaigns have involved collecting information passing through compromised devices; the FBI described this possibility in its VPNFilter alert. If you have reason to believe account credentials or personal information were exposed, use a trusted connection to contact the relevant providers, secure affected accounts, change passwords, and enable alerts for suspicious access or transactions. In the United States, the FBI’s end-of-life router notice directs suspected victims to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); include relevant incident and equipment details when reporting.

Official guidance addresses specific campaigns and devices, not a universal infection test or a guarantee that one reset will eradicate every threat. The sequence above is a cautious way to apply the stated containment and remediation measures to a home or small-office router.
