Router Firmware Updates vs. Replacing an End-of-Life Router: Which Is Safer?

If your router is still receiving security updates from its manufacturer, install the latest official firmware. If its security support has ended, replacing it with a model that has a clear update policy is generally safer. A final firmware update does not restart support or patch vulnerabilities discovered later. Check the support status for your exact model and hardware revision before deciding.

Should you update your router or replace it?

Use the manufacturer’s support status as the deciding factor:

  • Supported, with security firmware available: install the newest official firmware using the manufacturer’s instructions, then check for future updates and security notices.
  • End of life or end of security support: plan to replace the router with a currently supported model. The FBI advises: “If the router is at end of life, replace the device with an updated model if possible.” FBI guidance
  • Status unclear: search the manufacturer’s support site for the exact model and hardware revision. Review its firmware history and security notices, or ask the manufacturer directly.

A router that still works, remains available from a retailer, or receives a feature update is not necessarily still receiving security support. CISA’s end-of-support guidance is an authoritative example, but its directive applies to covered U.S. federal agencies—not as a consumer legal requirement. CISA directive

Why a last firmware update is not enough

Firmware updates can fix known security problems, but support status determines whether the manufacturer is expected to provide fixes for newly discovered ones. Once security support ends, the last available build cannot address future vulnerabilities. The FBI says end-of-life routers stop receiving software updates and security patches, and recommends replacement if possible. FBI alert

“End of life” can refer to different milestones, such as the end of software maintenance, vulnerability support, or all support. Check what the vendor means for your particular product rather than assuming that one lifecycle date describes every kind of support. Cisco’s dated notice for specific enterprise routers illustrates how separate milestones can be listed; its dates and policy should not be applied to consumer routers. Cisco lifecycle notice

How to update a supported router safely

  1. Confirm the model and hardware revision. Use the label on the router or the manufacturer’s app or admin interface. Firmware for a similar model or a different hardware revision may not be appropriate.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s official support page or app. Look for the latest firmware, its release information, and any security notices. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends getting update files only from the manufacturer’s official website and checking when the last update was issued. ACSC router guidance
  3. Follow the model-specific instructions. Prefer the vendor’s automatic update mechanism when offered. If you must install firmware manually, download it only from the official source and verify that it matches the exact model and revision.
  4. Keep the router powered during installation. Do not interrupt power while the update is being applied. Allow the router to restart and confirm that it reconnects and reports the expected firmware version.
  5. Check for updates periodically. A successful update today does not establish that the router will continue receiving security fixes. Follow vendor advisories and keep its support status under review.

How to choose a safer replacement

Newer hardware is not automatically better supported. Compare the exact model’s security-support terms and update process, then make sure it fits your internet service and household:

  • Published security support: Is there a clear support commitment or end-of-support date for this model?
  • Update delivery: Does it offer automatic updates, or clearly notify owners when updates are available?
  • Internet compatibility: Will it work with your provider, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), and service plan?
  • Household needs: Does it provide the coverage, wired ports, and capacity for your connected devices? Does it include controls you rely on, such as guest networks or parental controls?

There is no universal support-duration minimum, best model, or price/value ranking established by the cited guidance. Verify current product details and support terms before buying. The ACSC recommends considering automatic-update support when choosing a replacement. ACSC guidance

What the 2026 FCC router-update waiver means

In the United States, an FCC Office of Engineering and Technology notice released May 8, 2026, permits certain foreign-produced routers that were already authorized before being placed on the Covered List to continue receiving software and firmware updates that mitigate harm to U.S. consumers through at least January 1, 2029. That date is a regulatory waiver point—not a manufacturer support promise or a deadline to replace a router. The waiver is narrow: it does not establish that a particular model is supported or that every router is affected. FCC OET notice DA 26-454
