Nothing documents the ordinary update flow, but rooted-device steps depend on the exact phone, firmware, partition setup, and rooting method. Use the standard Settings route only when you understand what the update may do to your root setup; do not flash boot images or follow another model’s instructions.
What to do before you update a rooted Nothing Phone
First identify the details that determine whether a root procedure applies to your phone. Nothing’s general update instructions do not provide a root-preserving sequence, and Magisk’s documentation distinguishes device types.

- The exact Nothing Phone model.
- The installed firmware build and the build offered by the OTA.
- The root tool and method used on the phone.
- The device’s partition and update setup, including any model-specific instructions for handling an OTA while rooted.
Back up important data before changing boot-related images or applying an update. Use only instructions that explicitly match your model and firmware. If you cannot verify a matching procedure, do not experiment with an image from another model or build; seek model-specific expert guidance or contact Nothing support.
Install an OTA through Settings
For the normal, manufacturer-documented update flow, Nothing Support says to use Wi-Fi and have at least 50% battery for downloading and installing the update. The route is Settings > System > System updates.

- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi and charge it to at least 50%, following Nothing’s general update guidance.
- Open Settings > System > System updates.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
- Wait for the upgrade to finish. Nothing advises not to press the power button or take other actions during the process.
This is Nothing’s ordinary OTA workflow, not a guarantee that root will remain installed or functional afterward. The reviewed Nothing guidance does not establish that outcome for every rooted model or firmware.
Why an OTA can affect root
Android’s A/B update documentation describes a design in which an update is written to the unused slot while the current system is running; the device then attempts to boot using the updated slot. If that slot cannot boot successfully, the previously working slot can provide a fallback.

This general Android mechanism does not establish that every Nothing Phone uses the same setup, nor does it guarantee that root survives an update. Root commonly involves modified boot-related images; whether an OTA replaces or accepts those changes depends on the device and update implementation. Do not infer a Nothing-specific root procedure from A/B behavior alone.
If the OTA will not install
Nothing’s separate troubleshooting guidance for a failed OTA says the battery must be at least 40%, and recommends checking network signal and available storage. That 40% threshold is for its failure troubleshooting advice; Nothing’s general check-and-install guidance separately recommends at least 50% for a smooth download and installation.

- Check that the phone has a stable network connection and enough free storage.
- For the failed-update troubleshooting flow, charge the phone to at least 40% as Nothing specifies.
- If the update still fails after those checks, Nothing advises contacting customer support.
