Choose a roomy or relaxed button-down for more ease and movement; choose a slim-fit shirt for a closer shape through the torso and sleeves. Neither is universally better. Since brands use fit labels differently, compare the actual shirt measurements and check how it sits at the shoulders and chest.
What do roomy and slim fit mean?
Fit names are brand-specific, not standardized measurements. One retailer’s “regular” may have more ease than another’s “slim,” so the label alone cannot tell you how a shirt will fit.

Roomy, relaxed, regular, and classic
M&S describes its relaxed fit as roomy and its regular fit as fitted without being too tight. Gap describes its regular shirt as having ease through the chest, sleeves, and waist. Ralph Lauren uses “Classic” for its roomiest silhouette. These are each brand’s own definitions, not a shared sizing system.

M&S describes slim shirts as snugger through the chest and sleeves. Gap’s slim shirt is contoured through the chest and waist, with slim-cut arms. Ralph Lauren places Slim at the trimmest end of its fit range, with Custom Slim between Slim and Classic. Those descriptions can help you understand a particular brand’s range, but they do not guarantee a particular measurement.

How to choose the right silhouette
- Choose roomy if you value ease of movement or prefer a shape that does not sit close to the body. M&S suggests relaxed fits for casual outfits and breathable fabrics such as linen; that is its styling guidance, not a universal rule.
- Choose slim if you prefer a closer silhouette through the torso and sleeves, provided the shirt still allows comfortable movement.
- Consider how you will wear it. Tucking can change how excess fabric looks or feels. In one Reddit post, a wearer said the chest fit but the waist bunched when tucked. That is one person’s experience, not evidence of how shirts fit most people.
Check the measurements and how the shirt sits
Start with a shirt you already like. Compare its measurements with the maker’s chart for the new shirt, checking shoulder width, chest, waist, sleeve width and length, and shirt length. Use the specific garment or brand information rather than assuming that the same size or fit name means the same thing across brands.
Shoulders and chest come first
M&S’s fit guide says, “The shoulder seam should sit right at the top of your shoulder.” Check that the seam position works for you, then make sure the chest allows comfortable movement. If the collar or shoulders are wrong, changing the body fit alone may not fix the issue.

Use the shirt’s intended tuck and length
Think about whether you plan to tuck the shirt in. Compare its length with a shirt you wear the same way, and consider whether extra fabric around the waist will bunch when tucked or hang the way you want when untucked.

Why measurements matter more than fit labels
A Mango House size M guide illustrates how measurements can differ between cuts within one brand: its regular-fit shirt lists a 49.5 cm shoulder width and 114 cm chest, while its slim-fit shirt lists a 44 cm shoulder width and 110 cm chest. These are Mango House’s figures, from an undated guide accessed in 2026; they are not typical industry measurements or a rule for other brands.

For another brand-specific example, Ralph Lauren’s Slim Fit Oxford Shirt product page describes a cotton Oxford with a button-down point collar, close body fit, fitted sleeves, and higher armholes. It also lists size-medium garment measurements. Product details and availability may change, so consult the current page and size chart for the exact shirt rather than treating its description as a general definition of slim fit.

- Decide whether you want more ease or a closer shape through the body and sleeves.
- Choose a specific shirt and check its own size chart rather than relying on “roomy,” “regular,” or “slim” alone.
- Compare shoulder, chest, waist, sleeve, and length measurements with a shirt that fits well.
- Check shoulder-seam placement and movement across the chest, then consider how the shirt will look tucked or untucked.
The retailer guides cited here describe their own products; they do not establish that one silhouette is more popular or objectively better. Your preferred look, comfort, and the measurements of the individual shirt are the useful deciding factors.
