For the Roomba 105 Vac, better cleaning usually comes from four changes: send the robot to the right rooms, raise or lower suction for the mess, add passes in high-traffic areas, and schedule cleaning often enough to prevent buildup. Use Spot Clean for a small, concentrated spill and keep-out zones for spaces the robot should never enter. These controls are available through the Roomba Home app, although menu names can change with app updates.
This guide focuses on the dry-vacuum Roomba 105 Vac. iRobot also sells a Roomba 105 Combo with mopping controls; those features are separated below so you do not apply them to the Vac by mistake.

First, confirm whether you own the Roomba 105 Vac or 105 Combo
The name “Roomba 105” is ambiguous. The 105 Vac is the dry-vacuum model relevant to this article. The 105 Combo adds a mop pad and separate mopping behavior. Check the model name in the app, on the robot, or on its packaging before changing settings.
| Control or behavior | Roomba 105 Vac | Roomba 105 Combo |
|---|---|---|
| Dry vacuuming | Room targeting, suction selection, multiple passes, Spot Clean, scheduling and keep-out zones | These dry-vacuum controls plus mopping modes |
| Mop-only or combined vacuum-and-mop modes | Not applicable | Supported |
| Liquid adjustment and SmartScrub | Not applicable | Combo-specific controls |
| Carpet behavior while mopping | Not applicable | The Combo product material describes automatic carpet detection while mopping |
| Zones | General keep-out zones to block access | Keep-out zones plus mopping-related no-mop guidance |
Do not look for a no-mop-zone setting on the 105 Vac. No-mop guidance applies to the Combo’s mopping workflow, not to the dry-vacuum model.

Change these settings first
1. Select only the rooms that need cleaning
Room targeting is often more useful than running the entire home at maximum intensity. In the app, choose the mapped rooms you want cleaned, skip rooms that are already tidy, or create a custom clean for a particular combination of rooms. This keeps the robot’s time and battery focused on the areas where dirt accumulates.
- Open the Roomba Home app and select the 105 Vac.
- Open the map or cleaning control for a new job.
- Choose the rooms to clean; deselect rooms that do not need service.
- Save the custom clean if the same group of rooms will be used repeatedly.
- Watch the first run to make sure the map’s room boundaries match your home’s layout.
Room selection is especially useful when the kitchen, entryway and living room need daily attention but bedrooms do not. It also makes higher suction or extra passes practical without applying them to every square metre.
2. Set suction to match the debris
iRobot says the 105 Vac offers four suction levels. Use the lower or middle levels for light maintenance and reserve the strongest setting for heavier debris, grit near entrances, pet-hair areas or carpets that need more agitation. “Higher” is not a universal best setting: stronger operation can increase noise and may reduce runtime, according to iRobot’s general Roomba support guidance. That guidance is not a measured battery test of the 105 Vac.
Change suction by opening the cleaning options for the selected room or custom clean and choosing the available suction level. If your app shows a default such as Standard or Normal, use it as the starting point, then increase intensity only where the results justify it.
3. Add passes in high-traffic rooms
The 105 Vac supports multiple vacuum passes. One pass is efficient for routine dust. Two or more passes can help in entryways, under a dining table, beside a litter area, or anywhere dirt is repeatedly tracked in. Extra passes use more time and battery, so assign them to selected rooms instead of the entire map whenever possible.
| Situation | Suggested starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily dust and crumbs | Standard or Normal routine, one pass | Balances coverage and runtime |
| Entryway or other high-traffic floor | Higher suction and an additional pass | Targets tracked-in grit and embedded debris |
| Pet-hair area or visibly dirty room | Increase suction first; add a pass if needed | Concentrates the intensive work where it matters |
| Small, fresh spill in one location | Spot Clean | A full-home run is unnecessary |
Because floor type, debris and furniture vary, treat these as starting points rather than guaranteed presets. Check the result after a run and adjust the affected room rather than making every cleaning cycle intensive.

Use Spot Clean for a localized mess
Spot Clean is designed for a small area such as dropped cereal, tracked-in soil or crumbs under a high chair. iRobot states that the 105 Vac repeatedly cleans one area for up to five minutes. Start Spot Clean from the app when the mess is localized, and remove large objects that could obstruct the robot before beginning.
Spot Clean is not a substitute for a room-level schedule. It treats the immediate area, while routine room cleaning prevents dust from accumulating elsewhere.
Build a schedule that matches how your home gets dirty
The app can schedule cleaning jobs. A useful schedule follows traffic patterns rather than using the most intensive settings every day. For example, schedule frequently used rooms on a regular cadence and add an occasional higher-suction, extra-pass job for the entryway or kitchen.
- Open the robot’s scheduling control in the app.
- Create a cleaning time when floors are normally clear and people are less likely to interrupt the run.
- Select the rooms or saved custom clean to run.
- Choose suction and pass settings appropriate to that job.
- Review the schedule after changing furniture, adding a pet, or changing household routines.
There is no single schedule that suits every home. A small, low-traffic apartment may need less frequent room cleaning than a busy home with children, pets or outdoor access. Scheduling only works as intended when the robot can reach the rooms and its brush path is maintained.
Set keep-out zones before the robot causes problems
Use a keep-out zone to block an area the robot should avoid: a place with cables, fragile objects, pet bowls, a low shelf that traps the robot, or a section that is temporarily inaccessible. iRobot’s 105 Vac product information confirms support for app keep-out zones.
The Tool Desk

- Choose the map-editing or zone option.
- Draw the keep-out area over the room section to avoid.
- Save the map and verify that the zone covers the whole hazard, including its approach.

Keep-out zones are access restrictions, not cleaning-strength controls. They do not increase suction or add passes in neighboring rooms. Recheck them after remapping or major furniture changes because map geometry can change.

Recommended settings by cleaning job
Routine whole-home maintenance
Use room selection or a saved custom clean, standard suction and one pass. This is the efficient baseline for removing ordinary dust and crumbs. If the app presents a Normal routine, iRobot’s 100/1000 support description associates Normal with high suction and one pass; liquid and SmartScrub details in that support material concern Combo models and should not be transferred to the 105 Vac.
Entryway and kitchen reset
Select only the rooms that collect the most debris, raise suction one level or more, and add an extra pass. Clear shoes, bags and loose cables before starting. If grit remains after the run, inspect the brushes and vacuum path before simply selecting the highest setting everywhere.
Pet-hair or high-traffic zone
Use targeted room cleaning with stronger suction. Add another pass when the first run leaves visible hair. The higher setting may be louder and can shorten runtime, so reserve it for the rooms that need it.
One-off spill
Use Spot Clean for the affected area for its supported cycle rather than launching a full-home job. Remove large pieces that could clog the intake first.
Rooms that should remain untouched
Create a keep-out zone and test it once under supervision. For a temporary obstruction, a keep-out zone can be removed after the area is safe again.
When changing settings does not improve pickup
Settings cannot compensate for a restricted air path or a brush carrying packed debris. iRobot’s general debris-pickup guidance recommends inspecting and cleaning the brushes and the vacuum path when pickup remains poor. Check the model’s current owner’s guide for the exact removal and cleaning procedure for the 105 Vac.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Pause the robot and inspect the main brush area for hair, thread or compacted dirt.
- Check the filter and replace or clean it according to the owner’s instructions.
- Look into the vacuum inlet and path for a blockage.
- Make sure the dustbin is seated correctly and not full.
- Clear cords, socks and other objects that can stall the brush.
- Run a short, supervised room clean after maintenance to confirm airflow and pickup.
If the robot is still leaving debris, note whether the problem affects every floor or only one room. A room-specific problem may indicate an obstacle, map boundary or floor transition; whole-home poor pickup makes brush, filter and vacuum-path checks more important.

iRobot markets the 105 Vac with “70X more power-lifting suction.” That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independently verified performance result. The product-page extract does not identify the comparison baseline or include the explanatory footnote, so use the statement as marketing context rather than a laboratory measurement.
The four suction levels and Spot Clean duration of up to five minutes are also iRobot product claims. App labels and available controls can change, so confirm the options shown by the current app and owner’s guide for your region and software version.
Common mistakes and fixes
Running maximum suction everywhere
Problem: More noise and potentially shorter runtime without a proportional cleaning benefit.
Fix: Target stronger suction and extra passes to the rooms that are genuinely dirty.
Recommended Free Tools
Adding passes instead of cleaning the brush path
Problem: A blocked intake or brush can leave debris behind regardless of pass count.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteScheduling rooms the robot cannot reach
Problem: A schedule appears to run, but blocked doors, clutter or an inaccurate map prevent coverage.
Fix: Verify room boundaries, clear the route and supervise the next scheduled run.
Assuming a map never needs checking
Problem: Furniture changes or remapping can alter room boundaries and zone placement.
Fix: Review the map after significant layout changes and retest keep-out zones.

A practical adjustment sequence
If you are asking, “How do I get my Roomba 105 to clean better?”, use this order so each change has a clear purpose:
- Confirm that the robot is the 105 Vac rather than the 105 Combo.
- Inspect and clear the brushes, filter and vacuum path.
- Select only the rooms that need attention.
- Run the standard or Normal routine with one pass.
- Increase suction for a room that still has visible debris.
- Add an extra pass only where the higher suction is insufficient.
- Use Spot Clean for isolated spills.
- Add keep-out zones for hazards or unwanted access.
- Schedule the resulting room routine at a cadence that fits household traffic.
This sequence separates mechanical problems from setting choices and keeps intensive cleaning focused on the places that benefit from it.
