Roku Keeps Cutting Out: How to Check Each Symptom

Buffering, a black screen, and random restarts point to different Roku problems. Identify the symptom, isolate the failing part of the setup, and apply the right fix.

“Cutting out” can mean buffering, a lost picture, or the Roku restarting—and each points to a different part of the setup. For buffering or Wi-Fi drops, check the Roku’s network connection and the apps or titles affected. For a black screen, check the TV input and HDMI path. For restarts or a low-power warning, check how the Roku is powered. Use the symptom-led checks below before replacing equipment.

First identify what is cutting out

Notice what happens immediately before the interruption. A spinning indicator or frozen stream suggests a playback or connection problem; a blank screen while the Roku remains on suggests a video-signal path problem; a Roku that goes through its startup sequence suggests a power interruption or restart.

What you see First area to check
Buffering, weak-signal message, or Wi-Fi disconnect Roku network status, home Wi-Fi, and internet use
Black screen or intermittent picture TV input, HDMI connection, and any receiver or soundbar in the signal path
Roku startup screen or repeated reboot Power source and adapter
One app, title, or service fails Other content in that app, then the service’s status

If the Roku buffers or drops Wi-Fi

Check the connection reported by the Roku

  1. On the Roku, open Settings > Network > About and check the signal strength.
  2. Choose Check connection to test whether the Roku can connect to the network and internet.
  3. If the signal reads Poor or Fair, or the test fails, restart the Roku, modem, and router. Roku’s Wi-Fi connection guidance describes Poor and Fair readings as weak signal.

Improve the wireless path before changing equipment

  • Move the Roku and router closer together, reduce obstructions, and avoid enclosing the Roku in a cabinet.
  • If a Streaming Stick is tucked behind the television, the TV can obstruct its wireless signal. Roku recommends moving it away from the TV with its free HDMI extender; check whether you already have one before buying anything.
  • Consider whether other devices are using the connection heavily while you stream.
  • If both the Roku model and router support a 5 GHz network, test it. Some Roku models cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels. If a supported network does not appear, Roku suggests trying router channels 36–48 or 149–165.
  • Ethernet can help isolate a wireless problem only if your Roku device or a compatible adapter supports it.

Roku says buffering, Wi-Fi drops, or a weak-signal message usually indicate a problem with the wireless connection between the Roku and router. That is a useful first check, not proof that the router is at fault; placement and obstructions can also matter. See Roku’s connection troubleshooting steps.

If the screen goes black or the picture cuts in and out

  1. Confirm the TV is on and set to the HDMI input used by the Roku.
  2. Firmly reconnect the HDMI cable or Streaming Stick, and make sure the Stick is seated securely.
  3. Try another HDMI port on the TV. If a different cable is available, test it before replacing the existing one.
  4. If the Roku connects through an AV receiver or soundbar, connect it directly to the TV temporarily. If the direct connection works, the intermediate device or its connections may be involved.

Roku’s black-screen troubleshooting guidance covers checking the TV input and signal path. For setup, Roku recommends the supplied HDMI cable. If a replacement is needed, its guidance specifies a High Speed HDMI Cable for a TV supporting 720p or 1080p, and a Premium High Speed HDMI Cable for 4K Ultra HD or HDR. A 4K/HDR connection must also support HDCP 2.2. See Roku’s setup instructions.

If the Roku restarts or shows a low-power warning

A TV USB port may not supply enough power for a Roku player. Roku recommends connecting the player to a wall outlet with the supplied power adapter when a low-power warning appears or the player restarts randomly. Some TVs also turn off USB power when switched off or placed in standby; when the TV comes back on, the Roku may boot again. Roku explains this behavior in its article about players restarting when the TV turns on.

If only one app, title, or streaming service fails

  1. Try another title in the same app, then try a different app.
  2. If several titles or apps fail, check the Roku’s network connection and whether other devices are using the internet heavily.
  3. If only one title or service fails, check the provider’s service status. An app-specific account or playback problem may need help from that service.
  4. If an app will not load or repeatedly crashes, check whether an app update is available.

Roku’s content playback troubleshooting distinguishes broader connection trouble from problems limited to a particular app or service.

Use a quick isolation sequence

  1. Write down whether the failure is buffering, a black screen, or a restart.
  2. For loading or buffering, run the Roku network check and note its signal reading.
  3. Compare more than one app or title to see whether the failure is isolated.
  4. Check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi are affected. If possible, connect the Roku to another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot. If it works there, the home network may be the issue.
  5. For picture loss, test another TV input and temporarily bypass a receiver or soundbar by connecting the Roku directly to the TV.
  6. For low-power messages or restarts, try the supplied adapter in a wall outlet.

If the problem persists after these checks, contact Roku support or your internet service provider when the issue points to the device or network. If it affects only one service or its content, contact that provider instead.

When a factory reset is worth considering

Reserve a factory reset for persistent problems after the relevant network, HDMI, power, and app checks. A reset erases the Roku’s settings, and you will need to set up its apps again. Because the reset does not identify whether the original cause was Wi-Fi, HDMI, power, or a service, it is a poor first step. Roku includes reset guidance in its connection troubleshooting article.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Roku’s support pages provide diagnostic steps, but they do not publish a prevalence study ranking the causes of devices “cutting out.” There is therefore no supported percentage or single most-common cause to apply to every setup. The symptom and isolation checks are more useful than assuming every interruption requires a new router, cable, or player.
