Follow the standard early-game buy order
- Use inexpensive melee at the start. Spend as little as you can while handling opening catches and reaching the first island. The goal is to avoid delaying your first firearm.
- Save for the shotgun. NerdsChalk’s August 30, 2026 guide lists it at $150 and recommends it as the first major weapon purchase for a normal run. The same guide recommends skipping the pistol on this route.
- Buy damage upgrades in response to difficulty. Start with the cheaper steps and add upgrades when creatures are slowing your progress; there is no need to complete the entire path immediately.
- Consider the assault rifle later. The guide names it as a later purchase. A separate item guide recommends buying the shotgun before boat engine upgrades, but that is strategic advice rather than a requirement for every player.
These recommendations come from guides published before the September 2026 update. Inspect the in-game shop before committing to an exact order in the current version.

When a co-op speedrun calls for a different route
The shotgun-first order is for straightforward progression. NerdsChalk describes a specialized co-op speedrun route that invests in an upgraded pistol instead. It is an alternative for a planned handoff route, not evidence that pistol spending is generally better.

Use dynamite for gathering, with care
Two item guides list dynamite at $25 and describe it as useful for collecting multiple fish or quest materials. They do not recommend treating it as a dependable close-range combat option. Dazed Games’ official Patch 1.0.11 announcement says, “You will now die from your own explosives even with friendly fire disabled.” Plan for self-damage, even when friendly fire is off.

Account for the September 2026 update
Dazed Games announced Islet Update 1.1.0 on September 28, 2026. The announcement lists a new weapon, mini islands, creatures, a mini-boss, items, bait, an NPC, achievements, and an outfit, but does not name the weapon or give its price, availability, or effect on the opening route. The older price guides therefore cannot establish a complete current shop order.

Patch 1.0.11, announced September 1, 2026, also says purchasable iron sights were removed and changes explosive self-damage behavior. Do not rely on older attachment lists or assume explosives are harmless to the user.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should co-op players change the first weapon priority?
Only if the group is following a planned co-op speedrun route. The cited guide describes an upgraded-pistol route for that specialized purpose; for ordinary progression, it recommends saving for the shotgun.
When should you stop upgrading the shotgun and save for the assault rifle?
