You can change supported Roku sound settings without losing installed apps, but Roku does not offer a universal audio-only factory reset for a TV or streaming player. A factory reset of the TV, player, or projector removes apps and account information. If you mean a separate Roku wireless speaker, soundbar, or subwoofer, that accessory has its own reset procedure and must be paired again afterward.
Choose the reset that matches the problem
| What you want to reset | What happens to apps and account data | What you need to do afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Sound settings on a Roku TV or player | Changing supported sound settings does not require a device factory reset. | Available controls depend on the Roku model and connected audio equipment. |
| Roku wireless speaker, wireless soundbar, or subwoofer | The accessory is reset separately from the TV or player. | Pair and set up the accessory again with its Roku host. |
| Entire Roku TV, player, or projector | The device is unlinked from the Roku account; apps and account information are removed. | Complete Guided Setup and activation, reinstall apps, and sign in again. |
Roku’s factory-reset instructions say that a device reset unlinks it from the account and removes apps and account information. If your goal is to fix sound while keeping apps installed, start with sound settings and troubleshooting instead.

Change sound settings without resetting the whole device
- Start playing content on the Roku device.
- Press the remote’s Star or Options button.
- Choose Advanced sound settings or Sound settings, if that option is available, and adjust the controls you need.
Roku’s sound-settings guidance also describes using the Roku mobile app: select the Roku device, then open Sound settings. The app can be an alternative when playback prevents you from changing a setting with the remote. The available controls and labels vary by device and connected equipment.

Settings for a Roku TV Ready soundbar may not appear in the sound-device menu described above. Use the Roku TV system to access the manufacturer-specific sound modes. Do not assume that every Roku model or soundbar exposes the same controls.

Troubleshoot before resetting a Roku TV or player
First check whether the sound problem occurs in one app or across several apps and inputs. That distinction can help identify whether the issue is limited to particular content or an app, or affects the Roku device more broadly. Roku’s audio troubleshooting guidance recommends narrowing down the symptom before taking more disruptive steps.
- If the problem is limited to one app, try the narrower app-specific steps Roku documents, such as removing and reinstalling that app.
- If you use a streaming player, restarting it is a less disruptive troubleshooting step than a factory reset.
- If the issue affects multiple apps or inputs, review the sound settings available for your Roku model and connected audio equipment before considering a device reset.
Roku’s app troubleshooting instructions cover removing and reinstalling an individual app when it will not load. These targeted steps are distinct from wiping the whole Roku device.

Reset a Roku wireless speaker, soundbar, or subwoofer
This procedure applies to Roku Wireless Speakers, Roku TV Wireless Soundbar, Roku Wireless Bass, and Roku Wireless Bass Pro. It resets the accessory, not the TV or player. Roku says the accessory disconnects from its host, returns to initial setup, and must be paired again.
When the wireless audio device is paired
- On the Roku home screen, go to Home > Settings > Remotes & devices > Speakers.
- Select the wireless speaker, wireless soundbar, or subwoofer.
- Choose Factory reset and enter the on-screen code.
When the wireless audio device is unpaired
- Find the physical Reset button on the audio device.
- Hold it firmly for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the status LED to blink, indicating the reset is complete. A speaker or soundbar may play pairing instructions.
Reset each wireless audio device separately. A short press of the Reset button only restarts it; it does not perform a factory reset. See Roku’s wireless audio reset instructions for the product-specific procedure.

Factory-reset the entire Roku TV, player, or projector
Use this only if you intend to erase the device and set it up again. A full reset removes personal preferences, unlinks the device from your Roku account, and removes apps and account information.
Before starting
- Roku account email address and password
- Wi-Fi network name and password
- Sign-in details for streaming apps
- Parental-control PIN, if you have set one
Reset through Settings
- Go to Home > Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
- On a Roku TV, select Factory reset everything.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. You can navigate with a Roku remote or the mobile app.
Afterward, complete Guided Setup and activation, reinstall the apps you use, and sign in to each one. Do not expect account-linked apps to return already installed on the device. Roku’s factory-reset support article provides model-specific physical reset-button directions for TVs, players, and projectors; the button method is not universal. It describes Recovery Mode for Roku TV as the most invasive reset method, so reserve it for cases where other methods fail.
