AI is changing content creation by taking on parts of the writing workflow—such as brainstorming, research organization, outlining, drafting, rewriting and editing—while people still need to guide the work, verify facts and make editorial decisions. It is better understood as an aid to particular tasks than as an all-or-nothing replacement for a human writer.
How AI fits into the writing process
A writer can use a generative AI system at several stages: to suggest angles for a piece, turn a topic into research questions, arrange notes into an outline, draft a rough passage, adjust tone or length, or flag sentences that may be unclear. These are different uses, with different levels of human involvement. Asking for ideas is not the same as asking a system to produce a finished article.

Survey evidence illustrates some of that range. In a UCLA report published in July 2025, 66% of students reported using generative AI during the academic year, based on the 2024 University of California Undergraduate Experience Survey. A majority of surveyed students said they used tools to brainstorm a writing project, research a topic or study for exams. This describes those students, not all writers or students across the United States. UCLA’s report does not establish that AI independently verifies a student’s research or produces work ready to submit without review.

Wiley’s 2025 announcement of its ExplanAItions study says its deep-dive survey received 4,946 responses from researchers in August and September 2024, within a global study of nearly 5,000 people. Wiley reported AI adoption among 44% of researchers outside China and Germany, compared with 59% in China and 57% in Germany. These are survey results reported by Wiley, not a census or a universal adoption rate. The study covered 43 research-process use cases and reported expectations that AI use would expand. Wiley’s study summary also reports that more than 60% of researchers globally cited a lack of guidelines and training as a barrier to increased use; around 70% wanted publishers to provide guidance on acceptable uses and avoiding errors and pitfalls.

Can AI write content for you?
AI can generate a draft or transform existing text, but that does not make the result reliable, original or ready to publish. Fluent wording is not proof that a claim is true, that sources support it, or that the writing meets a particular audience’s needs. The evidence cited here documents people using AI for tasks such as brainstorming and research; it does not show that AI can produce publishable work without editing or improves every user’s writing.
Potential workflow advantages include exploring more possible approaches, getting started when a blank page is a barrier, and handling routine transformations such as summarizing or adapting tone. Those are plausible uses, not measured time savings or guaranteed improvements. AI may also produce factual errors or generic, unoriginal prose. The research findings above do not quantify how often those problems occur.

How to use AI without giving up editorial control
- Set the task and boundaries. Decide whether you need ideas, an outline, a transformation of your own text or a draft. Give relevant context and constraints, but do not treat a generated answer as evidence.
- Verify factual claims. Check names, dates, figures and other consequential claims against primary sources. Follow citations to the underlying material rather than assuming a generated citation is accurate or relevant.
- Review the writing as an editor. Check whether the passage answers the reader’s question, represents sources fairly, uses an appropriate voice and says anything unsupported or needlessly broad. Revise or remove material that does not meet those standards.
- Protect sensitive information. Do not enter confidential client, employer, student or research material into a service unless its data handling is acceptable for that information and permitted by the relevant rules.
- Check policy and disclosure requirements. Schools, employers, publishers and clients may set different limits on permitted uses and disclosure. Find the rule that applies to the assignment before using AI, and disclose assistance when required.
In Ireland, Quality and Qualifications Ireland surveyed 1,229 staff and 1,005 learners across further education, higher education and English-language education between December 2024 and February 2025. Its summary emphasizes varied perspectives, institutional support, training and academic integrity; it does not give detailed use percentages. That is a reminder that policy and expectations can differ by institution and role, rather than a basis for assuming one rule applies everywhere. Read the QQI survey analysis.
What AI-assisted writing means for copyright in the United States
In its Part 2 report, released January 29, 2025, the U.S. Copyright Office said generative-AI output may be copyrightable when a human author determined sufficient expressive elements. The Office identified a human-authored work perceptible in the output, or creative human arrangement or modification, as possible ways that human authorship can be expressed. Merely supplying prompts is not enough under the Office’s stated position. At the same time, AI assistance—or including AI-generated material within a larger human-generated work—does not by itself prevent the larger work from being copyrightable. The Office’s summary is U.S.-specific, not a statement of copyright law in other jurisdictions or blanket legal advice. The Copyright Office’s Part 2 announcement includes Register of Copyrights and Director Shira Perlmutter’s statement: “Where that creativity is expressed through the use of AI systems, it continues to enjoy protection.”

AI can contribute suggestions, drafts and revisions, but a person remains responsible for deciding what to ask, what to trust, what to change and what rules apply. The adoption figures available here concern particular student and researcher groups, not a universal rate for writers. Use AI where it helps with a defined task, then apply verification and editorial judgment before the words leave your draft.
