- Open my.roku.com/signup.
- Enter the requested personal information and an email address you can access, then create a secure password.
- Choose a PIN and set parental controls when prompted.
- Add a payment method only if you want one or the current signup flow requests it. Review the options and continue.
Roku’s account-creation guidance was last updated June 17, 2026. Screen labels and steps can change, so follow the prompts currently displayed. You can also create an account during setup of a new Roku TV or player, on The Roku Channel website, or through The Roku Channel app on compatible Samsung TVs. If you already have a Roku account, sign in to it rather than making a duplicate.

How to activate a Roku TV or player
Creating an account and linking a device are related but separate steps. If you are setting up a streaming player or stick, first connect the hardware, turn on the TV and select the correct input, set up the remote, connect the player to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and install any software update. Then complete activation:

- Open the Roku email on a phone, tablet, or computer and select Activate device, or scan the QR code shown on the TV.
- Sign in to an existing Roku account or finish creating a new one.
- Leave the TV on the activation screen until the setup process completes.
Roku’s activation guidance, last updated July 9, 2026, says activation is free. A streaming stick may need its included HDMI extender depending on how it fits behind the TV; that is a connection issue, not an account requirement.

Do you need a Roku account, and is it free?
Roku says an account is needed to activate its devices and manage Roku services. Roku also states that it does not charge to create an account or activate a device. An account does not require buying a Roku player or TV: you can register online without purchasing hardware.
Do you have to add a payment method?
A payment method is not an account fee. Roku says it charges only for purchases or active subscriptions made through Roku. Adding a payment method can make purchases and signups quicker, but you can leave it out if you do not want to use it and the current flow permits you to continue.

Should your Roku devices use one account?
Use one account for devices you want to manage together. Roku says devices on the same account can share account-level settings such as payment information, PINs, parental controls, subscriptions, and preferences; app additions or removals can synchronize across those devices, and Roku Channel playback can resume on another linked device.

Separate accounts may suit household members who need different app sets or controls. Roku says each account should use its own valid, unique email address. A subscription service may have its own limits on how many devices can use an account.

The activation email did not arrive
- Wait a few minutes, then check spam or junk mail and search your inbox for “Roku.”
- Confirm that the email address on the TV is spelled correctly.
- Resend the activation link from the activation screen. If the original link expired, use a newly sent one.
The QR code will not scan
- Adjust the phone’s distance or angle and make sure the TV screen is clean.
- Use code entry instead if the TV offers that option.
The Roku device cannot connect to the internet
- Check the Wi-Fi password and connection, or confirm the Ethernet connection.
- If the connection still fails, restart the router and Roku player, then try connecting again.
An internet connection error is different from an account or payment problem; resolve the network connection before retrying activation.
