Choose the conviction that matches the character you want to role-play, then commit before rank III. Dogmatic is the uncompromising Imperial-loyalist route, Iconoclast protects people and human potential, and Heretical follows Chaos and corruption. These are not cosmetic labels: conviction points unlock abilities, and reaching Votary (rank III) in one branch limits the other two to Adherent (rank II).
If you are undecided, make honest mixed choices early while you learn your character, but select a priority before your decisions push one conviction to 200 points. There is no evidence that one path is universally strongest or guarantees the best ending; the right choice depends on your role-play, preferred abilities, and tolerance for the lock-in.

What convictions do in Rogue Trader
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader tracks three convictions: Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical. Dialogue decisions are the most visible source of points, but exploration events and colony development can also award them, according to the WH40K Rogue Trader Wiki’s Convictions entry. Your total in each branch controls its rank and the associated ability or other bonus.
Recommended Free Tools
Convictions also change how the protagonist is presented in a brutal setting. A choice that grants points is not always a simple good-or-evil score: a Dogmatic answer can be lawful but cruel, an Iconoclast answer can be compassionate but strategically risky, and a Heretical answer can be tempting while advancing a corrupting agenda. Treat the labels as worldviews, not as a morality meter with one objectively correct side.

Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical at a glance
| Path | Role-playing premise | Typical appeal | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dogmatic | Uphold Imperial orthodoxy, the God-Emperor’s law, and suppression or destruction of what is judged alien or unorthodox. | Playing a severe, uncompromising Imperial loyalist whose authority comes from institutions and doctrine. | Its methods can be ruthless; it is not automatically the practical or benevolent option. |
| Iconoclast | Preserve compassion, human possibility, and noble action in a cruel universe. | Protecting civilians, resisting needless cruelty, and trying to make power serve people. | Idealism does not guarantee positive consequences in a setting built around danger and compromise. |
| Heretical | Embrace Chaos, the Warp, and corruption of the soul. | Exploring a fall-to-Chaos story and deliberately transgressive choices. | It is a corruption arc with narrative costs, not a neutral alternative to the other two paths. |
The broad descriptions above follow the community encyclopedia and the author-maintained GameFAQs character-creation guide. Individual scenes can subvert the expected tone, so judge a choice by its wording and context instead of selecting every option that carries a familiar label.
Dogmatic: Imperial authority without compromise
What the path represents
Dogmatic characters accept the Imperium’s hierarchy, law, and religious certainty. They are prepared to enforce order through interrogation, censorship, punishment, or extermination when they believe a threat is alien, heretical, or politically dangerous. This route suits a protagonist who sees authority as a shield against an even worse future and who is willing to sacrifice individual freedom for collective survival.
Who should choose it
- Choose Dogmatic if your character places Imperial doctrine above personal sympathy.
- Choose it if you enjoy commanding subordinates, judging disloyalty, and making hard-line decisions in dialogue.
- It is a natural fit for a character who treats the Rogue Trader’s warrant as a mandate to impose order rather than negotiate every dispute.
Mechanical identity
The GameFAQs guide lists five Dogmatic unlocks: Grim Determination, Absolution, Path of Redemption, Piercing Resolution, and Instrument of His Will. Its descriptions include a chance to survive with one wound, burning or bonus fire damage, reduced Momentum expenditure, armor-ignoring attacks, and temporary immunity to daemon and xenos attacks at the relevant ranks. The guide is not an official patch specification, and the sources reviewed do not establish how those effects perform against every current balance or DLC configuration.
Iconoclast: compassion as a deliberate risk
What the path represents
Iconoclast conviction favors human dignity, mercy, and constructive action even when the surrounding institutions encourage cruelty. An Iconoclast Rogue Trader may protect a population that the authorities would abandon, give an enemy a chance to surrender, or challenge an order that produces needless suffering. The path is idealistic, but it is not naïve by definition: an Iconoclast can understand the danger and still decide that the humane option is worth defending.
Who should choose it
- Choose Iconoclast if you want your protagonist to prioritize civilians and companions over rigid procedure.
- Choose it if you prefer persuasion, reform, and creative solutions to immediate execution or suppression.
- It fits players who want the character’s power to be tested by the responsibility to use it well.
Mechanical identity
The guide names Above the Thundering Guns, Master of Command, Courage and Steel, Transcend the Potential, and Excellence as Iconoclast rank rewards. The first three are associated with Follower, Adherent, and Votary in the guide; the later names are listed for the higher ranks. The reviewed material does not provide a complete, current comparison of their damage, action economy, or survivability against Dogmatic and Heretical abilities, so the path should not be marketed as a hidden optimal build.
Heretical: a deliberate descent into Chaos
What the path represents
Heretical conviction embraces the Warp, forbidden knowledge, and the corruption of the soul. The encyclopedia notes that Heretical progress can come not only from decisions but also from corrupted items and forbidden knowledge. That makes the route feel like an accumulating contamination rather than a series of isolated rebellious answers: the character’s tools, discoveries, and alliances can all become part of the fall.

Who should choose it
- Choose Heretical if you want to examine why a powerful person would bargain with Chaos despite knowing the danger.
- Choose it for a campaign built around temptation, transformation, and transgressive lore.
- It is appropriate when the character’s goals or methods are intentionally incompatible with Imperial orthodoxy.
Mechanical identity
The GameFAQs guide lists Resource Preservation, Destroy the Weak, Gifts of the Warp, Daemonopathy, and Power From Beyond the Veil as Heretical rank rewards. The supplied material names those abilities but does not establish a complete effect description for each one. Do not infer that every Heretical unlock is universally stronger, or that choosing the path automatically supplies a particular Chaos build; the guide’s list is an unlock reference, not a current balance ranking.
How conviction ranks and points work
The five-rank model and thresholds below come from the GameFAQs walkthrough. They are useful planning numbers, but they are guide-reported values rather than an official, version-independent specification:
| Rank | Guide threshold | What it means for planning |
|---|---|---|
| Follower | 15 points | The first branch reward becomes available. |
| Adherent | 45 points | The second reward is reached while the branch remains flexible. |
| Votary | 200 points | Rank III; reaching it establishes the branch as your main conviction. |
| Fanatic | 300 points | A higher-rank reward in the selected branch. |
| Zealot | 500 points | The fifth and highest listed rank. |
Each branch therefore has five progression milestones, and the community encyclopedia says rank progression awards an ability or another bonus. The point totals can be earned across many types of content, so a perfect dialogue route is not required to advance. Conversely, a player who avoids a branch’s dialogue but completes its point-granting exploration or colony content may still move toward that branch unexpectedly.
The Votary lock-in: the decision that matters most
According to the community encyclopedia, once one conviction reaches Votary, the other two cannot advance beyond Adherent. In practical terms, you can collect early rewards from multiple branches, but you cannot freely take all three paths to Zealot in one playthrough. The lock occurs at 200 points, not at character creation.
Before Votary
- Mix Dogmatic, Iconoclast, and Heretical choices when they genuinely fit the character.
- Watch the conviction totals before accepting a large cluster of decisions or completing a project that awards points.
- If a companion, DLC condition, or prior rank changes an option, read the requirement instead of assuming every playthrough presents the same choice.
After Votary
- Continue selecting the chosen branch if you want Fanatic and Zealot rewards.
- The other two branches can still provide their Follower and Adherent rewards if you have not already collected them, but their progression stops at rank II.
- Do not plan a build that requires the rank-III rewards of two different convictions in the same campaign.
The GameFAQs appendix of conviction choices also shows that some options are conditional, mutually exclusive, or dependent on specific companions or downloadable content. Those conditions are another reason a published route cannot promise identical totals for every save.
Can you mix convictions safely?
Yes, up to the Votary boundary. Early mixing is a sensible way to role-play a character who has not settled on a final ideology, and it lets you collect lower-rank rewards from more than one branch. The danger is not that a single off-theme answer permanently ruins the run; it is that enough mixed choices can push an unintended branch to 200 points before you notice.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

A safe mixed-play approach
- Use the first acts to make the choice that best fits the immediate situation rather than chasing a rank.
- Check your conviction totals whenever you return from exploration, resolve a major dialogue chain, or complete a colony project.
- When one branch approaches the 200-point threshold, decide whether its Votary reward and worldview are the ones you want to carry through the rest of the campaign.
- After choosing, avoid large point awards for the other branches unless you are satisfied with them stopping at Adherent.
There is no supported method in the reviewed sources for reversing the Votary restriction. Treat it as a campaign-level commitment rather than a temporary stance that can be respecced later.
Which path is best for different players?
| If your priority is… | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial law, hierarchy, and uncompromising enforcement | Dogmatic | The worldview consistently supports institutional authority and harsh suppression of perceived threats. |
| Protecting people and resisting needless cruelty | Iconoclast | The route makes compassion and human potential central even when that creates danger or political friction. |
| A corruption story involving Chaos and the Warp | Heretical | Its choices, forbidden knowledge, and corrupted items support an intentional fall from Imperial norms. |
| Maximum flexibility while learning the game | Mixed early, then commit | You can gather lower-rank rewards before selecting the branch that will reach Votary. |
| A specific high-rank ability | The branch containing that ability | Rank III blocks the other branches from progressing past Adherent, so the target reward must be in your committed path. |
The sources do not establish a universally strongest path, a definitive damage ranking, or a universally best ending. Build priorities can change with difficulty, party composition, equipment, and later balance updates. Select a conviction because its choices and rewards support the campaign you want, not because a tier list declares one branch mandatory.
Understanding the named rank rewards
The following table consolidates the ability names listed by the GameFAQs guide. Where the reviewed material gives an effect, it is summarized with the guide’s qualification; where it does not, the cell identifies the reward without inventing a description.
| Path | Follower (15) | Adherent (45) | Votary (200) | Fanatic (300) | Zealot (500) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dogmatic | Grim Determination — a chance to survive with one wound. | Absolution — burning or bonus fire-damage effects are described by the guide. | Path of Redemption — the guide associates it with reduced Momentum expenditure. | Piercing Resolution — the guide describes armor-ignoring attacks. | Instrument of His Will — temporary immunity to daemon and xenos attacks is described by the guide. |
| Heretical | Resource Preservation | Destroy the Weak | Gifts of the Warp | Daemonopathy | Power From Beyond the Veil |
| Iconoclast | Above the Thundering Guns | Master of Command | Courage and Steel | Transcend the Potential | Excellence |
The list is a planning aid, not a promise that every effect is unchanged in every edition, patch, or downloadable-content setup. Confirm the in-game tooltip when the reward becomes available, especially if you are choosing a path for a narrowly tuned combat build.
Patch 1.3 and why launch-era routes can mislead you
Owlcat Games’ official Update 1.3 notes state that many Acts III and IV dialogue options awarding Dogmatic, Heretical, or Iconoclast points were changed to award significantly more points. The same notes say projects that awarded conviction points were doubled.
The adjustment has an important consequence for old walkthroughs. A route that reached a milestone at launch may now cross it earlier, while a player following an old sequence can arrive at Votary before realizing how much a later-act choice has accelerated the total. Owlcat also explained that choices already made and projects already completed would not retroactively apply missing points, because doing so could switch a character’s conviction involuntarily; the missing points instead arrive the next time you select an option for that conviction.

The reviewed material does not provide a complete current point table or verify every later patch and DLC exception. Use the thresholds as guide-reported targets, watch the totals shown in your own game, and be cautious with route instructions written for the launch balance.

1. Write the character’s non-negotiable belief
Before choosing a dialogue option, define one sentence your Rogue Trader would defend under pressure. For Dogmatic, that might be that Imperial order prevents humanity’s extinction. For Iconoclast, it might be that authority loses legitimacy when it treats people as expendable. For Heretical, it might be that forbidden power is justified if it can overturn an intolerable system. This sentence gives you a consistent tie-breaker when a scene offers no obviously attractive answer.
2. Separate immediate tactics from worldview
A compassionate character can make a temporary threat-based decision, and a Dogmatic character can show mercy when it serves Imperial stability. Do not force every choice into a simplistic alignment test. Look at who benefits, which institution is being defended, and whether the decision accepts or rejects the path’s underlying principle.
3. Track the first two ranks, then reassess
Follower and Adherent rewards arrive at 15 and 45 points in the guide’s model. Those milestones give you time to test how the path feels in dialogue and combat. If the role-play is no longer enjoyable, you can still alter course before one branch reaches Votary, although previously earned points and rewards remain part of the campaign.
4. Commit with the 200-point threshold in mind
When a branch nears 200 points, pause before starting a large quest chain or colony project. Decide whether its Votary reward and later Fanatic and Zealot rewards are worth giving up rank III progression elsewhere. This is the point at which build planning and role-play stop being separate concerns.

5. Verify the tooltip and conditions
Some choices require a prior rank, a particular companion, or downloadable content, and some are mutually exclusive. Read the condition displayed by the game and inspect the ability tooltip when it unlocks. A guide can identify the intended branch, but it cannot guarantee that your party, version, or quest state exposes the same option.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the paths as simple good, neutral, and evil
Dogmatic decisions can be brutal, Iconoclast decisions can create risks for people you are trying to save, and Heretical decisions can begin with understandable frustration before turning into corruption. Choose the principle, not a one-word morality label.
Mistake: assuming every branch can reach Zealot
The Votary restriction prevents the other two convictions from advancing beyond Adherent. If you want a high-rank reward, identify its branch before the 200-point milestone and protect that branch from being sidelined.
Mistake: copying a launch walkthrough without checking totals
Patch 1.3 increased many Acts III and IV awards and doubled point-granting projects. A sequence that was safe at launch can now move your totals faster. Use older guides for context, not as an exact current route.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Mistake: assuming an ability list is a balance verdict
The reviewed guides establish names and selected effects, but not a complete latest-version performance comparison. Difficulty, party composition, and later updates can change which reward feels most valuable.
Mistake: ignoring conditional choices
The appendix documents choices that depend on rank, companions, or downloadable content and choices that exclude one another. If a walkthrough says an option should appear but it does not, check those conditions before concluding that your save is broken.
What can and cannot be predicted about endings
Convictions clearly provide story reactivity, but the reviewed sources do not verify a complete set of current ending requirements or prove that one path always produces a superior finale. Your conviction can shape how scenes, factions, and companions respond, yet the outcome also depends on broader decisions, quest states, and version-specific content. Pick a path for the journey and its immediate consequences rather than for an unsupported promise about the final cutscene.
Final recommendation by play style
- Play Dogmatic for a stern Imperial loyalist who believes survival requires obedience and decisive suppression.
- Play Iconoclast for a compassionate reformer who protects people even when institutions call that weakness.
- Play Heretical for a campaign centered on Chaos, forbidden knowledge, and the character’s moral deterioration.
- Play a measured mix early if you are discovering the system, then choose one branch before 200 points when its higher-rank reward matters.
There is no need to reload every conversation to maintain ideological purity. The system is designed to let the character evolve, but the Votary lock means that evolution eventually becomes a commitment. Keep an eye on the totals, make the lock-in intentional, and let the path’s worldview—not an assumed tier list—decide your final choice.
