Phone compatibility should decide your shortlist before price. For iPhone owners, Apple Watch Series 11 is the strongest integration choice and Apple Watch SE 3 is the lower-cost Apple option. Android users who want downloadable apps should look at Samsung Galaxy Watch 7. If you use either platform and care more about training tools and fewer charges, Garmin Venu X1 is the better fit. Amazfit Active 2 is the budget cross-platform pick. Xiaomi Watch S5 remains attractive for its large AMOLED display, GPS, extensive sports modes and potentially long, scenario-dependent battery life, but its HyperOS platform does not install third-party apps.
What the Xiaomi Watch S5 offers
The global 46mm Xiaomi Watch S5 runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3 and supports Android 8.0 or later and iOS 14.0 or later. It connects over Bluetooth BLE/BT 5.4 and includes a speaker and microphone for compatible calling and audio functions. Charging uses the supplied two-pin magnetic dock, so you do not need to buy a separate charger to get started. Xiaomi notes that NFC availability varies by region.

Hardware includes a 46mm stainless-steel case, a 1.48-inch AMOLED screen, built-in GPS and 5ATM water resistance. T3’s 2026 review reports more than 150 sports modes. The 5ATM rating is a specification for a new product, not a promise that sealing remains unchanged forever; Xiaomi says water resistance can diminish with age and use.

Xiaomi presents battery endurance under separate “light usage,” “normal usage” and always-on-display scenarios. Those scenarios use different power settings, message and call activity, music playback and exercise levels. A battery figure therefore has meaning only when its test condition is included. Your result will change with GPS workouts, notifications, calls, music, screen brightness and always-on display.

The biggest functional distinction is software. Frandroid’s 2026 review says the Watch S5 is not a Wear OS watch and does not allow third-party app installation. You get the functions Xiaomi provides rather than an app-store catalogue. That can be a worthwhile trade for simpler operation and lower charging frequency, but it rules out buyers who expect to add downloadable watch apps later.
Quick shortlist: which alternative fits your phone and priorities?
| Priority | Best fit | Phone support | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best iPhone integration | Apple Watch Series 11 | iPhone | TechRadar lists 24-hour battery life. |
| Lower-cost iPhone option | Apple Watch SE 3 | iPhone only | Rated for 18 hours; low-power mode can extend runtime. |
| Training features and longer battery | Garmin Venu X1 | Android and iPhone | Minimal buttons, some navigation frustration and lower endurance with always-on display. |
| Budget cross-platform choice | Amazfit Active 2 | Android and iPhone | Smart functions do not equal a full third-party app ecosystem. |
| Android app features | Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 | Android only | Some health functions, including sleep-apnea detection, require a Samsung phone; LTE is optional. |
| Large display, GPS and many sports modes without an app store | Xiaomi Watch S5 | Android 8.0+ and iOS 14.0+ | No third-party app installation; NFC varies by region. |
These watches are not interchangeable. Operating-system support, phone-brand restrictions, app depth, training emphasis and charging frequency differ enough that a cheaper watch can become the wrong purchase if it cannot work with your phone or preferred services.
Best Xiaomi Watch S5 alternative for iPhone: Apple Watch Series 11
TechRadar’s 20 August 2026 guide names Apple Watch Series 11 its overall iPhone smartwatch pick. The reason is integration: watchOS and iOS are designed to work together, so the watch is the natural choice when you want Apple’s notification, communication and phone-control experience rather than a cross-platform compromise.
Choose Series 11 when your priorities are smooth iPhone pairing, a mature first-party software environment and broad daily smartwatch functions. It is a better match than the S5 if installing apps and using an iPhone-centered ecosystem matter more than minimizing charging.
TechRadar lists 24-hour battery life. Treat that as the guide’s stated rating, not a guarantee for every configuration. GPS exercise, frequent calls, brighter displays and always-on settings can reduce the interval between charges. If you are replacing an older Apple Watch, confirm that your specific iPhone and required watchOS version are supported before ordering; the cited guide establishes iPhone compatibility but does not provide a universal model-by-model compatibility table here.
Lower-cost iPhone choice: Apple Watch SE 3
Tom’s Guide identifies Apple Watch SE 3 as its budget Apple option. It is iOS-only, includes GPS and health and sleep tracking, and is aimed at buyers who want the Apple Watch experience without moving to the higher-priced line.
The stated battery rating is 18 hours. Tom’s Guide notes that low-power mode can extend it, with the usual consequence that some functions or background activity may be reduced. This is a substantially more frequent charging pattern than the endurance buyers often seek from the Xiaomi Watch S5 or Garmin Venu X1, so decide whether iPhone integration or multi-day use is more important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSE 3 makes sense for an iPhone owner who primarily wants notifications, workouts, sleep information and Apple’s interface. It does not make sense for an Android owner: the guide lists it as iOS-only, so changing phones later could force another watch purchase.
Best cross-platform fitness alternative: Garmin Venu X1
TechRadar lists Garmin Venu X1 for readers who want Android and iOS compatibility, an eight-day battery rating and a stronger training focus. It is the most compelling S5 alternative when structured fitness features and fewer charging sessions matter more than a downloadable smartwatch app catalogue.

Equipped with high-precision sensors, fitness watch accurately tracks steps, distance, calories burned, and workout duration to help analyze performance and optimize training plans. With an IP68 rating, it's resistant to sweat, rain, and handwashing (Not for swimming or hot showers)
- All-Day Health Monitoring: Android smart watch is equipped with a high-precision optical sensor that supports 24h real-time heart rate monitoring, helping you stay informed about your physical condition. It also intelligently analyzes sleep quality, accurately identifying deep sleep, light sleep, and awake phases to help improve your sleep habits. Paired with its dedicated app, you can view long-term health trends and receive personalized insights to gradually develop a healthier lifestyle
The eight-day figure is a listed rating, not a fixed result. TechRadar specifically flags lower battery life with always-on display. GPS tracking, frequent workouts, notifications and music can also alter practical endurance, so compare your normal routine with the rating’s assumptions before treating it as a schedule.
There are usability compromises. The guide notes minimal buttons and some navigation frustration. If you regularly start workouts with wet hands, wear gloves or dislike navigating menus by touch, try the control layout in a shop before buying. Conversely, the simpler physical-control design may be acceptable if your priority is training data rather than app variety.

Venu X1 is a better fit than Watch S5 for a runner, cyclist or gym user who wants a training-oriented platform that remains usable after switching between Android and iPhone. The S5 is the better fit if its 46mm AMOLED design, Xiaomi interface and broad sports-mode count appeal more than Garmin’s training emphasis.
Best cheap smartwatch under $100: Amazfit Active 2
Tom’s Guide names Amazfit Active 2 its under-$100 pick and describes it as compatible with both Android and iOS. It combines fitness, health and sleep tools in a lower-cost package, making it the straightforward alternative when the Watch S5 is beyond your budget or too large.
“Smart” does not mean “full app ecosystem.” The guide cautions that Active 2’s smart features should not be conflated with a platform offering the breadth of downloadable third-party apps found on watches built around a larger app store. Check which notifications, music controls, payment functions and services you actually need instead of assuming that a lower-cost watch replicates Apple or Samsung software.
Active 2 is the practical choice for a first smartwatch, basic workout recording and sleep tracking across phones. It is less suitable if you need specialist training analysis, carrier-connected LTE, or a deep catalogue of installed apps. The cited recommendation is a budget-tier guide pick; local price, stock and included features can differ by market.

Tom’s Guide selects Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 for Android users who value app features. It supports third-party apps and can be purchased with LTE as an option, giving it a much broader smartwatch role than the non-Wear OS Xiaomi Watch S5.
Galaxy Watch 7 is Android-only, so it is not a safe choice for someone who may return to an iPhone. There is also a phone-brand caveat: Tom’s Guide says some health features, including sleep-apnea detection, require a Samsung phone. An Android handset from another manufacturer may pair successfully while still lacking those functions.
Choose Galaxy Watch 7 when installing apps, using optional cellular connectivity and staying inside the Android ecosystem outweigh the appeal of a simpler watch. Confirm the exact health features available with your phone model and region before purchase; feature availability is not identical across every Android handset or country.

Phone-first buying guide
If you use an iPhone
- Start with Apple Watch Series 11 if the deepest iPhone integration and a full watchOS experience are your priorities.
- Choose Apple Watch SE 3 if you want the Apple interface, GPS and health/sleep tracking at a lower tier and can accept an 18-hour rating.
- Consider Garmin Venu X1 if training features and an eight-day listed battery matter more than Apple-specific integration.
- Consider Xiaomi Watch S5 or Amazfit Active 2 only after checking which notifications, health functions and phone controls work with your iPhone. Both are cross-platform on paper, but neither provides the same Apple ecosystem depth.
If you use Android
- Pick Galaxy Watch 7 when third-party apps or optional LTE are central to your decision.
- Pick Garmin Venu X1 when cross-platform flexibility and training are more important than app-store breadth.
- Pick Xiaomi Watch S5 for its 46mm AMOLED hardware, GPS and sports-mode range if you are comfortable with a fixed feature set and no third-party app installation.
- Pick Amazfit Active 2 when keeping the purchase in the budget category matters most.
If you may change phone platforms
Favor Garmin Venu X1, Amazfit Active 2 or Xiaomi Watch S5 because the cited specifications list Android and iOS support. Apple Watch SE 3 is iOS-only, and Galaxy Watch 7 is Android-only. Cross-platform support still does not guarantee identical functions: Samsung-specific health tools and region-dependent services can remain unavailable.

| Model | Published figure or condition | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Watch S5 | Xiaomi publishes separate light-usage, normal-usage and always-on-display scenarios. | Quote the scenario with any number; settings and activity determine the result. |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | 24-hour battery life listed by TechRadar. | A model rating from the cited guide; GPS, calls and display settings can change actual runtime. |
| Apple Watch SE 3 | 18-hour battery rating; low-power mode can extend it. | Plan for frequent charging, especially with workouts and sleep tracking. |
| Garmin Venu X1 | Eight-day battery rating from TechRadar. | Always-on display lowers endurance, and use patterns matter. |
| Amazfit Active 2 | Not stated in the cited recommendation. | Do not infer a battery number from its budget position. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 | Not stated in the cited recommendation. | Choose it for app and Android features rather than an unsupported endurance assumption. |
Charging hardware also differs in practical importance. Xiaomi includes its two-pin magnetic dock. Apple, Garmin, Amazfit and Samsung charging details vary by package and model, so verify what is included in the local listing rather than assuming the S5’s dock arrangement applies to another watch.
Apps, notifications and phone-dependent features
A notification mirror, a remote control and an app ecosystem are different things. Xiaomi Watch S5 can provide the functions Xiaomi built into HyperOS 3, but Frandroid says you cannot install third-party apps. Amazfit Active 2 offers smart functions, yet Tom’s Guide warns that it should not be treated as a full app platform. These watches can be perfectly adequate if you mainly read alerts, track exercise and control basic phone functions.
Apple Watch Series 11 and SE 3 are the strongest choices for iPhone-native services. Galaxy Watch 7 is the shortlist leader for Android app depth because Tom’s Guide specifically notes third-party apps and optional LTE. Garmin Venu X1 emphasizes training rather than a broad downloadable-app experience.
Phone and region restrictions deserve a separate check. Xiaomi lists Android 8.0+ and iOS 14.0+ support, but NFC availability varies by region. Samsung health features can require a Samsung phone. LTE availability and carrier activation are also market-specific. Read the local technical specification for the exact watch variant before paying.
Fitness, health and water-resistance considerations
The S5 combines built-in GPS, more than 150 reported sports modes and health-tracking functions in a large 46mm case. Garmin Venu X1 is the cited choice for stronger training emphasis. Amazfit Active 2 is positioned as a general fitness, health and sleep watch, while Apple and Samsung provide health and sleep tools within their phone ecosystems.
Consumer-watch measurements are not medical diagnoses. Treat trends as information to discuss with a qualified professional, particularly for symptoms, irregular readings or sleep concerns. A feature such as Samsung’s sleep-apnea detection also has a phone requirement, so its presence in a product description does not mean every Android owner can use it.
5ATM on the Xiaomi is a water-resistance rating, not permanent waterproofing. Xiaomi says resistance may diminish over time. Avoid turning that specification into a promise about every swimming, showering or high-pressure-water situation, and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance for your exact model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Size, fit and design
The Watch S5 discussed here is the 46mm version with a round case. That gives it a generous display but can feel bulky on a smaller wrist. Compare case diameter, thickness and weight in the same size category; a watch that looks affordable on paper is poor value if you remove it for comfort or sleep.

This android/iPhone watch for men is compatible with smartphones with Android 4.4 and iOS 9.0 or above
Apple Watch models use a different rectangular design language, while Garmin, Amazfit and Samsung offer their own case sizes and shapes. Fit affects more than appearance: loose contact can reduce the consistency of optical health readings, and a large case can catch on clothing or interfere with strength-training movements.
Price and regional availability
Prices in one country cannot be transferred directly to another. T3 reported Xiaomi Watch S5 UK pricing from £150 and EU pricing from €179 at review time. Frandroid reported French list prices of €179.99 for black or grey and €199.99 for green or blue. These are review-time reference points from 2026, not live universal prices or a promise of current stock.
Before comparing an S5 with another watch, set the market you are buying in, check the current official or retailer price, and confirm whether the listing is for the 46mm version. Taxes, promotions, LTE surcharges, storage, band bundles and regional NFC or health-feature restrictions can change the effective value.
How to compare a local deal
- Confirm the exact model name, case size and connectivity variant.
- Check Android and iOS requirements against your current phone, not a phone you may buy later.
- Verify included charging hardware and the return or warranty terms.
- Look for regional limits on NFC, LTE, payments and health functions.
- Compare the total price after tax rather than a headline promotional figure.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by price before checking the phone
A low price is irrelevant if the watch is iOS-only, Android-only or missing a phone-brand feature you need. Confirm compatibility first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Assuming every “smart” watch has an app store
The Xiaomi Watch S5 does not install third-party apps, and Amazfit Active 2 should not be treated as a full app ecosystem. Decide whether built-in functions are sufficient.
Comparing battery numbers without test conditions
Xiaomi’s figures use distinct scenarios; Apple and Garmin’s published ratings also depend on settings and use. Always retain the qualification next to the number.
Confusing a health feature with medical equipment
Use watch readings as general information. Check phone and regional requirements for specialized features, and seek clinical advice for medical decisions.
Ignoring case size
The S5 is 46mm. Measure your wrist and compare dimensions before ordering, especially if you sleep in the watch or have a smaller wrist.
A practical decision path
- Name your phone. iPhone narrows the field toward Apple; Android opens Samsung, Garmin, Amazfit and Xiaomi; a possible future switch favors cross-platform models.
- Choose your software depth. Need third-party apps or optional LTE? Start with Galaxy Watch 7 or Apple Watch. Prefer built-in tools and fewer distractions? Xiaomi, Garmin or Amazfit may fit better.
- Set your charging tolerance. The cited ratings range from 18 hours for SE 3 to eight days for Venu X1, while Xiaomi publishes scenario-based results. Decide whether nightly or multi-day charging suits you.
- Rank fitness needs. Structured training points toward Garmin; broad sports coverage points toward the S5; general budget tracking points toward Amazfit; Apple and Samsung add phone-integrated health features with their compatibility caveats.
- Check fit and local variant. Confirm case size, NFC or LTE availability, health-feature eligibility, current regional price and what is in the box.
Which Xiaomi Watch S5 alternative should you buy?
Buy Apple Watch Series 11 for the most complete iPhone integration, or Apple Watch SE 3 when the lower-cost Apple route matters more than battery endurance. Choose Garmin Venu X1 for cross-platform training and its eight-day listed battery rating, accepting the touch-heavy controls and reduced always-on endurance. Pick Amazfit Active 2 when you need an inexpensive Android/iPhone watch for everyday fitness and sleep tools. Select Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 when Android apps and optional LTE are priorities, provided your phone supports the health features you want.
Stay with Xiaomi Watch S5 if Android 8.0 or iOS 14.0 compatibility, its 46mm AMOLED design, GPS, more than 150 reported sports modes and built-in feature set meet your needs. Its defining limitation is also its clearest buying criterion: it is not Wear OS and does not install third-party apps.
