A robot vacuum can offer local commands without being fully usable offline. Before buying, check the exact model and the integration you plan to use: setup, everyday commands, status, maps, room cleaning, and cloud fallback may each work differently. Home Assistant documents a local Matter-over-Wi-Fi path for the SwitchBot Multitasking Robot K20+ Pro, and a local-plus-cloud pattern for many supported Roborock vacuums. Neither example establishes that every feature works locally on every model.

What “local control” does—and doesn’t—mean

Local control means that some communication between the vacuum and your smart-home system happens on your home network rather than through a vendor’s cloud. It does not automatically mean you can set up the robot, use every feature, or recover from problems without an internet connection or account.

Home Assistant describes local protocols as continuing to work on the home network when the internet or a vendor’s cloud is unavailable. But individual integrations can still use cloud services for setup or as a fallback. Its Roborock integration, for example, documents local commands and polling alongside cloud setup and fallback for many supported vacuums. Home Assistant’s reliability FAQ and Roborock integration documentation explain those distinct behaviors.

Also distinguish a platform’s general vacuum interface from support for a particular device. Home Assistant’s Vacuum integration is a building block used by integrations for specific products, not a universal connector that makes any robot locally controllable.

Which capabilities should you verify?

Check each capability for the exact model, firmware, and smart-home integration you intend to use. “Works locally” is not a complete compatibility answer.

Capability What to ask
Setup Can you add and configure the vacuum without an account or access to the manufacturer’s cloud? Does setup require an internet connection even if routine communication is local?
Everyday control Can the platform start, pause, stop, and resume cleaning on the local network? Which of those commands still work if the internet or vendor service is down?
Status and automations Which state updates are reported locally, and how quickly? Can automations read the status they need without cloud access?
Maps and room cleaning Can the platform access saved maps and select rooms or areas, or is local access limited to whole-home cleaning?
Cleaning features Which modes and settings are exposed through the integration, rather than only in the manufacturer’s app?
Cloud fallback Does the integration use the cloud only for setup or recovery, or also for routine commands and status? What happens when the cloud is unreachable?
Exact compatibility Does current documentation name the specific model variant and, where applicable, the required firmware or platform version?
Required hardware Does your chosen connection path need a Matter controller, hub, or compatible Home Assistant installation? Confirm this for the specific configuration.

Maps and room selection need separate confirmation

A vacuum may respond to local start and stop commands but still leave maps or room selection unavailable in your chosen platform. Home Assistant’s vacuum documentation says area cleaning depends on device support; mapping saved segments to platform areas is available only when that support exists. A Matter connection or a general vacuum entity should therefore not be treated as proof that map-based cleaning is exposed.

iRobot Roomba 415X Robot Vacuum & Mop Combo, 20,000Pa, 90 Days Self-Emptying, Multifunction Dock Self-Cleaning & Hot Dry, Smart Obstacle Avoidance, Lifting Spinning Mops, Ideal for Pet Hair
  • CLEAN FLOORS EVERY DAY—WITHOUT THINKING ABOUT IT. The Roomba Plus 415X vacuums and mops in one run, stopping crumbs, dust, and spills before they turn into stuck‑on messes. With 20,000 Pa and DualClean mop pads, your floors stay visibly clean from morning and night.
  • NO MORE SCRUBBING DRIED‑ON MESSES. SmartScrub applies extra pressure exactly where messes are stubborn—breaking down dried food, muddy paw prints, and kitchen splatter, so you never have to scrub by hand again.
  • REACHES THE PLACES DIRT USUALLY HIDES. A 46% slimmer design* fits under more furniture, while extending brushes pull debris from edges and corners—so dust doesn’t collect where traditional robots miss. *Compared to Roomba 105
  • GREAT FOR HOMES WITH PETS. Tangle‑free rubber brushes capture pet fur without clogging, eliminating constant stops to cut hair off the brush.
  • EVERY CLEAN STARTS WITH A FRESH MOP—NOT YESTERDAY’S DIRT. The AutoWash Dock washes and heat‑dries mop pads at 113°F after every run, preventing odors and buildup so floors aren’t cleaned with yesterday’s dirt.

Before choosing a model, look for documentation that explicitly describes the functions you need: map access, saved-room selection, or area cleaning. If those details are absent, treat local map and room control as unconfirmed rather than assuming they come with local connectivity.

What the documented Matter and Roborock examples show

SwitchBot Multitasking Robot K20+ Pro

Home Assistant’s SwitchBot Matter integration documentation lists the K20+ Pro as a Matter-over-Wi-Fi standalone device and says Matter devices communicate locally with Home Assistant. The platform’s June 26, 2025 partnership announcement describes the K20 as the first cleaning robot in its Works with Home Assistant program.

That makes the K20+ Pro a documented candidate to investigate if you want a Matter-compatible robot vacuum. The available documentation does not establish that every vacuum-specific feature—particularly maps or room selection—is exposed through Matter, nor does it establish current stock or pricing. Check the integration’s current device notes for the exact functions you need.

Roborock models supported by Home Assistant

Home Assistant documents a hybrid connection pattern for many supported Roborock vacuums: local communication for commands and polling, with cloud use for setup and fallback. Support also varies across Q-Series variants, so a claim about a product family does not confirm support for every model. Check the current Roborock integration documentation for the exact vacuum and its feature coverage.

How to check a model before buying

  1. Name the integration first. Decide whether you intend to use Matter, Home Assistant’s model-specific integration, or another supported platform path. A product’s general smart-home compatibility does not confirm that your chosen integration exposes its vacuum features.
  2. Find the exact model in current documentation. Check the full model name and variant, not just the brand or series. Note any stated firmware, hub, controller, or platform requirements.
  3. Make a feature checklist. Mark setup, start/stop, status, maps, room or area cleaning, and cleaning modes as locally supported, cloud-dependent, unavailable, or not documented. Do not infer one feature from another.
  4. Check behavior without internet access. Look for documentation that distinguishes initial setup from normal use and explains what happens during a cloud outage. If offline behavior is essential and the documentation does not establish it, ask the manufacturer or integration maintainer before relying on the feature.
  5. Recheck after updates. Integrations and Matter feature support can change. Verify current documentation and release notes for the model and platform version you will use.

Matter can help, but it isn’t a feature checklist

Matter is designed for local interoperability, but support for advanced device functions has varied as the standard and integrations have developed. In a January 25, 2024 article, Home Assistant described Matter’s local-by-default approach while noting limits in advanced feature coverage at that time. Treat that as dated context, not a permanent statement about every current Matter device. Check both the vacuum’s documented Matter capabilities and what your smart-home platform actually exposes. Home Assistant’s “The State of Matter” provides that historical context.

Choose based on the offline behavior you actually need

  • If you only need local start and stop, verify those commands and local status reporting for the exact model.
  • If you need room-by-room cleaning, confirm that maps and area selection are available through your intended integration—not only in the vendor app.
  • If the vacuum must work without internet access, establish whether both setup and routine operation can be completed locally, and identify any cloud-dependent recovery path.
  • If you plan to use Matter, check the required controller or hub for your configuration and confirm support for the vacuum features that matter to you.

Community questions often frame the need as a vacuum that works “no internet, no cloud” or through a local Home Assistant setup. Those are useful descriptions of the goal, but they do not establish that any particular model meets it. Treat each behavior as a separate compatibility requirement.
