Robot Vacuum vs. Robot Mop: Which One Do You Need?

A vacuum-only robot suits dry pickup and carpet-heavy homes; a combo can add routine wiping on hard floors. In mixed-floor homes, check how each model protects rugs.

Choose a robot vacuum if your home is mostly carpet or your main need is picking up dry debris. Choose a robot vacuum and mop combo if you want regular damp wiping on hard floors. In a home with both rugs and hard floors, check how the specific robot handles carpet before buying: combo models differ in whether they lift the mop, let you exclude areas, or require you to remove rugs.

What is the difference between a robot vacuum and a robot mop?

A robot vacuum’s main job is dry pickup: it collects dust, crumbs and other loose debris. A robot mop applies a damp pad or another wet-cleaning system to hard floors. Many products combine both jobs, often described as a robot vacuum and mop, a combo or a 2-in-1, but their mopping systems and carpet safeguards vary.

For example, the iRobot Combo i5+ product page says installing its combo bin enables vacuum-and-mop cleaning, and that the bin can be swapped for a dry-vacuum bin. That is a model-specific arrangement, not a standard feature of every combo.

Which type fits your floors?

Mostly carpet or rugs

Start with a vacuum-only robot if dry debris pickup is the priority and carpet covers most of your floors. You avoid adding a water tank and mop pads that may see little use. Water-based mopping is unsuitable for many carpets; eufy Australia cautions that excess moisture can contribute to staining, shrinkage or prolonged dampness, particularly with wool or thick-pile carpet. Follow your carpet’s care instructions and the robot manufacturer’s guidance.

Mostly sealed hard floors

A combo may suit you if you want routine damp wiping as well as dry pickup. iRobot describes the Combo i5 as able to vacuum hard floors and carpet, with optional mopping on hard floors. Its microfiber pad is intended for footprints, dirt and dust; that description is not a guarantee that it will remove every dried spill or suit every floor finish. Check both your flooring maker’s care instructions and the robot’s approved water or cleaning-solution guidance.

A mix of hard floors and carpet

Do not assume a combo will keep rugs dry just because it can mop and vacuum. Check the exact model’s carpet response and app controls before deciding how it will work in your home.

  • Does it detect carpet and lift or retract the wet pad?
  • Can you set no-mop zones or exclude rooms in the app?
  • Does the manufacturer instead tell you to remove rugs or limit mopping to rug-free rooms?

The Combo i5+ operating guidance says to roll up carpets or restrict cleaning to rooms without rugs while mopping with the combo bin installed. By contrast, iRobot’s September 27, 2022 announcement described the j7+ as having a pad that retracts to the top of the robot when it encounters carpet. That describes that model at the time; it is not a category-wide promise.

What extra upkeep does mopping add?

A vacuum-only robot still needs ordinary dustbin and brush care. A combo adds wet-system tasks: expect to refill water and clean or replace mop pads. ECOVACS’ consumer guidance specifically names water refills and pad sanitizing. Some docks automate parts of maintenance, but functions differ by model and may bring additional consumables or complexity. Check the model’s current instructions and replacement-part compatibility before buying.

How to make the choice

  1. Map your floors. Note whether carpet, rugs or hard floors dominate, and identify any floor finishes that need special care.
  2. Choose the routine you actually need. If the main task is collecting dry debris, prioritize vacuuming. If hard floors need regular damp wiping, consider a combo.
  3. For mixed floors, verify rug protection. Confirm pad lifting, carpet detection and area-exclusion controls—or check whether rugs must be removed for mopping.
  4. Account for maintenance. Consider water refills, pad cleaning or replacement, and which tasks the dock handles automatically.
  5. Compare the specific models. Check their instructions, consumables and dock features rather than assuming all products in a category work alike.

Manufacturer guidance can explain how a particular model is intended to work, but it does not establish that all combos clean better or that all of them vacuum worse than vacuum-only robots. Choose by floor plan, cleaning routine and the upkeep you are willing to do.
