Robot Vacuum Not Connecting to Wi-Fi? Troubleshooting Steps

Check the home network and password, confirm your vacuum supports the router’s Wi-Fi band, review app permissions, then restart or reset Wi-Fi using your model’s instructions.

If your robot vacuum will not join Wi-Fi or appears offline in its app, start by checking the home network name and password, then confirm the vacuum supports that network’s band and your phone has the app permissions setup needs. Try the steps below in order, using the instructions for your exact vacuum model—Wi-Fi requirements and reset controls vary by manufacturer.

1. Confirm the home network and password

  • Make sure your phone is connected to the home Wi-Fi network you want the vacuum to use.
  • In the vacuum app, select that home network and carefully re-enter its password. Do not select the temporary Wi-Fi network broadcast by the vacuum during setup; that network is used to connect the phone to the robot during pairing, not as the home network.

Roborock’s Wi-Fi failure and offline guidance and Android setup instructions call out network selection and password checks. Other apps may use a different pairing flow, so follow the prompts for your model.

2. Check whether the vacuum supports your Wi-Fi band

Look up the supported bands in the manual or support page for the exact vacuum model. Do not assume that a limitation documented for one brand applies to every robot vacuum. For Roborock, the manufacturer says, “Our robots currently only support the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi band and do not support 5GHz at present.” See its Wi-Fi band support article.

If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, Roborock advises trying that network first. If setup fails, ask your ISP or router manufacturer whether the bands can be separated or how to connect a 2.4 GHz-only device. Change router settings only after confirming what your vacuum supports.

3. Check the app’s phone permissions

Setup may fail if the app cannot access permissions it needs to discover or communicate with the robot. Roborock advises enabling location permission; for iOS 14 or later, it also instructs users to enable local-network access. Its Android setup guidance also calls for location permission. Requirements can vary with the app and phone operating system, so check the app’s current prompts and your device’s permission settings.

4. Improve signal and check router security

Try setup closer to the router

Move the vacuum near the router for setup if the signal may be weak. Roborock’s S4 Max manual lists poor Wi-Fi reception as a possible cause and recommends choosing a location with good reception.

Verify security settings before changing them

Roborock’s general troubleshooting guidance says WEP is unsupported and advises WPA or WPA2. Security compatibility differs across models and routers; check your vacuum’s manual or ask the manufacturer or router support before changing encryption settings.

Treat other router changes as optional

Roborock also suggests removing special characters from a network name or password and, for users comfortable with router settings, changing DNS to 8.8.8.8. These are brand-specific suggestions, not standard fixes for every vacuum. Do not change DNS or other unfamiliar settings unless your manufacturer recommends it for your model and you understand how to restore the original configuration.

5. Restart equipment, then reset the vacuum’s Wi-Fi

  1. Restart the robot and router, then try adding or reconnecting the vacuum in the app again.
  2. If the connection still fails, use the exact model’s instructions to reset its Wi-Fi configuration, then add the robot as a device again in the app. Roborock’s setup guidance recommends resetting Wi-Fi and adding the robot again when configuration remains abnormal.
  3. Follow the manual for the reset buttons and indicators. For example, the Roborock S7 manual describes holding designated buttons until the “Resetting WiFi” alert and a slowly flashing Wi-Fi indicator; another model may use different controls or an app flow. A Wi-Fi reset is not the same as a factory reset, which may remove settings.

6. Know what to do if it still will not connect

Contact the vacuum manufacturer if the model-specific setup and Wi-Fi reset steps do not work. If its support team points to router settings, band configuration, or the network itself, contact your ISP or router manufacturer. The right next step depends on the exact robot, router, and phone; the cited Roborock instructions do not establish one compatibility rule or reset procedure for all brands.

Can you use the vacuum without Wi-Fi?

Possibly. Roborock says its robots can perform basic cleanups and return to the dock using their buttons without Wi-Fi, while app features such as scheduling require a connection. Check your model’s manual for what its onboard buttons can do offline.
