A 2026 meta-analysis found positive average results for educational robotics, while a separate review found that social robots helped in co-teaching studies but showed no benefit when they replaced a teacher. For most learning goals, the stronger starting point is a well-matched teaching practice, guided by an educator and checked against student progress.
Do educational robots improve student learning?
It depends on what “educational robot” means. Hands-on robotics activities teach learners through programming, design, electronics, or collaboration. A social robot used as a classroom teacher is a different intervention, and a robot supporting a teacher is different again from one expected to replace that teacher.

In a 2026 meta-analysis, Yanqun Lu and Shengnan Geng reported an overall effect of g = .756 for educational robotics, based on 108 effect sizes from 58 studies involving 5,806 participants. The abstract also reports effects of g = .738 for cognitive outcomes and g = .808 for affective outcomes. These are pooled results across the studies included in that review, not a guarantee for every classroom, robot, or learner. Read the meta-analysis in Educational Research Review.

Those results describe the studies in that review; they should not be treated as a direct comparison with the educational-robotics synthesis. Read the social-robots meta-analysis.

The OECD’s 2021 review describes robot teachers as an emerging area of research and proof-of-concept trials. It also distinguishes autonomous social robots from telepresence robots controlled remotely by a teacher, and separates both from robotics activities used to teach subjects such as programming and computational thinking. See the OECD Digital Education Outlook 2021 chapter on social robots as educators.
Seven evidence-informed ways to boost learning
The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) expresses its toolkit estimates as average additional months of progress. They are not predicted gains for an individual pupil, and they come from different evidence syntheses rather than one head-to-head trial. Use them to inform choices—not to rank practices mechanically. The right approach depends on the learning need, the quality of implementation, and whether progress is actually checked.

1. Use targeted one-to-one tuition
Choose individual tuition for a defined learning need, then link it explicitly to what the student is learning in regular lessons. The EEF estimates an average of five additional months of progress. It notes that one-to-one tuition can be costly and that additional tuition tied to classroom learning is more likely to have an impact. The toolkit page was reviewed in July 2021. EEF: One to one tuition.
- Best fit: A learner needs focused help with a specific gap or skill.
- Make it work: Agree on the target with the classroom teacher and connect tutoring activities to current lessons.
- Check progress: Revisit the target skill in ordinary classwork, not only during the tutoring session.
2. Offer small-group tuition
The EEF defines small-group tuition as one teacher, trained teaching assistant, or tutor working with two to five pupils. Its toolkit estimates an average of four additional months of progress; the page was reviewed in July 2021. Groups should be formed around an identified need, with training and close interaction supporting the work. EEF: Small group tuition.

- Best fit: Several pupils share a learning need but still benefit from frequent teacher interaction.
- Make it work: Keep the group small, focus the sessions on the identified need, and coordinate with regular lessons.
- Check progress: Track each learner’s understanding; a group average can conceal individual gaps.
3. Give actionable feedback
Feedback should tell learners how their work relates to the learning goal and what useful step they can take next. The EEF’s current toolkit page reports an average of five additional months of progress, but also says effects vary and that some feedback can worsen outcomes. Increasing the amount of marking alone is not the objective; quality and usefulness matter. EEF: Feedback.
- Best fit: Learners have produced work or attempted a task that reveals what they understand.
- Make it work: Identify the gap between the work and the goal, then give a next step the learner can act on.
- Check progress: Give learners time to use the feedback and see whether the next attempt improves.
4. Teach metacognitive strategies inside subject lessons
Metacognition means thinking about and regulating one’s own learning. Model how to plan, monitor, and evaluate work within the subject being taught—for example, by making the choices involved in tackling a problem visible. The EEF toolkit estimates an average of eight additional months of progress. The EEF cautions that this approach can be difficult to implement well. EEF: Metacognition and self-regulation.

- CHILD SAFETY: Meet US Safety Standard. Safety Test Approved. Non-Toxic.
- Best fit: Learners need to become more deliberate about how they approach and review tasks.
- Make it work: Demonstrate the strategy in a real subject task rather than teaching it as detached advice.
- Check progress: Look for whether learners can explain and apply a strategy when they encounter a task.
5. Use mastery learning with time and support adjusted
Mastery learning keeps the intended learning outcome constant while varying the time and additional support learners receive to reach proficiency. Check understanding and provide feedback before moving on. The EEF estimates an average of five additional months of progress, but rates the security of the evidence as low; its toolkit review was last updated in September 2021. EEF: Mastery learning.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Best fit: A course has clear learning goals and room to respond when learners need more time.
- Make it work: Use checks for understanding to identify who needs further instruction or practice before progressing.
- Check progress: Confirm proficiency against the learning goal rather than assuming that completing a unit means mastering it.
6. Structure collaboration around a shared outcome
Putting pupils together is not enough: give the group a common task and make sure each learner has to explain their thinking. The EEF identifies groups of three to five as a promising structure and estimates an average of five additional months of progress. EEF: Collaborative learning approaches.

- Make it work: Set a shared outcome and build in a reason for every learner to contribute and explain.
- Check progress: Listen to individual explanations and inspect the shared work to see who understands the learning.
7. Use teacher-supported educational robotics when it fits the goal
Robotics is not inherently a failed approach. It can be appropriate when learners need to practise programming, computational thinking, electronics, mechanical design, or collaboration through a sustained hands-on task. The 2026 meta-analysis by Lu and Geng found positive average effects across the educational-robotics studies it included. Treat a robot as a learning tool within a structured, teacher-guided activity—not as a blanket substitute for the educator.
- Best fit: The learning objective genuinely calls for building, programming, testing, or designing.
- Make it work: Give learners a purposeful task, connect it to the intended curriculum, and guide them through the activity.
- Check progress: Assess the target learning—such as the learner’s reasoning or program—not merely whether the robot operates.
How to choose the right approach
Start with the learner’s need, not with a technology purchase or a promise of a particular number of “months.” Each practice has different demands on adult guidance, group size, lesson planning, time, and cost. Make the choice based on what learners need to learn and how you will know whether it is happening.
- Define the learning gap: Be specific about the knowledge or skill learners need to develop.
- Match the format: Consider whether the need calls for individual attention, a small group, better feedback, more deliberate learning strategies, additional time to master material, collaboration, or hands-on robotics.
- Plan adult guidance: Decide who will teach or facilitate, how the work connects to ordinary lessons, and what support staff need.
- Set a progress check: Choose a way to see whether the target skill is improving and make time to act on the result.
- Review the fit: If learners are not progressing, check the task, feedback, and implementation before assuming that more technology or more activity will solve the problem.
The evidence estimates above come from different reviews and contexts. They do not establish a direct ranking between tuition, feedback, metacognition, mastery, collaboration, and robotics. Likewise, the social-robot findings concern particular roles and comparisons within their included studies; they do not settle whether any single classroom robot will help.
