A Boston Dynamics Spot robot was reported patrolling the grounds of Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on November 18, 2024. The U.S. Secret Service confirmed only broad protective-use details; it did not disclose the robot’s exact sensors, software, schedule, or duties.
What was reported at Mar-a-Lago
Futurism reported that the U.S. Secret Service deployed a Boston Dynamics Spot quadruped robot at the resort. The report described it as patrolling the property, but it did not establish a detailed mission plan or identify the equipment mounted on that particular machine.

Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service chief of communications, told Futurism, “Safeguarding the president-elect is a top priority.” The report linked the sighting to the agency’s protective operation around Mar-a-Lago, rather than presenting Spot as a publicly announced, permanent feature of the estate.
What the Secret Service disclosed—and what it did not
An agency spokesperson declined to discuss specific capabilities. As quoted by Futurism, the spokesperson said robotic dogs generally have surveillance technology and advanced sensors that support protective operations. That description is a general explanation, not a confirmation of Spot’s exact configuration in Palm Beach.

The available account does not say:
- which cameras, microphones, thermal sensors or other payloads were installed;
- whether an officer drove the robot remotely, supervised it autonomously, or used both methods;
- which areas or times were covered;
- what software, communications links or security controls were used; or
- how long the deployment lasted or whether it continued after the November 2024 report.
Former Secret Service agent Ron Williams, as quoted by Futurism, said robotic dogs “can cover a lot more area.” That is an observation about the potential value of the form factor, not an independently measured result from the Mar-a-Lago deployment.
What Boston Dynamics says Spot is designed to do
Boston Dynamics describes Spot as a configurable mobile robot for sensing and inspection. The company lists public-safety uses and treats the robot as a platform that can accept different payloads rather than a single fixed surveillance product.

According to Boston Dynamics’ support documentation, Spot can be:
- controlled manually by an operator;
- directed to follow predefined routes automatically; and
- fitted with sensors or other payloads for work such as thermal sensing and site inspection.
Those are documented platform capabilities. They explain why a security agency might evaluate Spot, but they do not prove that every capability was enabled at Mar-a-Lago.

Why a quadruped robot can be useful for protective work

In a presidential-protection setting, those advantages remain possibilities rather than documented outcomes. The public report does not provide a test, comparison with human guards, coverage measurement, or evidence that Spot replaced officers. It only establishes that a Spot was reported at the property and that the agency regarded robotic sensing as relevant to its protective mission.

What readers should take from the sighting
The Mar-a-Lago robot was reported as a Boston Dynamics Spot, an enterprise quadruped platform rather than a consumer robot dog. The Secret Service offered a broad description of surveillance and sensor use while withholding operational specifics. Boston Dynamics’ own materials show that Spot can carry different payloads and operate under manual control or predefined routes, but none of those materials identify the setup used at the Florida estate.
