Coinbase and Kraken are two documented alternatives to Robinhood Crypto for buying Bitcoin, but the right choice depends on how you plan to buy and whether you want the provider to hold your Bitcoin or withdraw it to a wallet you control. Compare the total purchase cost, Bitcoin withdrawal terms, availability where you live, and how account or wallet recovery works—not just the headline trading fee.
Choose first: exchange custody or your own wallet
When Bitcoin stays in a custodial exchange account, the provider controls the private keys. You can generally buy and hold a balance there, but you do not personally control the keys. With self-custody, you control the keys and must protect the backup or recovery material yourself. A lost recovery phrase can mean losing access.

Robinhood Crypto is custodial: Robinhood says it manages customers’ keys and does not provide private keys to its corporate crypto addresses. Its separate product, Robinhood Wallet, is self-custody: the user holds the keys and is responsible for backing them up. Robinhood Crypto support cannot recover a lost Robinhood Wallet secret recovery phrase. These are different products and responsibilities. Robinhood’s transfer and key-control information and its Robinhood Wallet FAQ explain the distinction.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Compare the buying methods and total cost
The price shown for a Bitcoin purchase may include a spread, a trading fee, or both. Payment method, order size, and market conditions can also affect the total. Compare the same order size and payment method in each provider’s live preview, and account for a later withdrawal if you intend to move Bitcoin off the platform.
| Provider and method | What the disclosures say | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Robinhood Crypto exchange-routed orders | Robinhood’s official fee-tier help page lists 0.00%–0.95% for eligible exchange-routed crypto orders, based on eligible trailing 30-day crypto volume. It is not a guaranteed rate for every user or order. Maker/taker availability is rolling out gradually; market orders are taker orders, and routing can affect costs. Robinhood Crypto fee tiers. | Check your account’s applicable tier and the order preview. Do not treat the range as a quote for your trade. |
| Coinbase simple Trade | Coinbase says simple Trade pricing includes a spread; fees may also apply. The resulting price varies. Coinbase pricing and fees disclosures. | Review the complete preview for your order size and payment method. |
| Coinbase Advanced | Coinbase Advanced uses an order book and has no included spread, though trading fees may still apply. Coinbase pricing and fees disclosures. | Check the applicable trading fee and compare the resulting total with simple Trade. |
| Kraken instant or recurring purchase | Kraken’s fee schedule lists 1% for instant and recurring trades, subject to Kraken+ terms and product scope. Kraken fee structures. | Confirm that the stated product and any Kraken+ conditions apply to your account and location. |
| Kraken custom order | Kraken’s fee schedule lists 1.5% for custom orders, subject to Kraken+ terms and product scope. These figures do not describe Kraken Pro spot trading. Kraken fee structures. | Check the product label and fee shown before placing the order; do not compare this figure as if it were a Kraken Pro spot fee. |
These provider disclosures are not an apples-to-apples fee basket, so they do not establish a universally cheapest service. For Kraken’s broader fee categories, see its overview of fees; the applicable charge depends on the product and transaction.

Check Bitcoin withdrawal costs and destination compatibility
Buying Bitcoin on an exchange and withdrawing it are separate steps, with separate costs and risks. Coinbase says it estimates a network fee and that the transaction preview discloses fees. Robinhood says its network-fee estimate appears before confirmation. Check the live transfer screen for the amount, any minimum or provider charge stated there, and the destination address before sending. Coinbase withdrawal information and Robinhood’s transfer details describe their respective processes.

Robinhood lists supported Bitcoin address formats and says it does not support Lightning transactions or Taproot addresses. Its transfer feature is available to eligible customers; limits depend on account-specific factors. Confirm the destination format and network are supported by both the sending service and receiving wallet.

On-chain transfers are final. Robinhood’s help page says: “Crypto transfers are final. Once sent, they can’t be canceled or reversed, even by Robinhood.” Carefully verify the address and network before confirming; Robinhood warns that an incorrect address or incompatible network can result in permanent loss. How the alternatives differ in practice
Coinbase: compare simple Trade with Advanced
Coinbase is worth comparing if you want a simple purchase flow as well as an order-book option. Simple Trade includes a spread in its pricing; Advanced has no included spread, but trading fees may still apply. The withdrawal estimate and disclosed fees are separate from the buying price. Use the live previews for the specific order and withdrawal you plan to make rather than assuming one method is cheaper in every case.

They are not a description of Kraken Pro spot trading. Check the product, location, funding method, and current fee shown for your account before comparing.

Robinhood Crypto: review its transfer and fee conditions
Robinhood remains a useful baseline if you already use it, but its fee-tier range applies to eligible exchange-routed orders and depends on trailing volume. Maker/taker availability is rolling out gradually, and routing can change costs. Its transfer access, limits, and supported Bitcoin formats also matter if you plan to withdraw. The fee-tier disclosure and transfer page state the relevant conditions.

Use this checklist before choosing
- Purchase method: Decide whether you prefer a simple or instant buy, a recurring purchase, or an order-book interface.
- All-in acquisition cost: Compare spread, trading fee, payment method, order size, and the live preview under similar conditions.
- Withdrawal plan: Check the Bitcoin network, supported address format, any stated minimum, and the provider’s fee estimate or charge. If you will withdraw often, include those transfers in your cost comparison.
- Custody: Decide whether the provider holding the keys suits you or whether you are prepared to manage self-custody and recovery materials.
- Availability and account terms: Confirm the service is available in your state or country and check verification, account limits, and any subscription eligibility that affects fees.
- Support and reversibility: Understand what account support can address. A provider may assist with its account or transfer process, but an on-chain transfer cannot be canceled or reversed once sent.
Understand the custody and protection limits
Robinhood says crypto is not FDIC-insured or SIPC-protected and that Robinhood Crypto is not a FINRA or SIPC member. The company also says most coins it holds are in cold storage, with some in hot wallets for operations, and that crime insurance covers a portion of assets. Those are company disclosures, not a guarantee that losses will be reimbursed. Robinhood’s crypto buying and selling information and crypto security disclosure.
For any exchange, read its current custody, account-recovery, and transfer terms before depositing. Moving Bitcoin to self-custody changes who controls the keys; it does not make loss, theft, or a mistaken transfer impossible.
