Pick Roadhog if you want to threaten one enemy with Chain Hook and recover with a self-heal. Pick Mauga if you prefer chaingun pressure, a charge that makes him unstoppable while charging, and Cage Fight. Neither is a universal upgrade: the better choice depends on your preferred fight pattern, the matchup, and the current patch.
How Roadhog and Mauga fight
Blizzard lists both heroes as Tanks with the Bruiser subrole. Their shared role does not make their jobs identical: Roadhog creates a focused threat against a pulled target, while Mauga leans into sustained chaingun pressure and aggressive engagement.

Roadhog: pull, punish, recover
Roadhog’s Scrap Gun fires a short-range spread, with a medium-range secondary projectile that bursts into the primary fire. Chain Hook pulls a targeted enemy toward him, setting up a close-range engagement. Take a Breather heals Roadhog and reduces damage he takes. His Whole Hog ultimate damages and knocks back enemies in front of him, making it a tool for pressure and displacement. Blizzard’s Roadhog hero page describes these abilities.
Mauga: pressure, charge, contain
Mauga’s kit includes Incendiary and Volatile Chainguns, Overrun, Cardiac Overdrive, Berserker, and Cage Fight. Overrun is a forward charge and stomp that launches enemies; Mauga is unstoppable while charging. Berserker grants temporary health when he deals critical damage. Cage Fight deploys a barrier that traps Mauga and enemies inside it. These abilities support a more direct brawling approach. Blizzard’s Mauga hero page lists his abilities.

Choose by the fight you want to create
| What matters | Roadhog | Mauga |
|---|---|---|
| Threat pattern | Chain Hook creates a targeted pull opportunity. | Chainguns apply repeated pressure; Overrun provides a charge-based engage. |
| Sustain | Take a Breather explicitly heals him and reduces damage taken. | Cardiac Overdrive was substantially reworked in June 2026; check its current in-game description rather than relying on older guides. |
| Engage and disengage | His hook can pull an enemy into close range. | Overrun lets him charge while unstoppable, but its cooldown is now longer in 5v5. |
| Fight shaping | Whole Hog damages and knocks back enemies in front of him. | Cage Fight traps Mauga and enemies inside a barrier. |
Pick Roadhog for a focused pick threat
Roadhog is the more natural fit if you enjoy looking for an individual target, pulling that enemy into your range, and using your self-heal to sustain yourself. His ultimate also pushes enemies back, so it shapes space differently from Mauga’s containment tool.
Pick Mauga for a direct brawl
Mauga fits players who want to apply chaingun pressure and start fights with a charge. Cage Fight offers a way to contain enemies rather than knock them away. His tools create a different kind of pressure, not proof that he is stronger in every matchup.

What the latest balance changes mean
In its September 2026 patch notes, Blizzard increased Mauga’s Overrun cooldown from 5 to 6 seconds in 5v5. Blizzard’s developer comment says: “Increasing Overrun’s cooldown lengthens the window where Mauga must commit to a fight before he can disengage, reducing his mobility without directly impacting his ability to engage.” In practical terms, he keeps the charge as an engagement tool, but has to wait longer before using it again to reposition or leave. See Blizzard’s Overwatch patch notes.

Blizzard’s June 2026 notes say Roadhog’s Chain Hook gained the ability to hit teammates and pull Roadhog to a teammate, and Take a Breather began generating nearby damaging poison gas. The same notes describe a major Cardiac Overdrive rework: it lost its previous ally damage-reduction and lifesteal effects and changed in duration, movement, and healing-resource mechanics. Mauga’s stomp damage also began scaling with height. These are dated changes, not a guarantee that every detail remains unchanged in later patches. Check the dated official notes and current in-game descriptions.
Blizzard’s July 2026 notes also changed Mauga’s chaingun spread behavior and included a July 28 bug-fix update. Avoid treating spread or recoil figures from an older guide as current; consult the latest official information or the in-game description. Blizzard’s patch notes provide the dated update history.

The official hero pages and patch notes establish abilities and balance changes, but they do not establish that Roadhog or Mauga is the better pick overall. No comparative pick-rate, win-rate, or performance statistic with a named publisher and reporting year is established here. A balance change to one ability is not, by itself, evidence of a hero’s overall performance.
