Choose Google Preferred Sources to see more relevant stories from selected publishers in Google Search. Subscribe to a newsletter to receive that publisher’s email edition on its own schedule. They serve different purposes, so you can use either—or both.
What Google Preferred Sources does
Preferred Sources lets you tell Google which outlets you want to see more often in relevant Top Stories results. It does not guarantee that a selected outlet will appear in every search: Google says prominence depends on the source having fresh, relevant content for the query. Google also says preferred-source badges appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Google’s publisher announcement describes the feature this way: “When you select your preferred sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.”
Google says Preferred Sources is globally available for Top Stories in all languages where Google Search is available. To select or remove sources, use the control alongside Top stories; Google’s Search Help explains the steps. Publishers whose sites appear in the source-preferences tool can also direct readers to it with a link, image, button, or deeplink, as described in Google’s publisher guidance.

What a publisher’s newsletter does
A newsletter is an email product from a particular publisher that you choose to receive. Its coverage, frequency, and format depend on that publisher. Google News Initiative recommends that publishers make a newsletter’s subject and frequency clear, but those details—and whether it is free or includes exclusive material—vary by publication. Check the signup description and terms before subscribing.

Which should you choose?
Choose Preferred Sources if you want more stories while searching
Select an outlet if you want Google to give its relevant Search coverage more prominence. This is useful when you want to keep discovering stories in Search without signing up for email from each publication.

Choose a newsletter if you want an email edition
Subscribe when you want that publisher to send you coverage directly. Before signing up, check the newsletter’s subject, frequency, and any conditions so its delivery matches what you expect.
Use both if you want both experiences
The choices are compatible: a source preference changes how Google may present relevant Search results, while a newsletter arrives separately in your inbox. Neither guarantees complete coverage or a particular delivery frequency.

What Google’s published figures do—and don’t—show
Google says readers are twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it as a Preferred Source. That is Google’s reported platform finding, not a promise about an individual reader or publisher; see Google’s announcement.
Separately, a Google News Initiative page says newsletter subscribers were 10X more likely to become paid subscribers, citing the Subscriptions Lab. That figure concerns publishers’ subscription conversion, not how satisfied an individual reader will be with a newsletter or whether it is better than Preferred Sources. The two figures measure different outcomes, and neither establishes a head-to-head winner for readers.
