ChannelE2E reported Huntress findings of a 277% year-over-year increase in RMM abuse and RMM involvement in 45% of endpoint-related incidents in early 2026. Those figures signal a serious concern, but the published account does not define the underlying sample or measures, so they should not be treated as universal incident rates.
Why attackers target RMM tools
MSPs use RMM platforms to administer customer systems remotely. That same capability can become an attacker’s foothold if a technician’s account, service account, or remote session is compromised. Because the activity may use legitimate access and familiar tools, it can blend into ordinary administration.

ChannelE2E describes RMM platforms as providing persistent access that can be difficult to distinguish from legitimate activity. This is a dual-use risk: the tools are not inherently malicious, but an attacker who gains access may be able to use the trust already placed in them.

The figures are indicators from Huntress reporting, not a measure of the probability that any particular MSP will be attacked. An IntelliOS index separately summarizes RMM abuse as 24% of all incidents observed in the Huntress 2026 Cyber Threat Report; that is a different measure from the 45% endpoint-related figure, and the two should not be combined or directly compared without the original definitions.

How RMM abuse can connect to identity and email attacks
The concern does not stop at the RMM console. The ChannelE2E account also connects the issue with authenticated sessions, mailbox rules and manipulation, and adversary-in-the-middle activity. That means a successful sign-in is not proof that the subsequent activity is legitimate: attackers may act through an already-authenticated session or change email settings to support further access or concealment.

Multifactor authentication remains an important layer, but it cannot by itself establish that every session or action is safe. The reported concern about threats that bypass traditional MFA makes post-login visibility and response important complements.

Practical controls MSPs can apply
Limit who can administer RMM
- Review which technicians and service accounts have access, and keep permissions limited to operational need.
- Remove dormant accounts and access that is no longer required.
- Review access when staff responsibilities change and when customer environments are added or removed.
Monitor activity in context
- Evaluate RMM actions alongside the account, endpoint, time, session, and expected administrative task.
- Investigate activity that is unusual for a technician or a customer environment instead of treating familiar tooling as automatically trustworthy.
- Extend monitoring beyond initial authentication to session behavior, identity changes, mailbox rules, and other mailbox configuration changes.
Strengthen authentication without relying on it alone
Use the authentication protections supported by your identity provider, and consider a FIDO2 security key for privileged accounts where it is compatible. Check enrollment and account-recovery procedures before adopting keys; a stronger sign-in method does not replace monitoring of what happens after login.

What the report does not establish
The accessible ChannelE2E account attributes the figures to Huntress but does not provide the underlying population, incident definitions, period-comparison method, or full methodology. It does not prescribe a validated configuration, name a security product, or establish that one control will prevent RMM abuse. MSPs should use the findings as a reason to review access and monitoring, not as a product ranking or a universal forecast of risk.
