Then check the device’s power and battery, Wi-Fi coverage, and internet connection. The right recovery steps depend on the exact Ring model; a Ring Alarm Base Station has a separate procedure.
What “offline” means—and what to check first
When a Ring camera or doorbell is offline, you may lose live video, alerts, and event recording. Ring’s support guidance describes those effects, but a failed live view by itself does not establish that the device is offline. Check the status shown in the app and whether other devices on the same home network can reach the internet.

In the Ring app, inspect the device tile for an offline icon. Tap it to see any error code or troubleshooting prompt, then open Device Health for the current status. If you need model-specific instructions, identify the exact model there. Ring’s Fixing offline devices guide outlines the general checks; instructions can differ by product and model.

- Open the Ring app dashboard and select the offline device.
- Open the device’s settings, then select Device Health.
- Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network and follow the prompts.
- Watch for the device’s light pattern or listen for an audio cue as the app guides you through the connection.
If you recently changed your Wi-Fi name or password, router, or internet provider, use this network-change flow rather than treating the issue as a hardware failure. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance covers network-related setup problems.

Check power and battery
A network fix cannot help a device that has lost power. Check that a battery-powered device has charge and powers on. For a plug-in device, verify that it is connected to power; for a hardwired device, check the power source and transformer against the requirements for that exact model. Do not buy a replacement battery or transformer until you have identified the model and established that the existing component is faulty or incompatible.
Check Wi-Fi coverage and internet access
- Test the installed location. If practical, temporarily move the device closer to the router. If it reconnects there but not at its usual location, coverage may be weak where it is installed.
- Restart the network equipment. Disconnect power from the modem and router for about 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait for the network to return.
- Check the internet on the same Wi-Fi. Use a phone connected to that network to confirm it can access the internet. This helps distinguish a Ring-specific issue from a broader connection outage.
- Confirm the Wi-Fi band for the model. Ring devices support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, while only some models also support 5 GHz. Check your model before changing bands; Ring’s product information can help verify compatibility.
- Consider router setup. Ring notes that using more than one router can cause connection problems; ask your internet provider or router manufacturer whether bridge mode is appropriate. Some setup errors concern encryption compatibility rather than signal strength. For example, Ring identifies WPA3 as an issue for certain models in its setup guidance. Confirm your model and its current requirements instead of weakening router security as a blanket fix.
Improve coverage only if the location is the problem
If testing points to weak Wi-Fi at the device’s installed location, consider a coverage change after ruling out power loss, an internet outage, and a changed network configuration. Ring’s guidance mentions a Ring Chime Pro as a way to boost signal and names Chime Pro or a mesh router such as eero for a distant device. Whether an extender or mesh system makes sense depends on the specific Ring model, existing router, coverage at the device, and whether weak Wi-Fi affects one spot or much of the home. No single option is established as best for every home. A coverage upgrade will not fix a depleted battery, lost power, a changed Wi-Fi password, an internet outage, an encryption mismatch, or a failed device.

Power-cycle the device; save factory reset for last
Ring’s in-app reboot option requires the device to be connected to Wi-Fi, so it may not be available while the device is offline. Ring provides physical power-cycle alternatives based on whether a camera or doorbell has removable batteries, an internal battery, plug-in power, or hardwired power. Use the instructions for the exact model in Ring’s reboot guide; do not assume that one model’s power procedure applies to another.
A power cycle is different from a factory reset. Resetting may require setting the device up again, so try the power, network, and model-specific recovery steps first. Follow Ring’s instructions for your model before choosing a factory reset.

If a Ring Alarm Base Station or sensor is offline
Ring Alarm has distinct recovery steps, and its backup behavior is not the same as that of a camera or doorbell. For the Base Station, check its power, see whether other Wi-Fi devices connect, and try the network settings in the Ring app. If possible, connect the Base Station directly to the router with Ethernet. Ring’s Alarm and Z-Wave troubleshooting guide distinguishes Base Station recovery from reconnecting or reconfiguring Z-Wave sensors.
Ring says that when the Base Station switches to battery backup, it operates normally for 15 minutes, then shuts off other features to preserve battery while continuing to monitor sensors and send alarm signals. Ring also says the battery can last up to 24 hours depending on usage. Those figures apply to the Alarm Base Station as described in Ring’s offline Alarm guidance; they are not guarantees of remote app access or figures for cameras and doorbells. Cellular backup requires a compatible Ring subscription.

Alarm Base Station reset caution: Ring’s instructions say to press and release the reset pinhole briefly to reboot the Base Station. Holding the pinhole can factory reset it. Ring advises against attempting a Base Station factory reset without guidance from Ring Customer Support.
When to contact Ring Support
Contact Ring Support if the device remains offline after model-appropriate power and network checks, or if the app shows an error you cannot resolve with its prompts. Have the device model, the Device Health status or error code, recent network changes, and the steps you have tried ready. For an Alarm Base Station, seek support guidance before attempting a factory reset.
