Consumer Reports tested four outdoor turkey fryers, including an oil-less model, but the accessible article does not identify its three picks or report model-by-model results. That means the winners cannot be named or ranked reliably here. The test does offer useful guidance on fryer capacity, what its evaluation covered, and how to prepare and cook a turkey more safely.
What did Consumer Reports test?
In an article published September 25, 2026, Consumer Reports said it tested four popular outdoor fryers, including one that uses no oil and cooks like an air fryer. The testers cooked 5-pound chickens and 18-pound turkeys outdoors near the publication’s labs over two separate days. They compared cooking speed, ease of use, design features, and the taste of the cooked meat; seafood was not tested. Consumer Reports’ article names Char-Broil, Creole Feast, Gas One, and King Kooker among the brands tested, but the accessible extract does not say which models were selected as standouts or how each performed.

Because those model-specific findings are unavailable, it would be misleading to identify any particular fryer as a Consumer Reports winner. The test description also does not establish that the oil-less model was safer or performed better than the oil-based options.

What size turkey fits an outdoor fryer?
Do not assume a fryer’s advertised maximum capacity is a comfortable working size. Consumer Reports found that birds weighing less than 19 pounds were almost too large for models claiming capacity up to 20 pounds. It says turkeys under 16 pounds are better suited to the models discussed. Check the capacity guidance for the exact fryer you are considering; the test’s finding is a reason to leave room, not a guarantee that every model fits the same way.

How should you compare turkey fryers?
Consumer Reports’ evaluation focused on cooking speed, ease of use, design, and taste. Since its model-by-model results are not available in the article extract, use those as questions to investigate rather than as a basis for ranking products:
- Capacity: Does the exact model accommodate your turkey with room to lower it safely?
- Cooking method: Is it an oil-based fryer or an oil-less design, and what preparation and operating steps does its manual require?
- Setup: Can you use it outdoors on a level, stable surface with the clearances its instructions require?
- Included equipment: Does it include the needed pot, burner, thermometer, or lifting equipment, or must you supply them separately?
- Usability: Look for reliable model-specific information about assembly, temperature control, cleanup, and handling a large bird.
These checks help assess fit and practicality; they are not findings about which of the four tested models performed best.

How to set up and use an oil-based fryer
Consumer Reports’ safety guidance for outdoor frying calls for preparation, stable placement, active temperature monitoring, and help from another person. Follow the instructions for your exact fryer as well as the precautions below.

- Set up outdoors at least 10 feet from a home, building, or garage, away from roof eaves and other combustible structures. Keep the propane tank two feet from the burner.
- Place the fryer on level, stable dirt or grass. Consumer Reports advises against a wooden deck because it can catch fire; oil can stain concrete.
- Keep children and pets away, and do not move the fryer while cooking.
- Have heat- and oil-resistant goggles, a long water- and oil-proof apron, long heat-resistant gloves, an ABC fire extinguisher, and a meat thermometer within reach. Consumer Reports reports using grill gloves rated to 932°F; check that any protective equipment is suitable for your specific setup.
- Arrange for another person to help lower or lift the turkey and respond if an emergency occurs.
Thaw and dry the turkey completely
Make sure the bird is fully thawed and dry, including the cavity, before it goes into hot oil. Even small amounts of ice or water can trigger a violent boil-over. Do not stuff a turkey intended for frying.

Monitor oil temperature and lower the bird slowly
Consumer Reports advises using a calibrated thermometer to bring oil to 350°F before lowering the turkey slowly. Monitor the oil during cooking and keep it between 300°F and 360°F. Smoking can indicate that oil is too hot. The article says most sources recommend three to four minutes per pound, but time is only a guide: use a meat thermometer to confirm doneness.
Check the turkey’s internal temperature
Measure the thickest part of the breast, the inner wing, and the inner thigh. Each should reach at least 165°F. If any area is below that temperature, return the bird to the fryer and check it again.

What should you do with fryer oil afterward?
Let the oil cool completely before handling it. Consumer Reports says it can be strained and stored for reuse; deputy editor and classically trained chef Paul Hope reports that chefs typically reuse frying oil two to four times. For disposal, transfer cooled oil to a watertight container. Never pour it into a drain, including a toilet or bathtub, because it can damage plumbing.
