Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst check whether you mean a plug-in Ring Chime or the wired chime inside your home: they are different devices with different fixes. For a plug-in Chime, check power and its generation-specific light, then use the Ring app to distinguish a silent-but-online device from a Wi-Fi or setup problem. If the doorbell does not ring a wired in-home chime, check compatibility and chime settings before considering wiring.
Identify which chime is failing
A plug-in Ring Chime or Chime Pro provides audible alerts for compatible Ring devices. A wired in-home chime is part of the home’s doorbell wiring; troubleshooting it is not the same as troubleshooting a plug-in Chime.

- Plug-in Chime: It has its own power connection, light, and device settings in the Ring app.
- Wired in-home chime: It is the mechanical or digital chime connected to a doorbell circuit. Some Ring doorbell models do not support one.
Generation matters, too: light patterns differ across Chime models. Chime (3rd Gen) and Chime Plus setup can use Bluetooth. Ring’s Chime setup guide covers supported models and setup details.

If the Ring app shows the Chime online, check its settings before assuming it has failed. Open the Chime’s device settings in the Ring app and review the displayed alert assignments, volume, and Do Not Disturb controls. Confirm that the doorbell or alerts you expect are assigned to that Chime. Ring says the app allows users to set a custom Chime volume in its Chime factsheet.
#1 Best Overall
- Hear when someone's there — Receive notifications when motion is detected by your cameras or someone rings your doorbell.
- Real-time alerts, clear as a bell — With an upgraded speaker, get notified throughout your home with louder, clearer alerts.
- Set up in a snap — Simply plug Chime (3rd Gen) into a standard wall outlet for easy setup.
- Sleek, elegant design — Curved edges and slim profile create a modern look that fits your space.
- Customizable sound profiles — Personalize tones, volume, and snooze settings.
If power, alert assignment, volume, and Do Not Disturb settings are correct but the device remains silent, follow the model-specific guidance in Ring’s support materials. Avoid applying a reset procedure from another generation: Ring’s public setup guidance does not establish one universal reset sequence for every Chime model.
If the Chime is offline
In the Ring app, open the Chime’s Device Health section. Under Network, choose Reconnect or Change Network, then follow the prompts. Ring’s offline-device guide recommends checking power and network conditions as part of recovery.

- Personalized tones. Precision audio alerts. — Set a custom tone for each of your Ring devices so you know exactly which one was triggered the moment your Chime Plus sounds.
- Enhanced audio for true sound — Hear every alert no matter where you are with improved audio for crisp clarity and loudness.
- A guiding light that’s easy on the eyes — Illuminate hallways, rooms, and more with the built-in night-light.
- Make sure the Chime is plugged in and receiving power.
- Check that your home internet is working and that the phone used for setup can connect to the selected Wi-Fi network.
- If the signal is weak, try placing the Chime closer to the router. Where the model and network support it, try a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Match the light pattern to the Chime’s generation rather than treating every red or blue light as the same status.
Chime Pro can extend Wi-Fi for selected Ring devices, but it is a connectivity option—not a guaranteed fix for a Chime that is silent for another reason.
If Chime setup will not complete
- Plug in the Chime and enter setup mode. Follow the Ring app’s setup flow. If the light is not flashing, Ring’s setup guide says to press and hold the side button for five seconds.
- Choose the correct Wi-Fi network. Have the password ready and verify it carefully. For Chime (3rd Gen) and Chime Plus, follow the app’s Bluetooth setup prompts where shown.
- Check Wi-Fi discovery and signal. Move closer to the router if necessary, and confirm that the phone itself can connect to the network.
- Check network details and router settings. A wrong password, unsupported band for the specific model, network name containing special characters, weak signal, or router configuration can prevent setup. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guide lists possible connection barriers; the cause is not necessarily the same for every device.
If setup still fails, use the prompt shown in the Ring app and the instructions for your model. Do not assume that a failed connection proves the Chime is defective.

Read the light for the correct generation
Use Ring’s Chime light-pattern guide and match your model before interpreting the indicator. Examples in Ring’s guide include:
| Generation | Light pattern | Meaning described by Ring |
|---|---|---|
| First-generation Chime or Chime Pro | Solid blue ring | Powered on |
| First-generation Chime or Chime Pro | Blue ring flashes one second on, one second off | Setup failed because home Wi-Fi could not be detected |
| Second-generation Chime | Blue circle flashes while connecting | Connecting |
| Second-generation Chime | Red and green alternate | Incorrect Wi-Fi password |
| Second-generation Chime | Flashing red circle | No internet |
| Second-generation Chime | Solid red | Failed Wi-Fi connection |
| Second-generation Chime | Repeated short/long red sequence | Overheat condition |
These examples are not interchangeable between generations. If your indicator does not match the examples for your model, consult Ring’s guide rather than inferring a fault from color alone.

If a Ring doorbell does not ring the wired in-home chime
Check that the doorbell model supports an in-home chime, then confirm that the Ring app’s chime type matches the actual mechanical or digital unit, or is set to none where appropriate. Also check that the in-home chime control is enabled when applicable. Ring’s in-home chime guide covers compatibility, settings, and wiring checks.
Do not open or rewire the chime as a routine first step. Ring warns of electrical hazards and advises disconnecting circuit power before installation work. If you are unsure about the wiring or compatibility, have a qualified electrician assess it.
