Start with the least disruptive fix: finish Windows Update and restart. Then verify your GPU and Windows version before reinstalling the matching official AMD package. Use a clean reinstall only if the mismatch persists.
Identify what kind of driver clash you have
The message “AMD Software is not compatible with the currently installed graphics driver” describes a mismatch, but it does not by itself identify the cause. Check the exact installer error number if one appears; AMD’s installation guidance distinguishes update-state errors from a possible driver-version rollback or third-party driver detection.

- Error 202: AMD says Windows Update is in progress, so setup cannot continue.
- Error 206: A Windows install or update is pending; AMD directs you to restart Windows before running setup again.
- Error 205: Installation completed, but Windows Update may have reverted the driver version.
- Error 183: The installer detected third-party graphics drivers. That can indicate a mixed-vendor or leftover-driver condition; identify the graphics hardware and follow AMD’s specific Error 183 guidance rather than removing drivers indiscriminately.
These are AMD’s descriptions, not a complete diagnosis of every mismatch. Unsupported hardware or operating systems, damaged installer files, download problems, low disk space, or a graphics-device issue can also stop installation. Use the error-specific guidance when setup reports another code. If the problem remains unclear, note the GPU model, Windows version and build, AMD Software and driver versions, exact error, and Device Manager status.

Try this first when AMD setup reports Error 202 or 206, or when Windows is visibly installing updates. It does not remove the existing graphics driver.

AMD’s Error 206 message is direct: “The AMD Software Installer cannot proceed due to a pending Windows install or update. Please restart Windows before running AMD Software Installer.”
Fix 2: Install the package for your exact Radeon GPU and Windows version
If the mismatch remains after Windows Update finishes, verify compatibility before downloading. Use AMD’s product support page to locate the package for the exact GPU, or use AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool. A general Windows requirement does not establish support for every Radeon model: check the product page and release notes for your hardware and operating system.
AMD’s installation article lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later, as supported operating-system versions; AMD notes that requirements may change. Confirm current requirements on the product-specific page before proceeding. The same article recommends closing open apps and temporarily disabling antivirus, firewall, remote-access, and streaming services during setup to avoid potential conflicts. Treat this as a temporary installation precaution, not a general security setting.

Choose a driver package
AMD’s Auto-Detect guide distinguishes two release types. Recommended is the conservative choice for troubleshooting; Optional is newer and includes the latest features and bug fixes. AMD describes Recommended as stability-focused and Microsoft certified. Optional is not automatically the better choice for every system.
| Package type | AMD’s description | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended | Stability focused and Microsoft certified | A conservative reinstall while resolving a mismatch |
| Optional | Most current, with the latest features and bug fixes | When you specifically need a newer feature or fix |
Run setup and select the installation type
AMD’s installer may offer Default, Minimal, or Driver Only. These are installation choices, not separate fixes for a driver clash:
- Default: AMD Software features and controls.
- Minimal: Basic controls without advanced performance tuning or recording/capturing.
- Driver Only: No AMD Software user interface.
Complete setup, restart if prompted, and check whether AMD Software now recognizes the installed driver. If Error 205 appears, AMD says Windows Update may have reverted the driver after installation. Check the installed version, allow Windows Update to finish, and reinstall the package that matches the GPU and Windows version.

Fix 3: Clean reinstall if the mismatch persists
A clean reinstall is more disruptive than finishing updates or installing the matching package. Use it when the mismatch remains and you need to remove previous AMD graphics software or driver components. AMD offers two approaches: Factory Reset inside the installer, or the separate AMD Cleanup Utility.
Option A: Factory Reset in AMD setup
When available, select Factory Reset in the AMD installer. AMD says it removes all prior versions of the AMD Software Package, temporarily pauses Windows Updates, restarts the system, and resumes installation after reboot. The previous driver cannot be rolled back afterward. The installer may offer “Keep user settings”; that can preserve settings, but it does not make the previous driver recoverable.
Option B: AMD Cleanup Utility, then install the package
- First allow Windows Update to finish. AMD Cleanup Utility terminates if Windows Update is running.
- Download and run the AMD Cleanup Utility. AMD recommends Windows Safe Mode for best results.
- Let cleanup complete, then reboot as required for changes to take effect. AMD estimates the process may take 15–20 minutes depending on how much needs removal; the display may briefly flicker or go blank.
- Install the package for the exact Radeon GPU and Windows version, then restart if prompted.
The utility removes previously installed AMD graphics and audio drivers/software in preparation for new graphics software and driver installation. AMD says it does not remove or modify AMD chipset drivers on AMD-powered systems. It also creates a System Restore Point before cleanup so you can recover if an issue occurs.

When a driver clash is not resolved by these steps
If the installer reports an error other than 202, 205, 206, or 183, use AMD’s installation error guidance to identify the specific issue. Do not infer from the mismatch message alone that the graphics driver is the only cause.
For a Windows Update problem, Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the hardware manufacturer’s driver instructions and restarting when required. Microsoft also documents driver and clean-boot troubleshooting for update problems attributed to incompatible drivers. A clean boot can help identify software conflicts, but it does not prove that AMD’s graphics driver caused the problem.
