The studio also says saves can move between versions 1.6 and 1.7 in either direction. Those are developer-reported results, not guarantees for every PC, save, or mod.
What changes in RimWorld 1.7?
Ludeon announced the engine transition on October 12, 2026. Rather than continue using Unity, RimWorld 1.7 runs on Waylith, an engine Ludeon says it built in-house. The studio says the game looks and plays the same after the change; the update’s headline differences are under the hood, especially performance and modding capabilities.

The announcement does not describe Waylith’s architecture or explain how it maintains compatibility with existing mods. It establishes what Ludeon says it has achieved, but not the technical mechanism behind it.

How much faster does Ludeon say it is?
Ludeon reports a 2–4x performance improvement in its tests. It also cites a late-game colony that performed 2.2x better and a 1,500-mod pack whose load time fell from 14 minutes to 6 minutes. The studio cautions that results vary depending on the PC and mods.

These numbers should be read as Ludeon’s test results, not a promise that every player will see the same gains. The announcement excerpt does not specify the benchmark hardware or workload details, and no independent benchmark validating the figures is established here. Your results may differ substantially with your system, colony, and mod list.
Will existing mods and saves work?
Mods
Ludeon says the vast majority of mods work on 1.7 without changes from their authors. That is encouraging, but it is not a guarantee that every mod or combination of mods will work. A yellow warning may indicate only that a mod’s listed version has not been updated; by itself, Ludeon says, it does not demonstrate incompatibility.

For a modded colony, check the mod’s status and back up important saves before switching branches. If a particular mod behaves incorrectly, treat that as a compatibility issue to investigate rather than assuming the warning is harmless or that the entire mod ecosystem is broken.
Saves
Ludeon says 1.6 saves can be loaded in 1.7 and 1.7 saves can be used after returning to 1.6. This is the developer’s stated cross-version support, not a substitute for keeping a separate backup before opening a valued colony on a beta branch.

How to try the 1.7 beta on Steam
At the October 12, 2026 announcement, update 1.7 was available as an unstable Steam beta while the main branch remained on 1.6. Branch status can change, so check the current Steam settings before switching.

Open your Steam Library and right-click RimWorld.

Select Properties, then open the Betas section.

Select the unstable 1.7 beta branch if it is still offered. Steam will update the game to that branch.

To return to the main version, revisit the Betas setting and choose the default option. Keep backups of important saves before changing versions.

What Waylith could mean for modders
Ludeon says Waylith allows modders to use newer C# language features and makes it easier to build complex mods without harming performance. The studio also says larger visual changes and custom effects should be more accessible. More than two dozen modders helped test the engine and provide feedback, according to Ludeon.

These are stated capabilities and goals; the announcement does not provide technical examples or independently measured mod-performance results. The practical benefit will depend on what mod authors build and how their work performs in real play.
Will 1.7 run on an older PC?
Ludeon cautioned that 1.7 may not run on PCs more than 10 years old. This is a warning, not a formal minimum-specification list; the announcement does not identify a specific processor, graphics card, memory amount, or operating-system requirement. It also does not establish that players need to buy new hardware. Check the current official requirements and beta notes before upgrading an older system.
Is another Waylith game coming?
Ludeon said it is working on something new and that RimWorld is not the only game built on Waylith. It did not reveal the other game’s title, genre, or release date, so no more specific conclusion is supported.
