Right-Click Menu: What It Is and How to Open One

A right-click menu, or context menu, offers actions related to the item or area you are using. It can be opened in several ways, depending on your device.

A right-click menu is more generally called a context menu: a menu of actions related to the item, content, or area you are interacting with. It keeps relevant commands out of the main interface until you ask for them. A right mouse click is common, but it is not the only way to open one.

What does “right-click menu” mean?

The name describes a familiar mouse gesture, while context menu describes what the menu does. Its commands depend on the current context—for example, the selected item or the part of an interface you are using. Apple defines it as access to functionality directly related to an item, without cluttering the interface: Apple’s context menu guidance.

These menus are usually hidden until requested. That keeps the screen less crowded, but it can also make available actions less obvious.

How can you open a context menu?

  • Mouse: Use the secondary, often right-hand, mouse button. Chrome describes this alternate click as a common way to show a context menu: Chrome for Developers’ context menu guide.
  • Keyboard: On supported keyboards, press the context menu key. In a browser, the menu is positioned near the focused element; exact positioning can depend on the type of element. MDN’s documentation for the contextmenu event describes this behavior.
  • Apple devices: Depending on the device and setup, options include Control-click, secondary click on a supported trackpad, or touch-and-hold. These methods are not available on every Apple device: Apple’s guidance.

There is no single gesture that works across all computers and touch devices. Check the device’s input settings or help if the expected method does not work.

What happens when you right-click a web page?

In a browser, an attempt to open a context menu typically triggers the JavaScript contextmenu event. A website can listen for that event and call preventDefault() to suppress the browser’s usual menu. Behavior can vary: MDN notes that Firefox shows the menu for Shift-right-click without firing the event. So a page’s attempt to hide the menu is not foolproof. MDN documents the event and its browser-specific behavior.

Why do context menus show different commands?

The menu is meant to match what you clicked or focused, so commands can change with the selected item, content, or interface area. A menu for a file, for example, need not offer the same actions as one opened over a text field. Designers can keep the main interface uncluttered by making relevant actions available on demand.

Because users may not know a menu exists, Apple recommends showing actions that are relevant to the current view or content and likely to be useful. It also advises limiting deep submenu hierarchies, which are harder to navigate. Apple’s context menu guidance.
