You can rewrite selected text on a Mac without switching apps: use Apple Writing Tools from the selection’s contextual menu, or use Raycast Quick Fix when you want a configurable hotkey to run an AI command in the active app. For automated Apple writing actions, Writing Tools are also available in Shortcuts on macOS 26.
Choose the workflow that fits how you write
| What you want | Start here | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rewrite selected text with Apple’s built-in tools | Apple Writing Tools | Opens Rewrite, tone choices, and a field for describing a change; the result appears inline. Availability depends on macOS and Apple Intelligence support. Apple Support |
| Automate Apple writing actions | Shortcuts with Writing Tools on macOS 26 | Apple documents proofread, rewrite, and summarize actions. This does not establish a universal default shortcut for inline replacement. Apple’s WWDC25 session |
| Trigger a customizable AI command by hotkey in the active app | Raycast Quick Fix | Runs an AI command from a hotkey and can target selected text or the entire focused field. It requires Accessibility permission. Raycast Manual |
Use Apple Writing Tools to rewrite selected text
- Select the text you want to change.
- Control-click the selection and choose Show Writing Tools. In some apps, including Notes and Mail, a Writing Tools button may appear near the selection or in the toolbar.
- Choose Rewrite, Friendly, Professional, or Concise. To specify a different goal, choose Describe your change and enter the instruction.
Apple says the rewritten version appears inline. The guide also describes retrying and switching between the original and updated text. For the latest available features, Apple says to use a current macOS version with Apple Intelligence turned on; feature availability also depends on Apple Intelligence support for your Mac and language. See Apple’s Mac guide to Writing Tools for current availability details.

Put Apple writing actions in a Shortcut on macOS 26
Apple’s WWDC25 session says Writing Tools are available as Shortcuts in macOS 26, including actions to proofread, rewrite, and summarize. That lets you incorporate those actions into a Shortcuts workflow and, after a rewrite, make a follow-up request such as asking for a warmer or more conversational version. The session documents Shortcuts actions; it does not establish one default global keyboard shortcut that replaces selected text inline. See Apple’s WWDC25 Writing Tools session.

Set up Raycast Quick Fix for a hotkey workflow
Raycast Quick Fix runs its Fix Spelling and Grammar AI Command in the focused app. Raycast documents a default trigger of double-pressing the right Shift key; its keyboard manual also describes assigning custom global hotkeys to commands. Quick Fix is therefore a better fit when you want a repeatable, configurable trigger rather than Apple’s contextual-menu flow.
#1 Best Overall
- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE — Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad connects wirelessly to your Mac, iPad, or iPhone via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH MAC, IPAD, OR IPHONE — It pairs quickly with your device so you can get to work right away.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
- Install and open Raycast, then use its AI Commands settings to configure the Fix Spelling and Grammar command and Quick Fix.
- Keep the selected-text target, which Raycast documents as the default, or configure Quick Fix to target the entire focused field.
- When macOS prompts on first use, grant Raycast Accessibility permission. Raycast says it needs this to read and replace text in the active app.
- In a supported app, select text if you want to change only that passage, then invoke Quick Fix using the configured hotkey. Check the result in the app before continuing.
Raycast documents an experimental Preserve Formatting option for supported apps such as Slack and Notion. Treat it as experimental rather than expecting formatting preservation in every app. Its documented features and permissions are described in the Raycast AI Commands manual; general hotkey configuration is covered in the Raycast keyboard shortcuts manual.

What to expect—and what is not established
- Apple Writing Tools is the straightforward starting point for selection-based rewriting without leaving the app: choose the tool from the contextual menu or an available app control.
- Raycast Quick Fix is the documented option when a hotkey and a configurable AI command matter most; its active-app replacement depends on Accessibility permission and app support.
- Shortcuts adds Apple Writing Tools actions on macOS 26, but the cited Apple session does not document a universal default shortcut for direct inline replacement.
- The documentation establishes features, not compatibility with every app, comparative speed, or measured productivity gains. Neither workflow should be assumed to work identically everywhere.
