For holes, first check whether the area was missed during capture; for noisy meshes, avoid repeatedly scanning the same patch. Markers, exposure changes, surface treatment, reshooting, and calibration each address different causes, so choose the fix that matches the symptom.
Recover tracking without making the scan worse
- Stop moving. Continuing to sweep while tracking is lost can add bad frames. Inspect the recent capture and undo or remove a visibly mis-scanned frame if the software and workflow allow it.
- Return to a recognizable area. Aim at a previously captured region with distinct features, then hold the scanner steady for several seconds or until tracking returns.
- Resume slowly. Keep the scanner within the acceptable working-distance range shown by the software. Moving too close, too far, or too quickly can disrupt capture.
- Check exposure and the surface. Manual exposure settings or a dark surface can make tracking harder. Try auto exposure if the selected scan mode offers it, and adjust lighting or surface treatment when appropriate.
These steps reflect Revopoint’s Revo Scan 5 manual and its scanning tips. Exact controls can vary by scanner, mode, and software version.

When to use tracking markers
Feature tracking relies on recognizable surface detail. Large smooth areas and repeated patterns may not give the scanner enough unique visual information to maintain its position. Marker tracking adds distinct reference points for these surfaces; it is not necessary for every scan, especially when the object already has plenty of irregular detail.
Place markers irregularly rather than in a uniform repeating pattern. Revopoint’s general scanning guide advises planning for six or more markers in view per frame. Its separate marker-placement guidance recommends 8–15 markers in a single frame for the best tracking experience. These are figures from two different pieces of official guidance, not a single universal minimum. See Revopoint’s general scanning guide and marker-placement guidance.

Five modes for comprehensive indoor and outdoor coverage.
Scanning dark, shiny, transparent, or metallic objects
Dark surfaces can absorb projected light; transparent surfaces can transmit it; and metallic or shiny finishes can reflect it unpredictably. Any of these properties may make capture or tracking difficult. Start with exposure and lighting adjustments where the scan mode permits them. If those are not enough, Revopoint recommends lightly and evenly matting challenging surfaces with scanning spray or fine powder.
Surface treatment is optional, not a universal requirement. Confirm that it is safe for the object and can be removed, and test an inconspicuous area first. Follow the guidance for your scanner and material; Revopoint discusses exposure and difficult surfaces in its Revo Scan 5 manual and scanning tips.

Reduce rough or noisy mesh areas
Once a region has been captured, keep moving instead of repeatedly sweeping over it. Revopoint’s Revo Scan 5 manual warns: “Repeated scanning of the same area will create more noise in the 3D model and reduce its quality.” If the mesh still looks rough or grainy, check whether the scanner stayed at a suitable working distance, whether movement was too fast, and whether exposure or lighting was poor. Revopoint also recommends calibration for a rough or grainy result; calibration guidance depends on the scanner model and symptom.

Diagnose and fix holes in a mesh
A hole may mean the scanner never captured that part of the object, or it may be a real opening in the object. Check the object itself and the scan from more than one view before editing: filling a real opening would change the geometry.
If the surface was missed during capture
Rescan the area from another angle where practical. Highly angled surfaces can be missed during a standard horizontal pass. Revopoint’s RANGE tutorial recommends adding a vertical pass and merging it with the first scan to improve coverage in that case. Consult the RANGE tutorial for that workflow.

If only small holes remain
Mesh editing may be able to fill small gaps after capture. Revopoint’s RANGE tutorial describes post-editing for holes, and its support index lists a dedicated “How do I fill holes?” article. The available controls and their limits depend on the current software and workflow; filling cannot be assumed to reconstruct arbitrary missing geometry accurately. See the RANGE tutorial and Revopoint support index.

When calibration is appropriate
Calibration is not the first fix for every tracking failure or mesh defect. Revopoint’s support article dated September 8, 2026, says brand-new scanners normally do not need calibration after leaving the factory. It recommends calibration when a model looks rough or grainy, Marker Mode cannot recognize markers, or the user wants the best possible accuracy. Follow the procedure for the specific scanner and current software rather than applying another product line’s schedule.
