Start with cards you own, compare singles with a ready-to-play preconstructed deck, and verify the finished list is legal: exactly 100 cards including your commander, within its color identity, and singleton except where the rules allow multiples.
Choose a commander and set your budget first
Pick a legendary creature whose colors and play pattern you genuinely enjoy. Your commander is both a deckbuilding anchor and the card you can reliably build around; Wizards’ introduction to Commander encourages experimentation and choosing cards for the kind of game you want to play, rather than simply chasing the strongest options.

Set your total ceiling before shopping. Include shipping and taxes in the amount you can actually spend, and leave room for the full deck rather than spending most of the budget on a few splashy cards. There is no universally correct dollar cap: choose one that fits your circumstances, then use it to guide every card choice.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWrite down what the deck is trying to do
Describe the plan in a sentence: for example, what your commander rewards, what your deck will do repeatedly, and what a successful game looks like. Use that description to judge every candidate card. A popular card is not automatically useful if it does not support your plan, and an inexpensive card can be a good choice when it advances the deck reliably.

- GET ALL 4 MARVEL SUPER HEROES-THEMED COMMANDER DECKS—Avengers Assemble, Wakanda Forever, The Fantastic Four, and Doom Prevails
- ASSEMBLE EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES & VILLAINS—The Marvel Universe has arrived in full force! Build your dream super teams of Heroes and Villains, then suit them up with iconic gear and unleash their earthshaking abilities
- 30 NEW COMMANDER CARDS—Each ready-to-play deck includes 30 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering

The Avengers Assemble, Wakanda Forever, and Doom Prevails decks each contain 1 foil Borderless card. The Fantastic Four deck contains 4 foil Borderless cards, 1 for each member of the team!
- EPIC MULTIPLAYER BATTLES—Magic’s most popular multiplayer play format, Commander is an action-packed, free-for-all battle full of strategic plays and social intrigue (best with 3–5 players)
Include cards that help the deck function when the commander is unavailable. Commander games are social, and Wizards notes that the format is designed to promote social games. Talk with your regular group about expected power and how much interaction players want; a deck that fits the table is more useful than one tuned in isolation. See Wizards’ Commander format overview for the format’s broader context.
Find affordable candidates, then check each card
Begin with cards already in your collection. For gaps, use commander-specific deckbuilding pages and price filters to find possible additions. EDHREC’s guide describes commander-page filters and role tags, while a 2026 budget deckbuilding guide discusses price-filtered discovery. Treat these tools as ways to surface candidates, not as proof that a recommendation fits your deck or remains inexpensive.

Before adding a card, check its color identity, its job in your plan, and the exact printing you intend to buy. Prices and availability can differ between printings and change over time, so confirm the current listing rather than relying on an old deck page or price mention. If a cheaper card does the job adequately, it may be a better fit for a strict budget than a more popular upgrade.

Building from your collection and buying singles gives you control over the commander and individual choices. A preconstructed deck provides a ready-to-play list and can be modified later. Wizards’ Foundations Commander decklists describe 100-card products that players can reconfigure with cards they already own.

- RETURN TO THE LAND OF LIGHT AND SHADOW—Lorwyn returns, not as it once was, but a world split in two. Explore this dual-aspect plane filled with enchanting creatures and embrace the powers of order and chaos.
- READY-TO-PLAY COMMANDER DECK—Pick up and play Magic’s most popular multiplayer format
- CONTENTS—100-card Blight Curse deck with 12 new cards (including 2 foil Mythics), deck box, 10 double-sided token cards, strategy insert, reference card
Neither route is automatically cheaper. Compare the current product contents and price with your chosen theme, the cards you already have, the amount of modification needed, and any shipping or tax. If you want one exact commander and have a useful collection, singles may suit you better; if you want a complete starting list, a precon may save the effort of sourcing every card separately. Check the product and price at the time you buy.
Buying boosters is a poor default when you need specific cards: random packs do not guarantee the cards your list requires. Wizards distinguishes Commander decks from Play Boosters, which are intended for draft or opening for fun, in its product guide.

Check the 100-card list for Commander legality
Before buying or playing, check the completed deck against the format’s core construction rules. Wizards’ Commander rules page and format overview provide the official reference.
- Count exactly 100 cards. The commander is included in the total.
- Stay within color identity. A card’s identity includes its colors and mana symbols in its rules text. Do not include cards outside the commander’s identity.
- Apply singleton. Use no more than one card with a given name, except for basic lands and cards whose rules specifically permit multiples.
- Check table fit. Discuss expectations and desired interactivity with your group before the game.
These checks do not tell you whether every card is strategically strong, but they catch fundamental construction problems before you spend money or sit down to play.
