What Revolut has promised to cover
Béatrice Cossa-Dumurgier, Revolut’s CEO for Western Europe, told BFM TV: “If they ever have to change their ID documents, we’re taking care of the associated costs”. Reuters reported the statement on October 7, 2026. It does not establish that every affected customer needs to replace a document or that replacement is automatically required.

Reuters said Cossa-Dumurgier confirmed Revolut had assisted affected customers, but she did not say whether any customer had already changed documents or how much replacement might cost. The report does not explain how to submit a claim, which documents qualify, whether costs already incurred are covered, or whether there are limits or deadlines. Affected customers should follow any direct instructions from Revolut and their document-issuing authority rather than assume a replacement is necessary.
How many customers were affected?
Reuters reported that 680 Revolut customers were affected, including 55 in France. Separately, Italian Undersecretary Wanda Ferro said eight affected customers were in Italy, as reported by Rai News. These are country-specific figures from different reports, not a complete geographic breakdown; they should not be added together to infer how many customers were affected elsewhere.

What happened in the incident?
Reuters reported that attackers took control of an Italian government agency email address and used it to send requests that led Revolut to disclose customer data. The address was associated with the Reggio Calabria police system. Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, told lawmakers on September 30 that the address had never been used before.
The Italian Chamber of Deputies record describes false requests apparently sent from an account associated with the Reggio Calabria Prefecture. It also records that the Postal Police was investigating suspected unauthorised access to a computer system and computer fraud. Those are allegations and an account of an ongoing investigation, not a final technical finding about how the email account was compromised.

ANSA reported that the Reggio Calabria prosecutor had opened an investigation. At that point, investigators had not established whether a computer at the Prefecture or the Interior Ministry had been compromised. The reports do not provide an individual inventory of the information disclosed for each customer.
Was Revolut itself hacked?
Not according to Revolut’s account as reported by ANSA on September 16, 2026. The company said its own systems and customer funds were unaffected, and that it blocked the email address and notified relevant authorities, law enforcement, data-protection bodies and financial regulators after detecting the incident. These are company statements, not an independent forensic conclusion.

Rai News reported that Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency had confirmed 680 affected Revolut customers. Its incident response team had analysed a sample fraudulent email and confirmed compromise of an address associated with the Reggio Calabria Prefecture. This supports the reported link to the government-associated account, but does not settle which government system or computer was compromised.

Cossa-Dumurgier said Revolut would not pay ransoms. Reuters also reported that Revolut had previously said it had received no ransom demand; the reporting does not say that the company paid one.
