The practical choice is the exact filter model with a verified PFAS-reduction claim for the compounds in your water, plus maintenance and operating costs you can sustain. Carbon generally performs better against longer-chain PFOA and PFOS than shorter-chain PFAS; RO is another treatment option, but its performance must also be checked model by model.
How the two filter types remove PFAS
Activated carbon: adsorption
Granular activated carbon (GAC) captures contaminants as water passes through: PFAS molecules attach to the carbon’s porous surface. Performance depends on the carbon type, depth of the carbon bed, water flow, temperature, the PFAS compounds present, and other material in the water. EPA says GAC generally works better for longer-chain PFOA and PFOS than for shorter-chain PFBS and PFBA. That does not establish how a particular cartridge will perform; use its verified product claim and follow its replacement schedule. EPA explains the treatment factors and compound differences.

Reverse osmosis: membrane separation
RO pushes water through a semipermeable membrane. Treated water, called permeate, passes through; a reject stream carries away water and concentrated contaminants. EPA identifies point-of-use RO as a PFAS treatment option, but “RO” alone is not proof that a system has a tested PFAS-reduction claim. Verify the exact model’s listing and claim. Under-sink RO systems typically involve more installation and upkeep than a simple cartridge filter, including pre- and post-filters and a membrane. EPA WaterSense describes point-of-use RO operation and water efficiency.

There is no universal winner. EPA reports that studied point-of-use GAC and RO systems can greatly reduce PFAS, while noting that results depend on the source water, compounds, system design, operation, and maintenance. A generic label such as “carbon filter” or “reverse osmosis” does not tell you whether a particular model has demonstrated reduction of the PFAS you need to address. EPA’s filter guidance and its summary of household-system research are useful starting points.

How to choose a system for your water
- Find out which PFAS are present. If you use public water, check your utility’s results or contact it. For a private well, consult your state environmental or health agency about testing. EPA advises using state-certified laboratories that use EPA-developed drinking-water methods. See EPA’s guidance for private wells.
- Match the filter claim to the compounds. Do not assume a broad “PFAS” label covers every PFAS. EPA’s consumer guidance says that, as of April 2024, the filter certifications it describes focus on PFOA and PFOS; check the actual product claim for the compounds it addresses.
- Verify the individual model in the certifier’s directory. EPA points consumers to NSF/ANSI 53 for carbon filters and NSF/ANSI 58 for RO systems. A standard number alone does not prove a PFAS reduction claim: confirm that the exact model is listed for PFAS reduction. Start with EPA’s home-filter guidance and EPA’s certification-identification page.
- Compare the full operating burden. Check installation requirements, rated capacity or life, replacement intervals, cartridge and membrane availability, and recurring costs. For RO, compare the model’s water efficiency and reject-water ratio rather than relying on a universal figure.
- Maintain the system on schedule. EPA warns that overdue filter replacement can compromise performance and increase PFAS exposure risk. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every cartridge and membrane.
What certification does—and does not—tell you
Certification provides a way to verify a specific product claim, but it should not be confused with proof that a filter brings water below a regulatory limit. EPA’s consumer guidance states that, as of April 2024, the PFAS filter certifications it describes focus on PFOA and PFOS and do not indicate that a product reduces PFAS to the newer federal drinking-water standard levels. Treat that as a date-qualified statement, not as confirmation of any later change to certification programs; check current EPA guidance and the certifier’s listing before buying.
Public water-system limits and filter certifications answer different questions. EPA’s rule set maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) each for PFOA and PFOS, 10 ppt each for PFHxS, PFNA, and GenX (HFPO-DA), and a Hazard Index of 1 for mixtures containing two or more of PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA, and PFBS. These are regulatory limits for public water systems, not filter test results. As described on EPA’s page checked October 7, 2026, proposals announced May 18, 2026 would retain the PFOA and PFOS MCLs while offering eligible systems a possible compliance extension, and would rescind rules for several other PFAS; those proposed changes are not finalized in that source. See EPA’s PFAS rule overview and its proposed compliance-extension rule.

RO water use and filter costs
RO generates reject water, but EPA’s general figures differ by page: its home-filter guidance says about one gallon is wasted per gallon treated, while EPA WaterSense describes typical point-of-use systems as producing five gallons or more of reject water per gallon of treated water. These are broad descriptions, not specifications for every unit. Use the individual system’s measured efficiency to compare models.
EPA’s home-filter guidance, accessed October 7, 2026, gives a purchase-price range of $20 to more than $1,000 depending on filter type, brand, and format; it excludes maintenance costs and is not a current market survey. Include replacement expenses when comparing lifetime cost. EPA’s consumer page covers costs and maintenance; its WaterSense guidance provides the other general reject-water figure.
