For a face-search API, Trace, FaceCheck.ID, and Lenso document developer access; PimEyes’ reviewed pages describe a consumer search and monitoring service, not an API. That distinction matters as much as cost: the four services do not form a like-for-like API comparison. All can produce leads to images or pages that may show a similar face, but a match is not proof of identity, and an empty search does not prove that a person has no photos online.
What face search finds—and what it cannot establish
Face search compares facial features across images, so it may find a different photo of a face even when the submitted image itself has not been copied. Conventional reverse-image search is primarily looking for copies or visually similar instances of the image file. The distinction is useful when looking for public appearances of a face, but the results are still similarity leads: they do not establish who a person is.

These services search material they can access and have indexed, not every image on the internet. Trace explicitly warns that an empty result means only that its service did not find a match in the web it can reach. Social networks, private accounts, unindexed pages, or excluded sources may not be searched. Treat “no result” as inconclusive, not as evidence that someone has no online presence.
There is no controlled, independent comparison of all four services in the material available for this article. Provider-published scores, accuracy statements, and index claims are not comparable test results. No service can be named a universal winner for accuracy or coverage on that basis.

At a glance: APIs, costs, and stated limits
| Service | What the reviewed documentation describes | Published cost or allowance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trace | Browser search and API. API returns a result URL, platform/handle fields, and a similarity score. | One credit reveals one search. Trace lists $4 for 5 credits and $50 for 100 credits; credits do not expire, and there is no subscription or monthly minimum. | Sales tax or VAT may apply. Trace scores are its own similarity labels, not identity probabilities. |
| FaceCheck.ID | API workflow uses image upload, polling, and JSON results; the service also has a consumer FAQ. | Three credits per API search at $0.10 per credit: $0.30 per search, according to its API page accessed 2026-10-04. | Its sample’s default testing mode scans only 100,000 faces, costs no credits, and FaceCheck says results are not meaningful. |
| Lenso | Face Search API is included in its Developer Plan; browser search also offers a People category and other image-search categories. | Current dollar prices were not stated in the pricing-page text reviewed. | Check the live pricing display and API guide for current prices, allowances, and implementation details. |
| PimEyes | Reviewed pages describe a consumer service for searching appearances, source information, alerts, and image-rights monitoring; they do not describe API access. | Homepage lists Open Plus: up to 75 searches daily and 10 alerts; PROtect: up to 125 searches and 20 alerts; Advanced: unlimited daily searches and 500 alerts. Dollar prices were not stated in the reviewed material. | PimEyes says it excludes social media and video platforms. Its homepage’s accuracy and index-update figures are provider claims, not independently validated results. |
Trace prices and allowances above are from its current homepage/API materials accessed 2026-10-04. PimEyes quotas and promotional claims are from its homepage accessed 2026-10-04. Prices, limits, terms, and coverage can change; check the provider’s current page before committing to a workflow.
Trace: a credit-based API with explicit upload and score details
Trace’s API documentation describes bearer-token authentication, multipart image upload, an asynchronous scan, and polling until completion. A completed result can include a URL, platform or handle information, and a similarity score. Trace says a typical search takes 25–45 seconds and can take up to 90 seconds.
Image requirements and score labels
- Accepted formats: JPEG, PNG, or WebP.
- Maximum file size: 8 MB; the shortest image side must be at least 200 pixels.
- Trace describes score values from 50 to 100, with its labels beginning at 70 (“possible”), 80 (“strong”), and 90 (“near-certain”). These names are Trace’s score bands, not probabilities that a person has been identified.
Trace states that one credit reveals one search. Its listed packs run from $4 for five credits to $50 for 100, with no subscription or monthly minimum; credits do not expire, and tax may apply. The total cost therefore depends on the search volume and the pack chosen, rather than a recurring monthly plan.
Data handling and permitted use
Trace’s policy, last updated 2026-09-27, says face cropping happens in the browser before upload. It also says its search may query public image engines and that roughly half of paid searches reach a commercial face-search service when Trace’s own result is thin. For those outside queries, Trace says it provides a cropped image through a signed URL that remains available for up to about ten minutes; it cannot control the other engines’ logs or caches.

- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Trace says uploaded images and result previews are retained for 30 days so a scan can be reopened, with immediate deletion available. It also says its own index may retain measurements, a small face crop, and the public page URL when a match is indexed, and offers removal and a permanent do-not-index list. These are provider statements, not an independent audit.
Trace’s API documentation says it is not an identity service and describes matches as similarity scores between images. Its stated terms prohibit background checks, hiring, lending, insurance, surveillance, law enforcement, searches involving minors, and identifying, tracking, or harassing people. Trace says users should search only images they have the right to use.
FaceCheck.ID: a three-credit API search, with a testing-mode trap
FaceCheck’s documented API sequence is to upload an image to /api/upload_pic, receive an id_search, poll /api/search, and retrieve JSON results. Its Swagger page identifies specification version 1.02 and lists upload, delete, info, and search operations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFaceCheck says each API search costs three credits and each credit costs $0.10, making the stated API search cost $0.30. Its sample defaults to TESTING_MODE=True. FaceCheck warns this mode scans only 100,000 faces, costs no credits, and produces results that “won’t be meaningful”; it is not a valid way to assess the live service’s coverage or accuracy.

FaceCheck’s FAQ says it returns a match-quality score but cannot guarantee identity. It warns that unrelated lookalikes, low image quality, and occlusion can lead to misleading results. The FAQ also says children’s photos may not be searched and that such searches violate its terms.
On data handling, FaceCheck’s FAQ says search history is deleted within 24 hours, submitted searches are not added to its database, and its index stores low-resolution thumbnails and links rather than original source photos. It describes a removal route. These are FaceCheck’s own policy statements, not independently audited findings.
Lenso: API access plus broader image-search categories
Lenso’s People category provides face search; other listed categories include Duplicates & Copyrights, Places, Similar, and Related images. Its pricing page describes Starter and Professional subscriptions, as well as a Developer Plan that includes Face Search API access. Professional is described as adding Research Mode, advanced filters, and a larger result allowance. The Developer Plan combines API calls with search and alert allowances.
The pricing-page text reviewed did not state current dollar prices, so a reliable cost comparison with the credit prices of Trace or FaceCheck is not possible here. Confirm live checkout prices and included allowances before choosing a plan.

Lenso’s API examples show bearer-token authentication and an endpoint that accepts a base64-encoded image. The examples include sorting, page selection, domain filters, and optional date bounds, with up to 20 results per page and request limits. Because these details come from repository examples, confirm the current API guide before building against them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.PimEyes: consumer search and monitoring, not a documented API comparison here
PimEyes describes its search as scanning the open web and explicitly excludes social media and video platforms. It offers searches for appearances and source information, alerts, and image-rights monitoring. That stated source exclusion may make it a poor fit if the specific goal is searching for appearances on social platforms.
Its homepage accessed 2026-10-04 lists these daily search and alert allowances:

The same homepage advertises “98%” search accuracy and “50M+” daily index updates. These are PimEyes’ own claims; the reviewed page did not provide an evaluation method or independent validation, so they do not prove that PimEyes outperforms another service. Its terms dated 2026-07-31 prohibit unlawful or invasive use, including stalking and spying. PimEyes also describes a takedown service, and its tutorials say users can request removal from search results through opt-out or manual exclusion. Check its current plan and privacy pages for up-to-date details.
How to choose for an actual workflow
- Decide whether you need an API. Trace, FaceCheck.ID, and Lenso document API access in the material reviewed. PimEyes’ reviewed pages describe consumer plans and results access, not a developer API.
- Check whether the source scope matches the question. If you are looking for social-media appearances, note PimEyes’ stated exclusion of social media and video platforms. No-result outcomes from any service are bounded by the pages it can access and index.
- Estimate your likely search volume. Trace and FaceCheck describe credit-based costs; Lenso describes subscriptions and developer allowances; PimEyes lists plan quotas. Compare expected total spend and recurring commitments, not just one headline figure.
- Check integration requirements before implementation. Trace documents multipart upload, asynchronous polling, and file requirements. FaceCheck documents upload-and-poll endpoints. Lenso’s examples use a base64 image and list filters and pagination. Verify current API documentation for each before coding.
- Review privacy and use terms before uploading. Check retention, external processing, deletion, removal or opt-out routes, and the provider’s permitted-use rules. Apply extra caution when the image belongs to someone else, and follow applicable local law.
How to assess a possible match responsibly
- Open the source page and inspect its surrounding context rather than relying on a cropped preview or score.
- Look for corroboration from independent, reliable context. A similarity score is not an identity finding, regardless of how strong a provider labels it.
- Do not make consequential decisions about a person based on a face-search result alone.
- Do not treat an empty result as proof that the person has no online photos.
FaceCheck’s FAQ captures the central limitation: “No matter how sophisticated the AI algorithm is, a computer can’t establish a guaranteed identity match based on low-quality internet photos of people in varying poses and lighting conditions.”
