RetroSpace gives a space-station janitor a sprawling, black-hole-stranded city-ship to explore, with stealth, hacking, mutations, traps and combat among the intended ways through. That makes the System Shock comparison apt: the developers cite the immersive-sim classic as an influence. But the comparison also sets a high bar for distinctive tools. An early review found many of the game’s ideas familiar, so the more useful question is whether its connected setting and combinations make that familiar toolkit compelling.
What is RetroSpace?
RetroSpace is a single-player first-person sci-fi action-adventure with immersive-sim and horror elements, developed by The Wild Gentlemen and published by Kwalee. Its story casts the player as a janitor aboard Aurora 5, a city-ship in the AURORA fleet. In the game’s premise, the ship is pulled into a black hole; the developer places the story in 2177 and describes the station as shifting between two time periods. The studio calls its tone “disco-punk space horror,” pairing 1970s styling and humor with horror. Those details establish a distinctive setting, though they do not by themselves make the tools distinctive.

What tools can you use in RetroSpace?
The developers present Aurora 5 as a large, interconnected station with shortcuts, secret routes and a central hub. Their official description says, “Every obstacle has multiple solutions.” That is a design promise, not proof that every improvised interaction works as hoped in play.

Stealth, systems and combat
The advertised approaches include sneaking past enemies, hacking or manipulating systems, creating diversions, setting traps, using environmental hazards, finding hidden routes and fighting directly. The idea is to choose a route or combination that suits the obstacle rather than treating every encounter as a mandatory firefight. How consistently those options produce meaningfully different outcomes is one of the questions an early review raises.
Mutamods and builds
Mutamods grant abilities for stealth, combat, exploration and mobility, and the official descriptions warn that they can come with side effects. In a Game Informer interview published November 13, 2025, creative director Bánk B. Varga described the mutations as abilities derived from animal genes that players can combine into builds. He said players could use gadgets, mutations, both, or neither. That flexibility is the intended design; the interview is not an independent assessment of how balanced or useful each build feels.

Cloning and recovery
Death is part of the setup: the station clones the protagonist, but resurrection brings a cloning consequence and requires the player to recover lost gear. Varga told Game Informer that cloning errors can be cleared by extracting genetic material from the previous body. This makes death a recurring system to manage, rather than simply a reload, although the interview describes intended mechanics rather than documenting how they play across every situation.
Is RetroSpace like System Shock?
Yes, in its lineage and broad design ambition—not because it is a sequel or because the comparison settles its quality. Varga named Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex and Prey as games the team admired, and the Game Informer interview also identifies BioShock among the inspirations. The developers say they want players to think through systems and solve problems creatively.

The critical concern is that familiar ingredients can make a game feel derivative unless their interactions or execution offer something memorable. The supplied title-review result says its writer found many ideas familiar from System Shock, BioShock and Arkane’s Prey, and hoped RetroSpace would offer an ability or combination as distinctive as Prey’s Mimic ability. That is an early critical impression, not a final verdict: the writer had not yet completed a full review.
To judge whether RetroSpace makes the genre’s toolkit its own, look beyond the number of gadgets or routes. The useful tests are whether obstacles support genuinely different solutions, whether tools combine convincingly with station systems, whether exploration rewards curiosity, and whether objectives remain understandable without excessive hand-holding. It also matters whether mutations feel distinctive beside genre precedents—and whether controls and performance let experimentation work rather than interrupting it.

How open is the station?
According to Varga’s 2025 interview, the main story is mostly fixed, with side missions and collectibles, while some stretches allow players to choose their order. He also described eight endings. These are developer-reported design details, not independently audited here; an open station and multiple endings should not be taken to mean the whole campaign is freely ordered or that every choice has a major consequence.
Is RetroSpace worth playing on PS5?
A Duuro Plays review published September 30, 2026, based on the PS5 version, praised the explorable setting, atmosphere and interactive tools, but reported that its version rarely held 60 fps and that the reviewer encountered bugs. The review disclosed that it used a PR-provided promo copy. Those performance observations apply to that reviewer’s PS5 experience; they do not establish how the PC or Xbox Series versions perform.

The review says the game launched October 1 on PS5, Xbox Series consoles and PC, with Switch 2 planned later. Platform availability can change, so consult the current Steam listing for PC information and the relevant console storefront for current availability. The PS5 report is a reason to weigh performance expectations, not enough evidence on its own to determine whether the game is worthwhile for every player.
What does the Steam PC listing require?
Steam’s minimum specifications describe a target of 1080p at Low/Balanced settings at approximately 30 FPS, and recommend an SSD. This is the store’s stated target, not a benchmark or guarantee of performance on every PC.
