There is no universal winner. Retinoids such as retinol are an option for mild fine lines and wrinkles, but evidence for over-the-counter cosmetic retinol is limited. Vitamin C is commonly recommended for signs of skin aging and dark spots, while peptides are another anti-aging ingredient category—but the guidance available here does not establish that peptide products work as well as retinol or vitamin C for fine lines. Your best fit depends on the concern, the specific formula, your skin’s tolerance and how the ingredient fits your routine.
How the three ingredients compare for fine lines
| Ingredient | What the evidence supports | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Retinol and other retinoids | The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) identifies retinoid products as an option for mild fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol is one type of retinoid and is commonly sold over the counter. | A 2021 systematic review found limited, weak evidence for over-the-counter cosmetic retinol products for facial aging. Formulas and tolerability vary, and cosmetic retinol is not the same as prescription retinoids. |
| Vitamin C | AAD says vitamin C serum or cream may help reduce signs of skin aging and dark spots. Its consumer guidance recommends morning application before sunscreen. | This is broad guidance, not proof that every vitamin C formula treats fine lines equally well or matches a specific retinoid or peptide product. Derivatives and concentrations are not interchangeable. |
| Peptides | AAD lists peptides among anti-aging ingredients and says they help create collagen and elastin for younger-looking skin. | That general description does not establish a class-wide effect on fine lines or comparative clinical efficacy for peptide serums. |
What the retinol evidence does—and does not—show
AAD says retinoid products may be suitable for mild fine lines and wrinkles. However, a 2021 systematic review by Natalia M. K. Spierings examined nine randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trials of over-the-counter vitamin A cosmetic products for facial skin aging. Four found no statistically significant difference between retinol treatment and vehicle. The review described the remaining positive evidence as weak and methodologically flawed, concluding that there was “very little, if any, trustworthy evidence” to support over-the-counter cosmetic retinol for improving aged skin. That does not establish that every retinol product is ineffective. It does mean that a product’s ingredient name alone cannot promise a visible result: formulations differ, and the reviewed evidence does not justify a confident claim that over-the-counter retinol reliably improves facial fine lines.

A 2007 randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study followed 36 elderly participants using 0.4% retinol lotion on arm skin for 24 weeks. It found a significant improvement in fine-wrinkling scores compared with vehicle. The participants, body area, product and treatment period were specific; this result does not show that every over-the-counter facial retinol product works. See the study record on PubMed.

Individual sensitivity to components is possible.
Choose by concern, tolerance and routine
- For mild fine lines: Retinoids are an option in AAD guidance, but consider the limited and contested evidence for over-the-counter cosmetic retinol. If choosing retinol, account for irritation risk and introduce it gradually.
- For dark spots as well as signs of skin aging: Vitamin C has a clear place in AAD consumer guidance. The guidance does not establish that all formulas or derivatives produce the same result.
- If considering peptides: Treat “peptides” as a broad category, not a guarantee of a particular outcome. The AAD description does not demonstrate that peptide serums as a class perform as well as retinol or vitamin C for fine lines.
- If your skin is sensitive or inflamed: Irritation and routine fit matter. People with notable redness, inflammation, dryness or skin allergies may need advice from a clinician before starting a retinoid.
- If pregnant: AAD advises against retinoid use during pregnancy. Ask a clinician about appropriate skincare choices if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.
How to fit them into a routine
Retinoids: start slowly and use at night
AAD advises starting with the least-intense retinoid formula available, applying it every other night at first and gradually increasing use if tolerated. Retinoids can irritate skin; AAD notes that irritation can trigger dark marks in skin of color, and advises slow introduction and moisturizer. AAD also advises using retinoids at night and protecting skin from the sun during the day. See AAD guidance on retinoid and retinol use.
Vitamin C: morning, before sunscreen
AAD’s routine guidance is to apply vitamin C serum or cream after washing in the morning and before sunscreen. This placement does not mean vitamin C replaces sun protection. Read AAD guidance on facial masks and skin-care routines.

Bottom line on retinol vs. peptides vs. vitamin C
Retinoids have the most direct place in AAD guidance for mild fine lines and wrinkles, but the evidence for over-the-counter cosmetic retinol is not strong enough to promise results. Vitamin C is a reasonable routine consideration when dark spots and signs of skin aging are also concerns. Peptides are recognized as an anti-aging ingredient category, but the guidance cited here does not establish class-wide results for fine lines. Choose based on your specific concern, tolerance and routine—not on a claim that one ingredient is best for everyone.
