Restreamer can retry a stream process after an interruption, but it cannot keep sending video to YouTube while your only broadband connection is down. In Restreamer, enable process reconnect, set an interval and a timeout appropriate to your deployment, then save. To remain live through a complete ISP outage, you need a working, independent internet path as well as a configured fallback source.
What Restreamer’s recovery settings can—and cannot—do
Restreamer’s process controls let a stream process try to reconnect after an interruption. They are useful when the process or connection recovers, but they are not a backup internet connection. If broadband is completely unavailable and no alternate route is configured, Restreamer cannot deliver video to YouTube until connectivity returns. The official Restreamer Processing and Control documentation describes the reconnect checkbox, interval and timeout; it does not promise uninterrupted delivery during an ISP outage.

Enable and save process reconnect
- Open the relevant stream process in Restreamer and go to its processing and control settings. The precise surrounding interface can vary by deployment.
- Enable the option that determines whether the stream should reconnect.
- Set the reconnect interval in seconds. This controls how long the process waits before trying again.
- Set the timeout for a hanging process. According to Restreamer’s documentation, after this timeout the process is terminated and marked faulty.
- Save the settings, then test them with the source and deployment you will use live. The documentation does not prescribe universal interval or timeout values, so validate choices rather than relying on an assumed standard.
During a test, observe both the Restreamer process and the stream’s status in YouTube. Confirm that the intended YouTube stream is configured before testing recovery.

Check the YouTube publishing setup
Restreamer’s YouTube guide describes publishing through Publication Service: select or configure YouTube, provide a valid YouTube streaming ID, and save. Check that the ID or stream key belongs to the intended YouTube broadcast and that the publishing configuration is saved before the event.
When an event ends, the Restreamer guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first if preserving the DVR archive matters. Interrupting Restreamer mid-event may prevent YouTube from saving that archive. See Restreamer’s YouTube setup guide.
Reduce drops on a weak or variable connection
A reconnect setting helps a process retry; choosing a stream configuration your upload can sustain may help prevent interruptions in the first place. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, choosing quality reliable for the connection, testing with representative audio and movement, and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast. These measures can help with a constrained or unstable upload, but they cannot restore a fully failed internet link. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- Run an upload speed test under conditions representative of the broadcast, and leave headroom rather than setting the encoder to the highest possible rate.
- Test the actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and motion you plan to use. A static test image may not reveal issues that appear with moving video.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while testing and live. If health is poor, reduce the encoder load to a level the connection can reliably sustain.
- Do not treat an encoder adjustment as outage protection: if the only network path is down, a lower bitrate cannot transmit the stream.
YouTube’s current support page includes recommended bitrate ranges by encoder configuration. Check the table there for the resolution, frame rate and codec you use; the page reviewed does not show a publication date, and its recommendations should not be mistaken for measurements of a particular Indian broadband connection.
What actually provides continuity during a broadband outage?
Continuity requires a genuinely independent path to the internet and a fallback source that can take over. A phone hotspot or cellular failover is a possible category of alternate connection, not a verified recommendation for a particular Indian provider, plan, router or locality. Confirm local coverage, device compatibility and failover behavior, then test the setup before relying on it.

Restream’s separate backup-stream documentation describes a two-source setup using two encoders and recommends two distinct network connections. Its help page currently describes the feature as an Enterprise offering. That guidance applies to Restream’s service, not to datarhei Restreamer; check current plan terms and destination behavior before depending on it. See Restream’s backup-stream guide.

Restream also documents a separate disconnect-protection feature with fallback video for eligible plans. It must be configured before going live and has a limited fallback window; it is not a Restreamer process setting. Check the current terms in Restream’s disconnect-protection guide if considering that separate service.

- The process keeps retrying but YouTube remains offline: Check whether the broadband link has returned and whether the server can reach the internet. Reconnect retries cannot bypass a complete outage without an alternate route.
- The process is marked faulty: Review the configured timeout and process state. Restreamer documents that a hanging process is terminated and marked faulty after the timeout; inspect the source and deployment before changing the timeout.
- The process runs but the YouTube broadcast is not receiving it: Verify the Publication Service configuration and that the saved YouTube streaming ID/key is for the intended broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- The stream becomes unhealthy when the picture gets busy: Test representative movement and audio, then lower the encoder settings to a bitrate and quality the upload can sustain.
- The stream drops when the primary broadband fails: Restore that connection or switch to a previously configured independent path. If a fallback was not configured and tested before the event, reconnect settings alone do not create one.
- The DVR archive is missing after the event: Follow Restreamer’s guidance to end the stream on YouTube first rather than stopping Restreamer mid-event.
