Choose your YouTube Live bitrate from your measured, sustained upload speed—not your broadband plan’s advertised download speed. A conservative rule of thumb from Restream is to keep video bitrate at or below half of your upload speed, but that is a heuristic, not a guarantee. For H.264, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. If your connection cannot sustain that reliably, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.
Start with your upload capacity
Run an upload-speed test on the device and connection you will use for the stream, under conditions close to the planned broadcast. Download speed does not tell you how much data your encoder can send reliably. Other devices and activity on the connection can also affect available upload capacity, so a single test is not a guarantee of performance throughout a long stream.

Restream’s July 9, 2026 guidance suggests keeping video bitrate no higher than half your upload speed. Treat this as a cautious starting point, not a YouTube requirement or a promise that a stream will remain stable. For example, if a representative test shows 8 Mbps upload, the heuristic points to a video bitrate of no more than 4 Mbps; YouTube’s H.264 recommendation for 720p is 6 Mbps, so you would need to test a lower setting or improve the available upload headroom rather than assume 720p will work.
There is no evidence-backed, single bitrate preset for all Indian broadband connections. Actual upload performance depends on your connection and conditions; select settings from your own measurements and a realistic stream test.

Choose resolution and frame rate, then bitrate
YouTube’s H.264 figures below are platform recommendations, not guaranteed minimum connection speeds. YouTube’s table distinguishes minimum and recommended figures where shown.

A lower resolution or frame rate may be the practical choice when upload capacity is limited. In YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, 720p30 and 720p60 both have a 6 Mbps recommended bitrate; the 1080p figures differ by frame rate. Pick the highest combination that stays stable in a representative test, rather than targeting a resolution your connection cannot sustain.

These values apply to H.264 only. YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with different bitrate recommendations. Use the table for your selected codec rather than transferring H.264 figures to another codec.

Set the encoder basics YouTube recommends
- Protocol: RTMPS is recommended by YouTube.
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: set 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Codec: confirm the encoder codec and use the matching YouTube bitrate guidance.
These settings do not remove the need for upload headroom. If the stream is unstable, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test again.

Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Set up the planned output. Choose your codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval before testing.
- Use representative content. YouTube advises including audio and movement similar to the real stream. A static picture without the planned audio or motion may not reveal the same issues.
- Test before the event. YouTube’s guidance is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and broadcast.
- Adjust in small, practical steps. If quality is poor or the stream is unstable, reduce bitrate, resolution, or FPS, then repeat the representative test.
YouTube transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. The ingest bitrate you send is therefore not necessarily the bitrate every viewer receives.
Check the outgoing bitrate in Restreamer
After connecting Restreamer to YouTube Live, the Restreamer documentation says the main window displays the live stream bitrate. Use that display to confirm what is being sent. It does not replace an upload-capacity test or YouTube’s stream-health checks.

Troubleshoot a weak or unstable stream
- The chosen bitrate exceeds the available upload headroom: lower the encoder bitrate and test again. Compare against sustained upload measured on the streaming connection, not the advertised download speed.
- Stream health is poor or quality is unstable: reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, then test with representative audio and movement.
- The bitrate appears different from what you expected: check the value shown in Restreamer’s main window and verify the selected encoder settings.
- A test looked fine, but the live broadcast does not: conditions may differ. Test close to the actual setup and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast.
- You want a higher resolution but lack upload capacity: do not force the higher setting. Choose a lower resolution or frame rate that remains stable in testing.
