For a self-hosted source that needs to publish directly to YouTube, Restreamer is the more clearly documented fit. Its Publication Service guide describes connecting a source to YouTube with a streaming ID. Owncast is built to receive an RTMP broadcast and serve its own stream; the official documentation reviewed here does not establish a native YouTube publishing destination. If you want to use Owncast and also reach YouTube, plan on a separate restreaming workflow and verify it end to end.
Neither product’s setup documentation proves comparative uptime. An always-on channel depends on the source, encoder, network, host and publishing path all continuing to work. Choose based on destination and the amount of infrastructure you want to operate—not an assumed reliability ranking.

At a glance: which one fits YouTube?
| Option | What the documented workflow does | Fit for an always-on YouTube channel |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or create a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and start the stream. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud. | #1 if you want a 24/7 YouTube stream without keeping your own computer online: it runs in the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. |
| Restreamer | Select its Publication Service, enter a valid YouTube streaming ID, save, and start publishing a configured source. | The more directly documented self-hosted route for sending a source to YouTube. |
| Owncast | Receive an encoder’s RTMP broadcast at the server’s /live/ endpoint and serve the stream to viewers. |
Designed to host its own stream. The official material reviewed does not show native YouTube publishing; a separate relay would need to be configured and tested if YouTube is also a destination. |
For all three, distinguish a continuous workflow from a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Restreamer and Owncast are self-hosted, so you operate the source and infrastructure; StreamNeo is for looping uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, not for going live from a camera.

Restreamer: publish a source to YouTube
Restreamer’s current YouTube guide describes choosing the Publication Service, supplying a valid YouTube streaming ID, saving the configuration and starting the stream. Its quick start covers running the Docker container and configuring sources, a player and publication services. Public-facing functionality may require port forwarding. Consult the current guide for the exact interface labels and configuration details: Restreamer’s YouTube publication guide and quick start.

Owncast: receive and serve an RTMP broadcast
Owncast’s documented flow is to configure a broadcasting encoder to send RTMP to the server’s /live/ endpoint, then serve that stream to viewers. Its compatibility guide says, “In general Owncast is compatible with any software that uses RTMP to broadcast to a remote server.” That compatibility statement does not itself mean Owncast forwards the stream to YouTube. If you need both Owncast and YouTube, add a separate publishing or relay path and verify that configuration; the reviewed official guides do not establish a built-in YouTube destination. See Owncast’s broadcasting guide.
YouTube prerequisites apply to either YouTube publishing path
YouTube requires live streaming to be enabled for the channel. In an encoder workflow, YouTube provides a Live server URL and stream key. Use the current values shown in YouTube Studio and treat the key as a credential: do not post it or include it in a public screenshot. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.

What “always-on” means in practice
For either self-hosted option, the whole chain must stay available: a producing source, the encoder or publishing service, a working network connection, and a host that remains running. Owncast’s installation guide calls for making the web and RTMP ingest ports reachable for external use and configuring Owncast as a background process or system service. Restreamer’s quick start uses Docker and notes that public-facing functionality may need port forwarding. These are deployment requirements, not published uptime figures. See Owncast’s installation guide.
When running a live event through Restreamer, its YouTube guide advises ending the stream on YouTube first. Interrupting Restreamer mid-stream may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream in the DVR archive. This is especially relevant when planning a manual shutdown; check the current interface before operating it.

Network capacity and audience delivery
Owncast’s official guide recommends upload capacity around 1.5 times the stream bitrate as headroom. It illustrates the calculation with 7.5 Mbps of upload for a 5,000 kbps stream. These are an attributed rule of thumb and example in Owncast’s undated documentation accessed in 2026—not universal minimums or a guarantee. The guide also notes that the server must have enough outbound throughput for concurrent viewers unless video delivery is offloaded to object storage. A wired network connection is recommended for stability. See Owncast’s “What You Need to Run Owncast” guide.
For an always-on channel, estimate both the bitrate going into the host and the total viewer delivery load. Audience growth can make outbound bandwidth a larger constraint than the encoder’s incoming feed. A VPS or other cloud host may be appropriate, but its capacity should be chosen for the actual stream configuration and audience rather than a generic viewer-count promise.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Owncast video quality: transcoding or passthrough
Owncast’s video guidance notes that additional transcoded output qualities consume server resources. It recommends starting with one output, testing the load, and adding variants only if the machine can handle them. Transcoding can offer viewers alternate playback qualities, but increases compute demand.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVideo passthrough can reduce CPU use by sending the source unchanged. The trade-off is that some viewers’ devices may not support the source format, and passthrough can increase latency. Choose based on the source, available compute and viewer playback needs, then test on the devices your audience uses. See Owncast’s video guide.

Decision guide
- Choose StreamNeo if your goal is to keep uploaded recordings or a playlist looping on YouTube without leaving a home computer running. It is the first option to try for this use case because it runs in the cloud, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
- Choose Restreamer if you want to self-host a source and the documented direct YouTube Publication Service workflow fits your setup. Be prepared to operate the host, network exposure and source yourself.
- Choose Owncast if you want to receive an RTMP broadcast and serve an Owncast-hosted stream to viewers. If YouTube must also receive it, treat that as a separate integration to configure and validate rather than assuming it is built in.
There is no documented head-to-head uptime result here that supports calling either self-hosted product more reliable. The practical distinction is destination and operating burden: Restreamer documents a direct YouTube publish flow; Owncast documents an ingest-and-serve flow.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos, not a camera encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, for one price per slot; if YouTube drops the stream, it attempts automatic recovery. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
